Is Cano MVP by default?

Robinson Cano is having an excellent year as we all know. He is having one of his best defensive years ever. Probably his best. I watch him all the time and hes just amazing. Spectacular glove, strong arm, what more can you ask for? Also turns two pretty well. Passed the eye test. Oh and I'm a SABR head who isn't in love with UZR because Mark Teixeira is a good fielder. How is he negative UZR? I do think first base is one of the positions messed up by UZR.

Cano is also batting .323 and has career highs in home runs (28), and RBI's (102). Numbers that will most likely increase over the last two weeks of the season.

OBP - .384

SLG - .554

wOBA - .395

Cano's a whole two wins better than last season. His WAR of 2009 4.6 and in 2010 6.6. So thats a plus.

Injury? *knocks on Kerry Wood

Well hes been healthy the entire season. No significant amount of playing time missed at all. Just a day or two off the whole season. While Josh Hamilton the leading MVP candidate most likely will be missing his 15th game tonight. I like to reward the players who didn't get hurt a bit more. I don't know why though. Its not like Hamilton meant to break some ribs against the outfield wall. So Hamilton might be forgotten by the voters.

Joe Mauer's name has been coming up a lot lately with his second half surge. Sadly he might miss some time. The Twins are being safe with an MRI on Mauer. Still his production was good I think Cano's been swinging a good bat all year.

Miguel Cabrera being the MVP wouldn't anger me, but since his team is no where near the playoffs I see no reason for the voters to give it to him unless theres a big difference in play. Which there isn't. Not being a homer by any means, but Don't ya know Robbie Cano?

*** Beltre - Agh! rub his head, he'll go away.

1. Miguel Cabrera
2. Josh Hamilton (only cuz of injuries that have cost him games)
3. Cano

I really want Cano to win one. :(

Me too.

But unfortunately, it won’t be this year.

by ACPhoenix on Sep 21, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

His numbers are better than Dustin Pedroia’s were 2 years ago when he won the award.

I think there’s a shot thanks to the Josh Hamilton injury. I don’t think the award will go to a guy who missed the final month of the season.

But I’d call Miguel Cabrera the favorite and deservedly so. He’s been the best player in baseball this year, and while his team was not competitive, they weren’t a last place team either.

I wouldn't necessarily say that

.326 /.418 /.614 35 hr 45 doubles.
.322 /.383 /.544 28 hr 39 doubles

The bottom guy is a second baseman. Cabrera has had a great year, no doubt. Better than Cano’s but IMO that production from a 2b is more valuable.

I don’t think it’s Cano, but unless records (and I mean important records) are broken I refuse to give it to a non playoff team’s player.

I never said give him the MVP because he overcame a drug problem

I think he is the MVP because of what he has done on the field. His team is going to the playoffs. I think it is a great thing that he came back from being at the lowest of lows to possibly hitting the highest of the highs.

Def. Should be the leading Candidate.

Its just hes hurt…

gotten hurt.

I think Hamilton will get it but...

If Cano has a strong finish and helps the Yanks win the division, he might sneak in there and grab it. I wouldnt have a problem with any of the guys mentioned getting it though.

Miguel Cabrera. Dude has just torn the cover off the ball the entire season.

Yah

I would have said Robbie or Hamilton, but Hamilton’s hurt and Robbie’s had a mediocre September. B-R says Longoria is leading the league in WAR, but I don’t see it.

Jose Bautista

no contest

If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

2010 WAR via Fangraphs

Josh Hamilton: 8.0
Adrian Beltre: 7.1
Robinson Cano: 6.6
Carl Crawford: 6.6
Jose Bautista: 6.5
Evan Longoria: 6.3
Miguel Cabrera 5.9
Shin Soo Choo: 5.4
Joe Mauer: 5.2
Brett Gardner: 5.0

The true most valuable player is Hamilton, but seeing as though he plays a corner OF and Beltre a corner IF I’d give it to Cano.

…that GGBG is the second most valuable player on the Yankees this year.

too bad that manager

already thinks its Sergio Mitre

FG is better than B-R WAR

Cano’s position makes him valuable too.

I thought it was "Most Valuable"

So thanks to Miggy his team made it to 3rd place? Im sorry but I just think there needs to be another award for best player because you cant give an award for most valuable to a guy who didnt take his team to the playoffs. The only exception is if the guy had a Bonds like season. Even McGwire didnt win the MVP in his 98 season, the guy who made the playoffs did.

by YankeesJets on Sep 23, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

No one player can carry.

Put 2010 Cano on the Royals and they’re still in last. It’s not his fault their pitching sucks. WAR already tells us how many wins a player is worth. No one gets 162.

World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.

That's two examples of players who consistently get the award

This is why baseball needs an offensive player of the year award

So we can clealry have 1 most valuable to a team player and 1 flat out best offensive player

I think that might be the Hank Aaron award?

Does anybody make a big deal about that award?

They need to hype that award if they want it to mean something. They even have a damn all star selection show nowadays. Im sure something can bring some glory to that award.

by YankeesJets on Sep 24, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure the recipients, writers, and those within the MLB community do.

I just looked and discovered that Jeter won the Hank Aaron Award in 2006 and 2009! Had no idea.

It’s like that postseason MVP award ARod won last year – sure the players, writers, and MLB community are into it, but the broader public has little idea, outside of the true fanatics (sup).

The Yankees have lost 10 games … what’s your point?

"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next." -George Michael Steinbrenner III

by Chris McKeown on Sep 23, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I used to feel that way, too

About a player winning the award on a non-competitive team. But I’ve thought about it differently the past few years. I think the best player in the league is inherently the most valuable. Let’s say I buy a Ferrari, but I only drive it around the city never going faster than 60 mph or so. Let’s say there’s another guy in Germany who owns the exact same Ferrari and drives it on the Audobahn. He’s getting better use out of his Ferrari but ultimately it has the same value.

That being said “best player” is subjective. A player can be the best player in the league in a given season without necessarily having the best stats. You could say that because of the way he’s played defense at a more demanding position, Cano is having a better year than Miguel Cabrera or Jose Bautista.

I wouldn’t personally say that, though. Miguel Cabrera is 1st in OBP, 1st in RBI, 2nd in runs, 2nd in BA, 3rd in SLG, 3rd in HR,. There’s nobody else that’s right the top of the league in every major offensive category like that.
