Jesus Montero For Cliff Lee About To Happen?

[Note by Ed Valentine, 07/09/10 11:32 AM EDT: Ken Davidoff tweets that it looks like this deal is going to get done. ]

Joel Sherman of the New York Post says a Cliff Lee for Jesus Montero trade is nearly done. I am a little surprised if it is true that the Yankees are willing to move Montero. Are you? Vote in the poll and give us your thoughts on whether you would do this deal.

I agree with you

If Pettitte retires or Vazquez leaves.. let’s bring in Lee for JUST MONEY! It’s idiotic that they give up prospects for a guy they can wait for. They must really be scared to face him in the postseason

the thing is i think its MORE than just Montero

i doubt Mariners would do a straight one for one, they are look for ###s of prospects….

i was very disapointed when i read the article, Montero has been THE yankee prospect for so long, would just kill us to give up him and Jackson in the span of a year for essentially a spare piece… i assume we would move Hughes to the pen FURTHER setting him back…

I agree if hes available in the offense get him then, save Montero!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 9, 2010 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I was completely adamant the Yanks shouldn't go after Lee..

But look at this logically. With CC and Lee as your 1-2, then AJ and Andy going, how good would that be? The Yanks are known to go out and win NOW, not tomorrow. We have plenty of catching prospects. And Montero is not hitting the cover off the ball. .253 with 6 homers is not that great—In TRIPLE A ball, none-the-less. Who were the two aces in the World Series last year? CC and Lee, if they were together, they’d be next to unbeatable.

And I watch almost every Yankee game. Pitching wins World Series. And that’s the most important thing of all.

Let's cut through the crap, Vaughn. I only got one thing to say to you: "Strike this mother f*cker out."

No..

AAA is for players that are not good enough to be pros. AA is for players that are typically a step away from the majors. Hence Cervelli going from AA to Majors. And he’s hitting, what? .280?

Cervelli was older.

And Cervelli is an example of a player playing out of his level.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 9, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

He was playing out of his level..

When he was hitting .400. Not .280.
He could solidify at .280 and be set. No one though Gardner could hit .308, but he’s doing it.
Plus Cervelli is a better catcher than Montero.

by tclaro on Jul 9, 2010 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

That happens a lot. But you have a proven ACE that will be your number 2 guy if you get him, now! Who knows what Montero will give you?

I’ve been high on Montero (sounds like a drug) for a long time, too. But you get this opportunity to have 2 aces how often?

Exactly

This isn’t about getting Lee vs Montero. It’s about less than 1/2 season of Lee vs 7 seasons each of Montero and 2 other prospects.

Yeah Lee would change things and be a big push towards another ring, but Montero will provide tens of millions of dollars more surplus value beyond what Lee would give the team.

by metric on Jul 9, 2010 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

The only thing I can think of

Is the brass has decided Montero is not going to be a catcher for us and cannot seem him fitting in any other defense positions and no need for DH

this is what I wondered

If he is going to be ready in a year or two does he end up blocked at 1B anyway? Obviously he could still be a DH but if he’s not a catcher he’s not as valuable.

Lee fills a need

One of the best set-up man available in the bigs is Phil Hughes, and getting Lee away from our hitters should really help in any PS series.

I’m not a big fan of babying young starters, but Hughes looks like he hit some sort of wall. He had 7 0r more K’s in 6 of his first 10 starts, not once in the last 6 while his ERA ballooned from 2.54 to 3.83.

Agree no deal without extension so the Yanks get the starter they need for next season.

Ask Seattle about "Best Record"

It means nothing. WS Championships mean everything. Lee gets you a whole lot closer to that than the “Wonderment of AJ and Javy” while also hoping Hughes (deer in headlights last post-season) has really matured and Andy hasn’t yet aged by October.

I can’t believe this is even in play here. Lee is one of the best pitchers in baseball.

i would be happy to see Lee go back to the NL

I just think Montero will be of more value to us (along with the other 2 prospect not named) over the next 5 years than Lee will be if we could even get him for 5 years.

Also looking at his career stats, Lee actually doesnt have a long history of impressiveness. Yes you would be hard pressed to find a better pitcher since his stint back in the minors after ’07, but he also has some injury history, hes 31, hes made it known he wants to try the FA market, and i like our chances with who we have now.

What no one has mentioned is the fact that the Rays, Red Sox, Twins or Rangers would NOT get Lee and eliminate the possibility of exiting the playoffs early because they would have to face Lee twice. I think it’s a great signing and of course they will sign him again next year. Who wants to bet that AJ is going to be good in the playoffs or that 38 year old Pettitte won’t have some injury. That topped with Hughes’ innings limit and it does not sound so crazy to sign Lee. I am amazed that no one sees this as a good thing.

While we are working on getting a SP "just because hes an ace"

Could we work on a trade to get Longorio “because hes a great 3B”

Also lets try to trade for Crawford now “because hes the best LF”

I think we also need to trade for Dan Haren because he can K a lot, could be a good setup man

Somewhere in there we also can probably fit Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt

Hughes will go back to the pen, I guess this move strengthens the 8th inning.

Hughes can setup Mo, and limit his innings. I think they see Lee as the long term replacement for Andy. They must like Romine as a better all round catcher than Montero. I was hoping to see Montero though at some point in September. I thought he could pull a Shane Spencer circa 1998.

maybe...

but Montero is only 20. There could be a spot open for him on the team.

If he goes and pulls an AJAX with the M’s…..

Bye, Lee :(

DH is going to be crowded

if and when Teixeira and/or Rodriguez can’t field anymore during their long contracts.

I could live without Lee for all the reasons repeated ad nauseum above, but:

1. The Yankees have a bunch of catchers in the minors, better defensively than Montero.
2. Andy Pettitte is going to retire at some point.
3. Vazaquez, like him or hate him, is only signed for this year.
4. Hughes would not have his career killed by going back to set up for 2 1/2 months.
5. Someone could get hurt and Hughes wouldn’t go anywhere.

Those are all good points as well

It’s tricky.. I’m glad I’m not calling the shots on this one. Cashman won’t trade unless Lee agrees to an extension. I’m still not sold on it happening, but who knows?

All fair points

Andy retires and Javy leaves, what about Joba is he staying in the bullpen, what about the arms in the minors are they always going to be there, do they ever get a chance.
