Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Trade Deadline Updates, Open Thread

UPDATE: 4:43 EST: The Red Sox got a second deal done just before the deadline. Ken Rosenthal is reporting Jarrod Saltalamacchia is now a member of the Sox.

UPDATE: 4:40 EST: Chan Ho Park has been designated for assignment to make room for Kerry Wood, according to Pete Caldera.

UPDATE: 4:34 EST: Here is the Yankees lineup for tonight's game, which was first reported by Ben Shpigel: 1. Jeter, 2. Berkman (dh), 3. Teixeira, 4. Rodriguez, 5. Cano, 6. Swisher, 7. Granderson, 8. Cervelli, 9. Gardner

UPDATE 4:23 EST by jscape: Berkman was just on MLB Network, and he said he'll be hitting second tonight.  Jeter-Berkman-Tex-Arod-Cano-Swisher-Granderson-Posada-Gardner looks nice against RHP.

UPDATE: 4:14 EST: Yankees favorite Kyle Farnsworth has been traded along with Rick Ankiel to the Braves, according to Danny Knobler. The Red Sox didn't stay completely pat, they traded Ramon Ramirez to the Giants, reports Gordon Edes.

UPDATE: 3:46 EST: PTBNL or cash for Wood. Quick analysis: Wood's numbers look worse than they should. Has a high walk rate (5/9 ip), but not totally out of whack with his norms (4.3/9), but a ridiculously high hit rate (9.5/9), but seems to be suffering from bad luck. Still a good K rate (8.1/9), and a very low LD rate (15%) with a somewhat high .319 BABIP and rather good GB rate (43%, higher than his career norm). He should be due for some regression (in a good way). His stuff is still there: averaging 95 MPH on his fastball.

UPDATE: 3:42 EST: White CC and Juan Miranda are taken off the 25 man roster to make room for Berkman and Kearns, according to Ben Shipgel.

UPDATE: 3:31 EST: Olney has more: the Indians will be eating a lot of Wood's contract. Joel Sherman tweets that the deal is done, pending approval. Wood has about $3.8 million left on this years contract and an $11 million club option for next season, tweets Sherman. Wood is 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA on the season. Wood has 8 saves, 18 strikeouts, and 11 walks on the season. 21 hits allowed in 20 innings for the hard throwing righty, who has appeared in 23 games.

UPDATE 3:23 EST by Travis: Yanks close to getting Kerry Wood, according to Buster Olney.

UPDATE: 2:15 EST: The Red Sox rumors have picked up. Ken Rosenthal has the names of relievers that the Sox are interested in, while Gordon Edes has the names of relievers that the Sox want to trade. Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Cubs have agreed on a deal that sends Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers for Blake DeWitt and prospects. Many outlets have reported this. Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees are targeting a utility infielder. Adam Dunn is in the Nationals lineup for tonights game.

UPDATE: 1:34 EST: The Berkman deal is now official, so the Yankees can't be Lee'd by the Astros! Here's the press release for Berkman, and here's the release for Kearns. When we find out who's been demoted, I'll update it.

UPDATE: 1:04 EST by jscape: I'm keeping Brandon's Open Thread at the top of the page, but be sure to take a look at my work on Lance Berkman at Yankee Stadium.

UPDATE: 12:38 EST: Jayson Stark reports that the Cubs and Dodgers are close to a deal that would send Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Ludwick to Padres, Westbrook to Cardinals deal is done according to Bob Nightengale.

UPDATE: 12:30 EST: Jon Heyman says that the Giants are in "serious talks" for either Scott Downs or Jason Frasor. Meanwhile, the market for Manny Ramirez is heating up, Tim Brown of Yahoo tweets.

UPDATE: 11:58 EST: Tom Krasovic reports the Westbrook to Cardinals deal is a three team trade that would send Ryan Ludwick to the Padres.

UPDATE: 11:36 EST: Missed this one yesterday, the Yankees can activate Lance Berkman at 1:30 PM EST, according to Joel Sherman. The Rays acquired Chad Qualls for a player to be named later according to Jon Heyman. The Cardinals are close to a deal for Jake Westbrook, tweets Paul Hoynes.

This will be your open thread for the trade deadline today. Also, I will update this from now until 5:00ish EST with any trades or moves that affect the Yankees. After that you might get an hour of no updates, but then the game thread will go up at the usual time for a 7:00 game.

While I will be updating this frequently, if you want up to the minute news, check out MLB Daily Dish (where I'm an editor!) and the Yankees rumors page at SB Nation New York (where Ed runs the show!)

Cardinals have a very solid rotation

I’m curious as to how the NL plays out this year… a handful of good teams for the first time in a while.

I like the Westbrook trade

for all teams, Westbrook stabilizes the back end of the cards rotation and Ludwick gives the Padres a bat, even though Ludwick is one of the worst base runners I’ve ever seen every time I watch the cards he makes a terrible mistake. Not sure the prospects going to Cleveland but any little bit will help them rebuild.

Getting old

What nonsense that the Yankees are pulling out their wallets.
Did we get the most sought after player – NO NOT even close.
Lee – Texas
There will be over 15 players moving and we are just one of 8 teams thinking playoff run.

The Berkman deal was minimal money and the Old Yankees late 80’s would have paid more for Berkman. The Kearns deal cost peanuts. Or One night of Hotdogs at the stadium.
Phillies in 2.5 years acquired Lee, Halladay and Oswalt.
The Angels went for D Lee and every year make moves.

Its great to be in Pinstripes

Are you joking? I really can’t tell

Since the face been revealed the game got real

by BL3ACH on Jul 31, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

You realize that the Yankess will likely get Lee at FA time this year

Oswalt was way to expensive and we really don’t need him. Berkman was a great deal. We only pay 3 million and give up Nova and the other guy Paradies (spelling). And really the Philles? They gave up half their farm system for all three and Lee isn’t even on the team. Halladay is fantastic but the Phils can’t score runs when he starts. And Lee declined the trade to ANA and the Angels season is likely over.
And yes it is great to be in pinstripes!

Upgrade Pen

Hughes will do that automatically. Yes they can add a lefty RP – but no major deal.
I believe I heard that the way the TV deals are worked out this year the Yanks can use a 3 man rotation throughout the playoffs and actually give guys 4-5 days rest.
If thats the case J Vasquez and Hughes will be live arms in the Pen

Getting Old

I was not joking – What I’m saying is there are plenty of teams making deals and not just the Yanks. Yes the Yanks have the highest payroll and we all know that and that is not going to change especially since MLB is overall in a healthy state. I truly believe the Pirates are worse for baseball when discussing the business of baseball.

Finally, what I’m say is the writers like Rosenthal need to get more interesting and write about something new. Blah Blah Blah -

Kearns will bat against LH pitchers. You can sit Granderson if you must and play Kearns with no worries about defense, Gardner in CF.

I actually like the Kearns move better. Solid move for the bench.

And I wanted to jab him in the eye with a pen.

His lineup:

Jeter

A-Rod
Berkman
Posada
Cano

that wouldn't make sense

A-Rod just DH’d less than a week ago and he’s one of the only hitters in the lineup with success against Garza. Plus, this is sort of a really important series- you don’t give your best player the day off in the middle of a series like this anyways.

I doubt he’s batting fourth. A-Rod will be in there.

I'm a pretty big Kerry Wood fan

I have been since his 20 strikeout game back in 1998. I’d hoped that the Cubs would hold onto Wood after the 2008 season, but we’ve really been watching Carlos Marmol come into his own this season as the closer. Say what you want about Woody, but he’s a gamer and going to a contender should re-energize him.

They’re not giving up anything at all. If he’s bad, DFA him. If he’s good, well, then he’d really help.

It also helps that he was teammates with Girardi

I’m sure Joe put in a good word for Kerry. Kerry’s a real team player, but whether or not he’ll be effective is another story.

That’s what he said on MLBN.

It makes some sense to me, though I like Swish there. I think Swish has a little more power at this point, so it makes sense to move Nick down in the lineup.

As the main "Chan Ho Park Hater" of this site I would just like to tell all of you...

I told you so! None of you agree with me when back in spring training I said that not only would Park be nothin more than a mop-up man but would also be off the team before the end of July. In my opipiom this was the best move we made at the deadline. We could have just released him, not made any trade and I would have been more than satisfied. I am so glad that the embarassment of the franchise is finally gone and he won’t be missed at all. He was our version of Oliver Perez and the only difference was that Park was being payed much less. The diarrhea video was the only thing Park did this year that was anything close to productive.

The last thing at have to say about Park is that I guarantee that Thursdays embarassing performance is the last time we will ever see Chan Ho Park pitch in the majors. Maybe someone will give him a shot in Triple-A but no team in the majors would be smart in wasting a spot on the 25 or even 40 man rosters on Chan Ho Park. Thanks for the diarrhea Park but don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
