Game 82: Road Trip
New York Yankees at Oakland Athletics, Jul 5, 2010 10:05 PM EDT
The Yankees begin a seven-game West Coast road trip tonight in Oakland.
Vs.
Sheets has faced the Yanks just twice in his career - once in 2005 and once in April of this year when he allowed two runs in six innings. Overall though, he's had a mighty disappointing year. His ERA (4.98), WHIP (1.47) and walk rates (3.6/9) are all career highs.
We'll see if the Yankee lineup can produce without the aid of the sun, which by some estimates, drove in five runs in the Toronto series.
An overflow thread will post at 11:30 p.m. EST.

Curious to see what people think
Was it the year off, a switch to the AL, or just bad mechanics that have caused Sheets’ struggling this year?

Bad control
His walk rate is at a career high and his strikeout rate is his lowest since 2003. A 13.1% HR/FB rate doesn’t help, either. That stuff on top of everything you mentioned.
I’m going to pin it on his injury riddled past and some bad luck, and here’s why:
His opponents BABIP is at .304 (.290 in ‘08), a tad high, his strand percent is down at 69.6% (75.5 in ’08), his HR/FB is up to 13.1% (7% in ’08) and he’s been getting killed on his fastball because he’s lost velocity.
So far this year, Sheets is at -14.2 runs with his fastball, compared to a +19.2 runs in ‘08 (and has been consistently positive with it in his career). In ’08 his average fastball was 92.6 MPH, and this year it’s at 91.4, which is the slowest of his career and a pretty sizable difference.
So if you asked me to diagnose Ben Sheets, I would say that his peripherals are worse partly because of bad luck, and partly because his continual arm injuries have somewhat lessened his ability to throw a quality fastball.

To be fair though, it sounds like Braden's mad about it.

It’s not a big deal unless there’s a bunch of pictures, and we’ll have an overflow anyway, so don’t even worry about it.
But, FYI, you can see how big a picture will be by using the “Preview” button at the bottom, and you can manipulate the height of a picture like so:
<img src =" URL of the picture goes here " “height =”300" /> This will conform the picture to a height of 300 pixels, which is a pretty good size.

Was wondering when that was going to happen
Could be a jump start for Jeter
by Jedi Master A-Rod on Jul 5, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t like the move.
With Grandy hitting 7th, Curtis hitting 9th, and GGBG hitting 1st, we’ve got 3 out of 4 hitters in a row being lefties. How are those guys are GOING to see one of the THREE lefties the A’s have in the pen? (which probably means Thames as a PH, but still)
It just makes the lineup needlessly un-staggered just because Sheets is a righty and we’re trying to stack lefties in the starting lineup. What’s the point of moving Jeter now? Especially with Curtis batting 9th?
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
Why? Jeter is the active leader in grounding into double plays.

Batting the fast guys first, simply because they’re fast is 1970s talk. Maybe we should bat Joey Gathright first?
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
no i'm not saying he should bat first b/c he;s fast
just saying maybe his speed can prevent Capt. DP from hitting into too many Dp’s
And he’ll hit into even less double plays if he’s batting first and there’s nobody on base. Gardner’s not going to hit into a DP either way, and can steal in any situation, what’s the point in switching them and giving GGBG the double play protection, when he’s so friggin fast that he doesn’t need it?
If the goal is to avoid Jeter DPs, batting him first makes the most sense. BUT, Gardner has been drastically outperforming Jeter in all of the important lead off stats, so I don’t dislike it other than the lefty-righty-lefty-lefty 7,8,9, and 1 in the lineup.

He really soured on Phoenix, even with playing with a maestro like Steve Nash and making the playoffs every year. I don’t know how he’ll be in New York if the rebuilding continues for a few more years.
But I do think he’ll appreciate getting back in a Pringles offense.

Amare is a special talent because he’s really athletic, has good hands, and is a great finisher, which are some of the main things you want in a big guy.
But I feel like he really needs a set up guy. Like have you ever noticed how many of his points come off of dunks from perfect pick and roll feeds from Steve Nash?

he does...
but Toney Douglas can run it well. Shit, Chris Duhon ran it well, but he can’t shoot (Douglas can).
Ridnaur can run it well too, and he’s a good shooter.
And of course, Lebonbon + Amare would be an incredible P&R tandem. James is a great passer.
Pringles I think even said that Buns would be the PG for him, just like Nash.

Agreeance with Duggan upthread re: Jeter -
I don’t like the move to 2ndin the line-up. Why? I mean only answer I can think of is, Garner earned it and that’s the best reason. But I see know need to mess with success right now. Jeter’s been having a good year there and the Yanks have been the best team in the league with this line-up.
If anything, I’d put Tex there but he’s been heating up so I’d not change anything in the line-up.

If I remember correctly, this isn't GGBG's first time in the leadoff spot
the worst that could happen this early in the season is that Joe decides this doesn’t work for GGBG or El Capitan, and he doesn’t do it again. They already have 50 wins and it’s before the ASB, so it’s not like they are in a serious race for the playoffs already.
Who knows, maybe Gardy’s speed and Jeter’s hitting will combine to get plenty of opportunities for Tex, ARod, Cano.
That is terrible...

Quick fantasy question
since im at a crossroads
i have curtis granderson
the rest of my outfield is great (shallow league)
J Upton, Ethier, gardner, hart, coghlan, byrd
so granderson just sits on my bench since he sucks
my pitching is very strong and deep and in the playoffs (H2H)
we have limited moves, so i cant add many players during the playoffs for spot starts
i was considering adding either nolasco, scherzer, or floyd since they are doing well
what should i do, and who should i add?

Posada is out, so adding Cervelli puts another RH bat in the lineup against the right. By moving Swish to DH, we can rest Swish and put Curtis in RF, getting an extra LH bat.
Girardi likes to do this, like he would use Posada as DH and catch Molina last year in some games started by a lefty just to stack some RH bats.
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
That makes sense
I suppose that’s the same reason GGBG is lead-off tonight, since that puts a lefty against the right-handed pitcher

That would be OK - but I don't know much about San Jose and if they have the population to support a team.
The A’s are a great franchise that’s been around, starting in Philadelphia as a great franchise. If they move on that’s OK but I’d hate to see them go to a smaller market and then not draw fans consistently.

Since the face been revealed the game got real
Yes, but there's no reason he couldn't be resigned.
He’s a good pitcher. He makes the rotation better.
by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jul 5, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions
The Yankees will offer him arbitration before he leaves for free agency.
If he continues to struggle, he might prefer to stay in NY and take a similar pay level (I believe he makes 11 or 11.5 MM this season) for a year or two than go to free agency.
And if he does leave, we get two compensatory draft picks.
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
I think they offer him arbitration and offer Pettitte a similar contract to his contract this year.
Their answers will dictate their future plans for Joba in my opinion.
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
I want that as well. I’d love Andy, Joba in the rotation, and 2 draft picks from Javy.
But if Javy comes back, I can deal with another year (or at that point, most likely a career) of Joba in teh pen cuz he trows teh fastballz hardah as Big Mikey would say.
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
I think Joba would rather be a starter
There is no big money in being a set up guy, perhaps that is why he isnt what he once was.
Yeah, he either wants to be a starter or a closer, because that’s where the money is. And he’s not closing for the Yankees any time soon (hopefully).
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
I think he can do it (if he learns how to mix pitches and not just throw) but I would much rather he gets straightened out by throwing inside fastballs to righties, throwing curveballs for strikes, and working on his changeup movement in the rotation.
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
i just assumed
he wouldn’t be resigned well what about lee is that a done deal he is being pursued by the yanks ???? i think so but….

No reason to take on another huge salary
Take into account, they have to pay Jeter and Mo too. They will not go over 200 Mill anymore.
why cause if they keep having a gross payroll then we'll get a salary cap????
Since the face been revealed the game got real
No. Because wasting money is stupid, and there is a limited supply of it.
You can’t just willingly sign an infinite number of bad contracts just because they’re the Yankees.
We’re already going to be saddled with bad contracts in the coming years with Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, Burnett, etc.
Cliff Lee should literally be a last resort with the state of the team right now. Instant gratification fans just drool over him because he’s good right now and “available.”
Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com
If anybody should grab Lee, its the Mets
Yanks dont need him even if Andy retires. We have pitchers we are developing too, right?
Maybe we should sign Crawford and Werth, too.
And Cervelli only knows who else.

But Yanks wont be the only ones on Lee, I doubt they get tinto a bidding war for a 32 year old pitcher.

"Chicks who dig home runs aren't the ones who appeal to me. I think there's sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I'd rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out." - Ichiro

He’s guessing I believe. And I tend to assume he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I really hope not. If we lose Ace for the year that’s a HUGE deal.

Joey Votto absolutely murdered the Mets tonight
3-4, 2 HR, 3 runs scored, and his 58th and 59th RBI of the year.
You think he’s a little bit mad over being snubbed?
