Johnny Damon has been waived and claimed.
The AP is reporting that Johnny Damon, former Kansas City Royals outfielder and self- proclaimed "idiot" was waived by the Detroit Tigers. The "Detroit Tigers" are apparently a professional baseball team allegedly playing in a division called the AL "Central." The AP says that the team claiming him is "unidentified." Boston market sports talk radio is split between hoping its the Red Sox and hoping that it isn't.
Given the Berkman and ARod injuries, would the Yankees be interested?

The Yanks should be interested
I wish they claimed him, but they didn’t. So I think he has to clear waivers again if the Yanks want to have a shot at him.

Damon looks like he would rather not go back to Boston, I dont blame him,lol
Ed Price is now reporting that Johnny Damon told him that he can block any potential move to Boston and is not inclined to rejoin the Red Sox.
It’s too bad for Boston that they might not get an extra outfielder for the stretch run, but Damon is a veteran that negotiated this right into his contract. There’s also a chance that the Red Sox just did this to block Damon from joining the division rival Rays, so perhaps one objective has already been fulfilled. Aug. 23 – 4:02 pm et
Sox claimed him but I doubt he goes there
I think they claimed him only to block him from going to the Rays
I wonder why the Yankees weren't interested...
Seems like he would be a good addition at a very reasonable price.
they probably were
but pretty sure waiver claims go by record. And I’d think its a good thing the Pissants suck more then the Yanks.

Sox fans will turn into the hypocrites they are if he accepts
They booed Damon out of the building unlike the great Yankees fans, now they will give him a standing O. Johnny, dont accept it, why go from one third place team to another anyway?
The Yanx
probably claimed him but were blocked by teh Redsox claiming him to block the deal. He wants to play in NY.
I would be shocked if the Yankees claimed Damon. They have had the best record in baseball, in the toughest division, for the entire year. Their only issue is the health of Pettite.
I think they might have claimed him to keep him away from the Rays
I dont think they really need Damon at this point. If he came back he would be a DH at best, not like we dont have enough of them already. I hope he stays a Tiger though.
Red Sox claimed Damon
Confirmed

We were talking about this last night
do you think he will wave his no trade clause?
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Not sure
Ive heard different things. He said his gut says he wants to stay in Detroit, but he is going to talk to the front office. If they tell him they are going with a kid movement, he will come to Boston.
Its up in the air right now.

I thought he would waive it because
the Sox are closer to the post season then the Tigers even with all the injuries, imo anyway.
Since the face been revealed the game got real
Yeah
That might play into reasoning.
Red Sox have 21% chance, Tigers 0.36%

That's the only reason he would
He’s basically professed his love for the Yankees and his desire to return to the Bronx.

Well I can't speak for him but I would rather be in Boston or New York then Detroit
But I like being on the coast.
I am not sure but I am pretty sure I am in a dance off
We'll see I guess

No surprise, Sox Nation are the biggest hypocrites in sports
Had the Sox claimed Manny(suppose to be on waivers any day now), they wouldve been back in love with the quitter once again. I wish Manny wouldve been the one claimed by the Sox, I wouldve loved to see people like Gammons and the other Sox writers claim they love Manny again.
In all fairness...
I would have booed someone for ditching to New York if I was a Bahston fan. But yeah.. he shouldn’t be going back.

I dont think it was entirely Damon's fault though
Had the Sox given him the same offer the Yanks did, he wouldve remained in Boston. I dont begrudge someone for getting more money. Look at Bay, do Sox fans hate him? No, and he didnt help bring them a title like Damon did.
That's true
I forgot that the Red Sox didn’t cough up anything to bring him back

I dont blame Manny for the way he was at the end
The Red Sox never take care of their own. They did it with Boggs, they did it with Clemens, they did it with Garciaparra, they did it with Damon, they did it with Pedro. Im sure im forgetting some others. Only that tool box Schilling got over in recent years. Im not saying to pay someone because of nostalgia, but Manny took them to two titles, he deserved to get paid.
Update: Please read the NY Times article on this subject today for a smile.
The Times says Damon going back to Boston would simply confirm the truth of Jerry Seinfeld’s bit (which is quoted at length) about how rooting for pro sports teams is essentially cheering on laundry.

This has to be the ultimate diss to Theo and RSN
He would rather be in Detroit than in a possible pennant race in Boston.
According to him
Detroit is still in it

With all Damon has said, I think deep down he wouldn't have gone even if he was on the O's
A supporter of the MFY.
well I thought he would go to have a better stage to showcase his talents
some big clutch hits down the stretch would increase the dollar amount on his next contract? This is what I thought Damon’s thought process would be. He says he wants to play till he is 40. Damon def likes his toys so he could use every dollar he can get
"Sorry bro, he Jason Bourned me"- Drama
I don't think a good portion of RSN wanted him back.

With Damon
it’s always about the money. Every move he has made has been for the money. He is not with the Yankees because he wanted a two year contract and thought he could get it somewhere else. I bet if the Sox offered him $$ through 2011 he would waive the no-trade. If they don’t, he will keep saying how much he loves Detroit….
Mickey C
If that were true...
He would have gone back to Boston. At this point he is playing for his next contract. He’ll get more exposure and likely have better number playing for the Red Sox. I think this decision was made DESPITE the fact that it would lead to more money down the road.
I don't think he needs exposure
Everyone knows what Johnny Damon can do. He’s shown enough in Detroit that we know he hasn’t lost it.
It may be that the Sox never actually intended to take him; they just wanted to be sure he didn’t go to the Yankees or Tampa Bay.

I don't really get Damon's styatement that the Tigers are still in it, but if his loyalty to them is genuine, it's admirable.
He definitely would have been paid to waive his no-trade clause. I understand that the payoff for this is typically $500k to $1.5m, depending on the player.

He’s won two championships and has earned a boatload of money. The performance expectations will be very high for him in Boston. He’ll also get resentment from bitter fans and writers that he had left to sign with the Yankees. Magglio Ordonez is out for the season and he’ll have regular playing time in Detroit. I’m not surprised Damon turned down the trade.
by Scooby Snacks on Aug 25, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions
In turning down the Red Sox, Damon stressed his loyalty to the Tigers.
The New England media believes that he still has a lot of negative feelings towards the Boston front office, however. Supposedly the players left over from the 2004 team asked him to return, but he felt that he couldn’t.
by designatedquitter on Aug 26, 2010 11:50 AM EDT reply actions
I don't blame him
He helped them win a championship and basically got left out to dry. They really made no huge effort in retaining him.
