Count down to the playoffs-Time to think about roster and rotation
As I sat in the stadium today, watching the Yanks handle the BlueJays, I realised I was watching a team that was prepping for the playoffs.
The scoreboard showed the Red Sox falling. They are all but dead, and as soon as they are the Yanks and the Rays are in. The Red Sox majic number in the East is 18. That is essentially the Yank number to clinch the playoffs. The Yanks have 26 games left. No way for Boston to catch us.
So, watch as the Yanks try to figure out the playoff rotation and the playoff roster.
CC and Hughes. We need Andy. We'll use AJ. What do we do with Vazquez. He didn't impress me today, and I went there thinking, "We have to use him in the playoffs."
I like Nunez, the bench is loaded. No big questions in the pen at the moment. Joba is shakey and I might take Alba instead.

Joba has been solid
No need to take him out. He’s been excellent lately and the Yanks will need him to be a big part of the bullpen in October.
As for the rotation, I probably go CC, A.J., Andy in the first round, in that order. If the Yanks win the division they will be able to choose the shorter or longer divisional series, and they will probably choose the longer one. Andy would pitch the big Game 3, which I believe is one of the most important in a Division Series. He would also pitch that game on the road. That would allow Burnett to stay at home in his comfort zone at Yankee Stadium in Game 2, and Game 5 if necessary. CC can pitch anywhere. He’s the ace, so he goes Game one.
If the Yanks go on or miss out on the division, I would add Hughes to the rotation mix and stick Vazquez in the pen. The relievers could be Vazquez, Nova, Robertson, Marte (if he comes back), Logan, Joba, Wood, Rivera. That adds two lefties to the bullpen and two long men. Plus Robertson, Joba, Wood, and Mariano is as solid a back end as it gets.

No "long series" this year
The yanks need 4 playoff starters if they’re going anywhere.

What do you mean?
I thought that the team with the ALs best record could choose if they wanted a day off between games 1 and two or not. And if they did, then they would only have to use three starters. Did they change that rule?
Obviously they’ll need four starters (Hughes) for the ALCS and WS.

No, they've only eliminated the off day before Game 5 in the LCS
Which would mean we couldn’t use a three man rotation if we make the ALCS. I don’t think they’ve changed the schedule of the ALDS at all. Playoffs start on the 6th, the ALCS starts on the 16th. I’m pretty sure we can, if we do indeed the win the division, take the longer series and use a three man rotation.
In fact, I don't even see how that allows us not to use a three man rotation in the ALCS
If they’d left the rest day, our #2 (har, har) would be pitching on normal rest. Now he’ll be pitching on three days rest for Game 5.
Javy can easily be a long reliever or even a short reliever
he has done very well from the pen and say andy struggles, or AJ is being AJ, javy would be a good option to bring in for length and maybe keep us in the game. plus starter javy seems to throw high 80’s while pen javy seems completely different throwing 90-92
we've got a comedian in the house!

You want a full playoff roster projection?
I can do that if you’d like.

I Count 23 solid spots on the playoff roster:
1. Posada
2. Teixeira
3. Berkman
4. Cano
5. Jeter
6. Rodriguez
7. Gardner
8. Granderson
9. Swisher
10. Kearns
11. Thames
12. Cervelli
13.Nunez/Pena
14. Sabathia
15. Hughes
16. Pettitte
17. Burnett
18. Rivera
19. Chamberlain
20. Wood
21. Robertson
22. Logan
23. Vasquez
I can see Joe going with both Pena and Nunez, especially if they’d have to PR for Berkman or Posada in the late innings. If push comes to shove, I think they take Pena just because of the experience and glovework. However, I think both are in unless they take a wing and prayer with Marcus at third. So I say that’s 24 spots filled, with the last spot going to a pitcher IMO.
I would have loved two LOOGYs in the pen, to potentially neutralize Hamilton/Morneau/Mauer TWICE in a game. However, it looks like Marte is done for the year and possibly 2011. I have no hope out for Ace to return and even then I doubt he’ll be able to come back to form in time for the playoffs. Which leaves Moseley/Nova/Gaudin/Mitre. I have no clue how they treat Vasquez coming out of the bullpen but I doubt they’d let him pitch in a blowout. I would love to see Nova with the playoff spot but he’s already at 164 combined innings. I don’t know if they’d “waste” him in a cleanup role out of the bullpen. My gut tells me that Mitre gets the last spot but anything can happen.
I agree with your 23 solids- the lineup lets Joe mix and match for RH and LF starters. The bullpen looks deep.
Remember that against a RHP, either Kearns will be available to pinch run, and against a LHP, Granderson will be available.
24 Golson can be the super-speedy pinch runner.
25 Whichever pitcher pitches best down the stretch.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I actually like the idea of having Golson up to be a pinch runner
He can play the role of Freddy Guzman last year. Wasn’t a major contributer on the regular season team, but can be a big factor late in a close game. I would definitely include Greg Golson.

The big questions
Are concerns. Can Andy P be ready? Where do we go if he’s not? Is Arod able to play defense? If not, who?
Should a 5 game roster be different than a 7?
Can Nova or Alby be good enough to earn a playoff slot?
Is there any way for Ace?
Do we need Chad M as a spare catcher?

I'll give you a rotation
CC, Andy, Hughes, Burnett… Javier, for whatever reason, has worked ridiculously well out of the pen. As long as the Yankees carry some relievers that can go a few innings (quality innings) they should be fairly solid with the rotation. No idea what to do about Game 7 if it gets there though.

Agree that Javy could be really valuable in the playoffs as a long reliever out of the pen, especially if Bad A.J. or Hughes get shelled in the early innings—Javy could keep us in the game while we try to score our way back, as he’s done a couple of times recently.

Here's your rotation: 1) Sabathia, 2) CC, 3) Carlston Charles, 4) The fat guy.
Seriously, Pettitte is #2 at this point no matter how he looks the rest of the way, and I wouldn’t make him #3 just to separate lefthanders. Some combination of Hughes and Burnett are #s 3 and 4, depending on how lthey look over the next 3 weeks.
The bench should be a combination of experience (Berkman types) and speed (Pena).

+1
For the first two rounds we can use the DH, remember? And although I don’t EVER want to see him in the outfield (where he is a threat to himself and others) Dude is hitting .302 with an OPS of .905! He’s had big hits off of lefties and righties. Berkman’s average with the Yankees is .233, with an OPS of .637 – and he wasn’t that much better with the Astros. Berkman is a bigger name, and yes they traded for him. But Thames has been more of a contributor.
what worries me is that can phil do it with the lights on
