Johnny Damon or Brett Gardner????? Did Cashman Finally make a good move

Damon : G 91 , AB 330,BA .282, HR 6, RBI 30, OBP .374, SLG .424, OPS .794

Gardner : G 91, AB 305, BA . 295, HR 5, RBI 34, OBP .389, SLG .397 , OPS .785

Last night i was watching the Tigers 9Th inning after the Yank got shut down by a rookie. When i was watching the game Damon came up and had a 10 pitch at bat. It got me thinking are missing Damon at all. If you look at the numbers other than Slg and Ops Gardner is doing better. I know that Gardner is entering his prime and Damon is on the down fall. It just seems like if you had to pick one of the 2 for a at bat in the playoffs i would take Damon in a Heart beat. Maybe in 2-3 years i would take Gardner but I do miss those Johnny Rocket.

While I would’ve loved the Yankees to Damon, there’s no denying that Gardner has been the better player. While Damon hits for more power, (although not this year) Gardner is a better hitter, ex. 2 strikes, RISP. Gardner as we all know is one of the fastest in MLB. He is also a superb outfielder and a very accurate and strong arm. The thing that jumps the most out to me is that Gardner leads the MAJORS in pitches per plate appearance at 4.60, the next closest is Ortiz at 4.43.

Going for #28

not a strong arm

it’s very accurate and he gets rid of the ball quickly, but I wouldn’t call his arm “strong”.

Happy Birthday A-Rod! Now please hit #600 already.

Strong for a LF. Average for CF.

Gardner has been great this year

although let me point out a couple things. Johnny Damon would be MUCH better playing on the Yankees, I guarantee that. A higher average, more power, and more RBI. Why? Well, he’d be hitting behind Mark Teixeira and getting a ton of fastballs, and he’d also be playing in Yankee Stadium, and that right field short porch that he loves so much. He’d come up more often with runners on base, and more chances to drive in runs.

Gardner has been the better player this year. Although if it’s a question of are the Yankees better off with Damon’s bat in the #2 hole or without it, the answer is obvious. They are better with it.

Happy Birthday A-Rod! Now please hit #600 already.

Hitting in "front" of Tex

I would have like to had both of them, Damon DH’ing. There’s no telling…

by david d on Jul 29, 2010 3:20 AM EDT up reply actions

yea thats what I meant

He should be here as the DH. That would push Swish and his high OBP lower in the lineup and deepen the lineup altogether, rather than having backups and minor leaguers starting every game.

Damon is a better batter right now. Gardner is a better everything else.

Damon has more power than Gardner, which ballpark effects are disguising this year. Damon also has a wealth of experience in clutch and postseason situations, which Gardner does not, as of yet. Although Gardner is hitting .295, he is not a “proven” .295 hitter. We would be disappointed, but not shocked, if he hit .265 next year.

On the other hand, Gardner is likely to improve, he is just entering his prime, Damon is likely to drop off a bit more every year. Gardner is much faster in the outfield, getting to every fly ball that can be gotten to. Gardenr’s arm is at least average (he has a pile of assists due to opposing runners thinking he can’t throw at all, that won’t continue much longer). Damon’s throwing arm? Let’s not go there. Damon is an excellent baserunner, while Gardner still makes the occasional mistake, but damon’s base stealing days are nearly over, Gardner can take a base any time he likes, go first to third any time he likes, etc. Gardner can also bunt, and could hit 1st, 2nd, or 9th.

On the whole, Gardner is the player you want. Next year, even more so.

I would take Brett Gardner 10 times out of 10

Gardner is a much more efficient base-runner and fielder than Damon. When I say much more efficient… I mean MUCH. Damon can’t come close to reaching the infield from the warning track.. Gardner has a cannon and gets to balls much faster. I don’t think Dampn even has Garder as a better hitter. Gardner works the count much better and can steal his way into scoring position to make up for his lower slugging percentage.

By the way.. to say Cashman finally made a good move is probably the most foolish thing I’ve ever heard on here.

Gardner also makes less than $1 million whereas Damon is between $8-9 million

There is no comparison

+1, the deciding factor really is how much cheaper GGBG is, and when you throw in the defense and not throwing like a girl, GGBG has been much better.

GGBG has been worth +6.9 runs so far in the field (can play LF or CF), Johnny Damon DHs about 2/3 of the time. Right now, the value of GGBG > the value of Damon

Not for nothing

But Gardner’s ABs last night were 4, 6 and 7 pitches. He’s averaging 4.61 pitches per PA.
Damon is averaging 4.12 pitches per PA.

When did mlb.com start to suck for stats? They don’t even list PA in their stats any more!

Damon v Gardner

The court orders the case to be dismissed as there’s no conclusive evidence that either of the parties is truly better than the other at this time. The court also orders that the case be resubmitted after both parties have retired from MLB at which point comparisons can more fairly be made.

At the time in which the evaluation is made, any and all metrics can and will be used to compare the two parties, including any metric that accounts for differences in ballparks played in and leagues played in (if either party is employed in both leagues by the end of their career).

No. A Temporary Restraining Order is granted directing Damonphiles to stand down.

Said order preserves the status quo (Gardner superior right now), fairly balances the equities (who the hell wants Damon defending left field?), and Gardner is more likely to prevail at a trial on the merits. A Preliminary Injunction Hearing is hereby scheduled in ten days.

I have a man crush on Brett Gardner

I love um, hes exactly the kinda player the Yankees don’t have. Hes like a guy that should be on the Rays or the Rockies or even the Red Sox but hes not hes a Yankee and hes awesome.

I really don’t see a comparison to Damon and Gardner just because Damon would of been mostly a DH, signing Nick Johnson? Dumb. If we resigned Damon and just Ignored Nick “Big bag of useless shit” Johnson than we could of had them both. We would of been even better.

by Smallz LOS on Jul 29, 2010 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

yup

Yankees wasted a total of around 8 million I think on the likes of Nick Johnson, Randy Winn, Chad Gaudin, and Chan Ho Park. That 8 million could have gone to Damon. There’d be a lot less DFA talk around here for sure.

Not Fair to Compare

a LF/CF with a DH. Gardner wins any comparison involving LF play, no contest factoring in center. Damon probably get the nod as a DH and certainly is a major upgrade over Nick Johnson (My bad, though Nick Johnson would lead league in Runs this year)

by steelerwheeler on Jul 29, 2010 10:39 AM EDT reply actions

Me too. What a disappointment NJ has been. But Boras never wanted to sign for as little as Damon wound up signing for.

Damon to the Yanks

Any trade rumors? Tigers are done, not Dunn.

by steelerwheeler on Jul 30, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea

I’d sign up for a Damon/Thames righty lefty DH platoon in a heartbeat with Gardy playing Left. Anyone know what the Tigers stance is at the deadline? I’d welcome Johnny back with open arms..

by Smallz LOS on Jul 29, 2010 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Damon wanted to be in left.

I doubt he’d accept being a platoon DH

by Edgware on Jul 29, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

he wouldn't platoon

he’d be the every day DH. Thames may get some starts with lefties on the mound while Damon plays the OF, but thats it. Damon would not be a platoon player if he comes back.

No point having the discussion though. He’s not coming back this year. The Tigers are in the race, they aren’t sellers.

I am sure he'd play some left

It could be a good answer for a tough lefty, you play Damon in Left, Garnder in Center and Thames DH, give Granderson a day off also if theres one mark on Gardy, he does tend to get hurt and take days off cause he plays so hard. It just adds to the versatility of the lineup ya know. The only move I wanna see them make is someone who can play 3rd when A-Rod DHS and is better bat than Ramiro Pena ie Melvin Mora, Ty Wigginton guys like that.

by Smallz LOS on Jul 29, 2010 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

In the end, I doubt the Tigers are sellers, they aren't that out of it yet.

5.5 GB right now, it’s not that bad.
