Ready for the Rays

Little CC needs to practice his victory jump a little more often.

Little CC needs to practice his victory jump a little more often.

RHP Phil Hughes vs. RHP Wade Davis (just what the Rays need, another promising young pitcher)

RHP Javier Vazquez vs. RHP Matt Garza (fresh off his no hitter)

LHP CC Sabathia vs. RHP James Shields (his sudden surge in K/9 has hidden the rise in his H/9 and his HR/9, for now)

The Rays are on a hot streak right now, having won 8 of their 10 games since dropping 2 of 3 to the Yankees.

Of course, the Yanks aren't doing too poorly themselves, having gone 9-4 since the All Star Break.

The Rays are hoping some major reinforcement arrives this weekend, while the Yankees are looking to tweak the bench/pen.

August is nearly here, and the pennant race starts in earnest tonight.

Big series

both team’s playing well, the Yanks offer pretty much their 3 best pitchers at this point, the Rays their 3 hottest pitchers, Garza probably in line for a stinker after the no-no, tho the Yanks seem to find a way to buck a trend with that.

Thank you to Dustin Moseley. That game really could’ve killed the pen going into this series, but he pitched great and ate innings (and of course got the Dub). That’s the type of outing that makes you wonder why the hell you would go and make a big splash for a starter, when someone like Moseley can go and get you 6 strong against the friggin Indians.

I woundn’t expect that out of him all the time, but that’s the type of start you can build off of. Maybe that’s the dude that can fill in for Hughes when he needs to be skipped?

To the Moseley comment. Wouldn’t you know, the Yankees break down and let a youngin get a shot and he did well. Hopefully we’ll skip on the free agent pitchers, save some money for an outfielder with some pop, and continue to let some of the guys from within get their chances.

Wouldn't even worry about the OF either...

unless its an DH/OF type you’re talking about. The Yanks OF is fine the way it is. If Grandy keeps playing like himself, its a lot better then last year.

I wouldn’t mind going after a pitcher if Andy’s gone too.

Don’t see what kind of out fielder is going to help us. The out field we have now is playing great in the field and the corner guys are both having career years. Grandy is even starting to come alive.

18-6 in July

is not a record worthy of adding another starter. They should get the pen and bench stronger. I would be surprised if they don’t do this.

Did you see Thames at third last night? Definitely one of those WOW!….oh shit moments. I think he’s made an error in every way possible at this point? dropping balls in right, throwing into the press box, and injuring himself stepping on his own bat. Classic.

If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

Don’t need to face him now when we will likely face him twice toward the end of the season

So long as Arod keeps hitting and driving in runs, I’m not going to mention it again until it happens. That’s why I left it out of last night’s recap. It’ll come, so long as he’s not pressing and slumping, I don’t care when.

he’s driving in a ton of runs this year and i could care less if he hits #600 now or in september. as long he keeps driving those runs in he’s valuable.

Watch something silly happen

like a fly hitting one of those speakers or catwalks and a bunch of controversy over it was a HR or not.

The Rays are very aware of A-Rod. They have had enough history against them recently. I think they will pitch around him unless someting drastic happens.

I won't be an ass and say YANKS NEED TO SWEEP

But I think the Yankees can’t really afford to lose this series to the Rays. If we get swept, we’ll be in 2nd place. With CC pitching one of the games, I doubt that will happen.

We will likely face them in the ALDS

if the season ended today with TB facing Texas.

Yes...and we want to do everything possible to avoid a short series against Cliff Lee

I still think Minny will pull it together and Chicago will come back to earth a little.

by PortlandYankee on Jul 30, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

cliff lee and texas’ lineup in a short series are a dangerous combination (even thoush i think kinsler went on the dl yesterday). they do have a rookie closer though, and if we can handle someone like nathan in last yrs ALDS we could hopefully handle a rookie in that situation

by BronxBeliever on Jul 30, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I've thought all along Minnesota takes the AL central

I’ll stick to that pick… Chicago will falter unless they acquire Dunn

Oh dear

I’m scared too!!! What if he comes in and throws a 180 pitch no hitter against the Yanks in the postseason?

I am frightened!

No need to sweep, Yanks, 2 out of 3 will be just fine

Then again, if they decide to sweep, who am I to complain?

That said, getting swept will be a HUGE blow to winning the division. I doubt that happens, the Yanks taking 2/3 is what I think’ll hapen.

by Edgware on Jul 30, 2010 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

I'm fine with 1 out of 3.

Just win one game. That guarantees leaving this series still in 1st place. If the Yanks win more than one, great!

Two out of three

whatever you do, do NOT get swept. I’m not worried though.

Hope A-Rod stays hot through all this. Even though he’s not homering, he’s still managing to drive in runs. He may not even get to 30 HR this year (although I expect he still will) and he’s still going to drive in over 120 runs. Thats fine by me. Keep producing and coming through in the clutch. 600 will come. Eventually.

Hughes should be dominant cuz he’s on the road again. Vasquez has been brilliant since his bad April. And CC is his normal, fat, cheeseburger loving self. I like the matchups. Now take the series.

No David P

Not that the Rays needed him. But the Yanks will not face their ace this time around. Which is great. Looking forward to this series….. 2 gms up. August and the best two teams in MLB are battling this week. A great way to start the dog days of August. LET’ GO YANKEES!!!
