Mariano Rivera Will Not Play In All Star Game

As reported earlier in the Boston Herald (of all places, right?), Mariano Rivera will be sitting out of the All Star game this year.

Here's the link:

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/other_mlb/view/20100707mariano_rivera_to_miss_all-star_game/srvc=home&position=recent

Apparently, Rivera has been playing through a sore right knee and an oblique issue during most of the first half. Is it surprising that he's STILL better than Jonathan Papelbon even when he's hurt? Rivera would rather take those days off in order to rest and regain his full strength. He was quoted saying, "It’s hard. But it’s a decision I have to make for myself, and for the sake of the team."

The man stands in his own class in two ways: The high-level way he plays the game of baseball, and the way he's a complete team player. We'll miss seeing you on the field Mariano, but PSA backs your decision to rest. Feel better, Mo.

Most importantly

I hope the injuries aren’t too serious. The Yankees, as we all know, cannot possibly afford to lose Mariano.

I wonder who will replace Rivera…?

Mariano has

skipped the ASG before. He’s very family oriented I think he prefers the time off.

Yeah I was actually going to comment that earlier

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.in an age of Professional baseball where exercising properly, and doing what the trainers tell them to do is the norm, ball players are bigger and stronger today then years ago. So can someone please tell me why in the hell is everyone worried about a pitch count and how many innings a pitcher throws.
Years ago when pitchers didn’t even bother to exercise, take wind sprints, and smoked in the dugout, I just don’t recall there arms falling off or a rash of sore arms.
They were handed the ball and told to pitch, when they got tired, and started getting hit, that was the time to take out the pitcher. That worked great for what 80 years LOL!
2.Who made Yankees management GOD over a player to decide if he can hit in the homerun derby. He just got into his first all star game as a starter and they pull this crap! That call is BS, Cano should tell them to stick it and do it anyway. Swinging a bat is going to hurt him? Give me a break. Has everyone turned into a wussy!

by Tricon111 on Jul 8, 2010 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

.... Um

A homerun derby, in the grand scheme of things, is not worth risking an injury over. It’s an exhibition batting practice that has messed up swings before. Also, what happened to Bobby Abreu post-2007 homerun derby? He hit 18 homers before the derby and was hitting .307. After he unleashed homers all over and won the derby, he hit 6 dingers after the ASG and batted .260 in that span.

The HRD is not worth risking further injury to his back or messing up his swing either.

In That Case.......

don’t even bother playing the regular season games, just make it a computer game this way no one gets hurt. And also don’t bother keeping score, because winning or lossing does not matter.
Ain’t life grand!

Whatever happened to just playing baseball with no Crying! For more then half his career Mantle wrapped his legs before every game in order to play with bad knees, did he complain or cry?
I am sorry but Ball players are being babied and the fans have tuned into babys along with them!

makes no sense?

Yankee front office decides Cano should not be in the HRD, tells the press without even saying a word to Cano. Then to make there point to Cano they bring in the doc to convince him and give him a day off to rest, as if they would have given him a day off if he would have not said anything.
And please don’t give that stupid excuse that Girardi stacked the lineup with all right handers, as if it were a playoff game. Besides Cano’s avg. is good lefty or righty.
The babying of players really needs to stop. Like holding the hand of a 33 year old pitcher, changing catchers because it was the catchers fault. And now the reason is the man who holds his hand was gone. You have got to be kidding me LOL
Brings back memories of Jim Piersall LOL~

You have a lot of complaints

if you don’t like how baseball is nowadays dont watch

he's making some valid points

and it’s not “how baseball is nowadays”, it’s the way the Yankees are nowadays. But you’re probably very young, feel entitled, and have been pampered your entire life like the rest of your “MTV” generation…Right?

LOL

Was that entire comment even necessary, I dont even know how to respond

by Yankees10 on Jul 8, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably not. My point was that if you like the way the Yankees have handled parts of their pitching staff the last couple years you were probably brought up the same way. I let go of my mommy’s hand at 17.

Wow

Nowadays?? Lets see a player gets picked to start in the all star game and is invited to compete in the hrd, how many times will this happen in a mans life? The guy is all excited, and what young ball player wouldn’t be.
But your right I see teams all over stopping there young players from playing in the all star game, or participating in the hrd, nowadays that is ! LOL Yea right.
The Yankee front office has no right to tell him not to participate. If he had decided not too, that would be a different story. Maybe they should not allow any Yankee to even go to the all star game, it may be to dangerous.
I have been watching baseball since 1964, and a Yankee fan every year. The game itself has not changed much over the years other then the DH rule in the AL. But over the last 2 or 3 years, not the way the game is played but how its coached/managed, with the babying of players, has gotten out of hand.
Last time I checked the Texas Ranger’s pitching staff still have all there arms, not one fell off yet. In fact that team is the biggest threat to the Yanks.

I’ll bet Clif Lee does not think so!

Yes, I find it hilarious that you still think the Rangers are the biggest threat to NY.

It’s pretty funny that this amazing Texas team, according to you at least, can’t even beat the Orioles.

Tricon,

you’re wasting your time. As you’ll soon find out, some on here can never believe that someone other than themselves can have a valid point…

Two kinds of fans

One who know’s the game, and the other that is told what to believe and think about the game.
I call them lamb’s, there not old enough yet to be sheep LMAO!

NO!

I’m sure you know how the game is played and all the rules.
I’m also sure you know the Yankees inside and out.
What I’m saying is every time the Yankee front office or management speaks, and also NY reporters comment on a player Yankee or other, it’s ok to disagree and actually have your own opinion on it!
