wtf why do the Hurricanes want to play here
If it happens it better be against the Rangers so they basically concede homefield advantage

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football team. The Hockey team is the Carolina Hurricanes.

Actually, he leads with that point, then goes on to completely disregard it by saying that the Yankees will have trouble because their rotation is the second-worst among the AL contenders. If it’s a crapshoot, why should that matter?

It's strange, isn't it?
I used to rely pretty heavily on ESPN and Yahoo! Sports for coverage. And now all I seem to find there is obvious statements like these, or sportswriters trying their hand at pop psychology. On the other hand, sites like Baseball Reference have so much quality content that it’s unbelievable.
I’m not even a stats first guy. But I enjoy analysis, and most of these “writers” seem to be severely lacking.

Look
It’s ok if you ask every once in a while for help with your blog, but that’s spamming in almost every other users case. We can’t keep making exceptions because you are a member of the community. You are still breaking one of the rules. Just because you do it in the comments and not in a fanpost or fanshot doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.
I think that’s what Jscape was saying.

I almost feel like it would bug me less in a fanpost or fanshot- this is a thread about Yankee news. BBS’ mailbag has absolutely nothing to do with this thread.

I hate Will Leich
Let me punch some holes in his argument about why the Yankees won’t make the playoffs.
The Yankees don’t have much of a rotation after CC Sabathia.
Sabathia (1.19 WHIP), Hughes (1.28), Pettitte (1.20), Vazquez (1.35), Burnett (1.50)
Pavano (1.15), Liriano (1.25), Slowey (1.27), Baker (1.34), Blackburn (1.54)
Lee (1.13), Wilson (1.22), Lewis (1.23), Hunter (1.26), Feldman (1.59)
Garza (1.18), Price (1.24), Neiman (1.24), Shields (1.40), Davis (1.40)
The Yanks’ August was mediocre (16-13)
If you paid attention to strength of schedule, you’d know that’s pretty good.
The “nightmare scenario” is losing Game 1 of the ALDS then needing Burnett or Hughes to bail them out.
For which team is losing the first game of a 5 game series not the nightmare scenario? Which team saying, “the plan is to drop Game 1 then win 2 and 3”?
The offense has feasted on mediocre pitchers and they won’t have that luxury in the postseason.
Oh, and Rays offense and the 41 no-hitters they’ve had in the last couple seasons are more intimidating? Maybe the Rangers and the Rays have almost precisely league average offenses (102 and 100 OPS+, respectively). The Twins are second best at 109. The Yankees are 118, and the playoff lineup figures to be better than what they’ve run out for nearly any game of the regular season. And playing the platoon split figures to strengthen the lineup even more- no AL team has a deeper bench.

the yankees will make the playoffs

Sorry Jscape
With regard to the Yanks rotation, Leich is spot on. WHIP out all the season stats you want. the fact is after CC we got nuthin but a big bag of ?’s in the playoffs. Assuming we get lucky and more than half of them turn out our way (and how often does that happen?) that still leaves a whole lot of hole to fill by the likes of AJ, Andy, Javy and…. (you get the picture)
Sure Leich is being melodramatic in his headline prediction. But the essence of his point is absolutely valid. With the affect of Andy’s injury still an unanswered question, we got ONE HORSE in the barn we can count on.
the Jeter thing is obvious
how long can we continue to have a .700 OPS hitter in the 2 spot? i know, best record in baseball and all, but instead of a 2.5 gm lead, maybe it would be 5.
and what about the playoffs? will Girardi really bat a .264/.331/.372 hitter second? forget his name is Derek Jeter – should he be hitting second or not?
I like Swisher batting 2nd

Where do you put him?
I would like to see something like this
1. Gardner
2. Swisher
3. Teixeira
4. Rodriguez
5. Cano
6. Jeter?
7. Posada?
8. Berkman/Thames?
9. Granderson?
It just doesn’t seem right. That’s the main problem and it can’t really be fixed, we’ll see how bold Girardi is by how he handles this.

sorry, but he’s the worst everyday hitter on the team this season.
This (sadly)
But it ain’t gonna happen unless DJ takes the initiative to make it happen, kind of like Ripken deciding when enough was enough at SS.

I agree with moving Jeter down
A-Rod, should and will stay in the cleanup spot. He’s the first on the team to 100 RBI in limited ABs. He’s been incredibly productive even in a “down year”. He still generates fear into other teams and pitchers simply because of his name. And most importantly, he’s heating up, with a 3 homer game before he went on the DL, and he’s 3-7 since his return with a HR.
I want him hitting cleanup. I do agree that Jeter has to be moved down unless he shows signs of a turnaround (which he showed today with a double, and a couple other hard hit balls). If he gets hot, leave Jeter in the 2 hole. If he continues to slump, he needs to be dropped to the bottom third.
I hate all Boston sports teams
