I would hesitate to sign either. Not sure Crawford would be a good fit in NY, and I’m not certain Lee is as good as some think he is.

I think we should go after Lee because Gardner has played great this year and he is cheaper. Oh ya btw Lee is one of the best pitchers in baseball.
The analysis is fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't answer the question of how much it would cost to sign Lee in terms of years.
If Lee has 3 good years left, and he wants a contract for 6, then it makes much less sense to sign him.
Further, Crawford and Lee are not the only two players available, so asking which of the two is preferable to sign is a false choice. Two second line players might add more value than either one of these two for the same total money, or even less.
Lastly, one hardly needs to go to the WAR statistic to see that Lee (a starting pitcher) fills more of a need than Crawford (who is just Brett Gardner with more power).
