Even though the deal could happen Wednesday or later, the Yankees believe there is a loophole that because they were awarded the claim before the first of the month, they could use Lilly on their postseason roster.
The Yankees were awarded a waiver claim on Ted Lily, but the Dodgers pulled him back and seem unwilling to trade.
If the Dodgers would trade, maybe something could get done.
The Yankee front office is indicating there's some kind of loophole that would let them put Lily on the postseason roster- if they're right, Lily would be a quality player.
But even if all those big IFs come true, Lily would have to pass through irrevocable waivers first, clear the entire National League and then every American League team with a worse record than the Yankees... which is to say, every team.
If you're San Diego or Cincy or Atlanta or Texas or Tampa Bay- you've defied the odds to come this far. Are you really going to let the Yankees make a major upgrade to their one area of weakness for a couple million bucks?
The dream is dead Yankee fans. It's time to move on.

Texas would take Armando Benitez at this point
They are claiming everyone. Even Jeff Franecour!

Interesting
doesn’t look like the Yanks are getting him. This at least adds a tiny little bit of hope.
I hate all Boston sports teams
Indeed
It certainly does

If I understand how this works, and evidently I don't, hasn't everyone already on passed on Lilly once if the Yankees got to claim him?
And why did the Doggers waive him if they weren’t willing to get rid of him? And has anyone explained to them that they have to leapfrog over 4 other teams to get to the wildcard? Four teams that all happen to better than they are? That dumping ManRam only improved them by a finite amount?
Would Brooklyn take AJ Burnett for him?

Do you really think Joe Torre wants to see the Yankees win more titles without him?
Dont think he still isnt bitter towards the Yankees front office guys like Randy Levine.
I don't claim to have it down perfectly, but here's what I believe to be true:
There are revocable waivers and irrevocable waivers. They’re two similar but separate processes
Pretty much every player gets placed on revocable waivers in August- it gives the GM a chance to gauge interest for a future deal. This is how Manny got the White Sox this year. In this case, everyone passed on Lily except the Yankees- the Dodgers can only trade Lily to the Yanks, but they can also choose to keep him or dump him. Jose Canseco wound up on the Yankees because the Yanks put in a waiver claim to stop him from going to other contenders, then the team he was on said, “You want him, he’s your headache.”
Irrevocable waivers are just that- the player either makes it through waivers (get taken off the 40 man roster and assigned to the minor leagues or released), or another team gets him. When the Red Sox tried giving away Manny to clear space for Arod, they placed Manny on irrevocable waivers.
