Appreciating Nick Swisher
via blog.nj.com
When the Yankees traded Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez for Nick Swisher and Kanekoa Texeira last November, I wasn’t sure what to think. After all, every Yankee fan was thinking about how nicely CC Sabathia would look in pinstripes. The only time I had ever heard of this Nick Swisher character was back in his Oakland days when he would crush the ball with tremendous power. I also recognized that he would have to shave the mop off his head and clean himself up to become part of the Yankee organization! I figured he would fit nicely around eighth in the lineup and should provide some solid on-base percentage as well as some pop. What I never expected, however, was how important he would become to the Yankees.
The impact of Swisher’s presence in the clubhouse and with the team was almost immediate. The Yankees had an extra bounce in their step during spring training that could be directly contributed to Swisher as well as Damon and Burnett. Although neither I nor anyone else on PSA was in the clubhouse, everyone could tell the difference in attitude. The Yankees always carried themselves in the fashion of win, win and only win. They now have fun while doing it and seem much more relaxed under the bright spotlight of New York. Swisher’s jokes and antics were definitely much appreciated by the fans, and he was welcomed warmly by the Bleacher Creatures in the Bronx.
His numbers, looking back, did not appear all that special from last year. To the simplistic baseball fan, Swisher’s statistics looked fairly average. They read…
2009 Statistics - .249 batting average, 29 homers, 82 RBI.
*Note - For whatever reason, those statistics have been the norm when it comes to measuring a baseball player’s ability.
Taking a closer look at his 2009 season, for a primarily 8-spot hitter, his numbers were excellent.
2009 extended statistics - .371 OBP, .375 wOBA, 132 wRC+, 3.6 WAR
Swisher was very effective at getting on base and creating runs for the Yankees in 2009. Being paid $5.4 million was basically a bargain for New York to have Swisher holding down the fort in rightfield. He was an inexpensive option compared to other big-time outfielders. Not to mention, Swisher filled in for the Bombers when they ran out of pitchers against Tampa Bay in April.
Despite Swisher batting poorly in the postseason, he helped carry the Yankees to their 27th World Series Championship in 2009.
Fast-forward to 2010.
I don’t think ANYONE expected Swisher to play like he has thus far this year. Even the average baseball fan would think that Swisher has been great this year. Through 92 games, Swisher has a career-high .301 batting average, 18 homers, 59 RBI.
But he has been so, so much better than those statistics. His strikeout percentage has dropped from 25.3% to 22.2%, his on-base percentage has increased from .371 to .375, slugging percentage increased from .498 to .537, a ridiculous .341 BABIP, .394 wOBA and 148 wRC+. Nick Swisher has transcended himself from an above-average 8-spot hitter to a great #2 hitter. He’s also on pace to score over 100 runs for the first time since 2006.
He isn’t the greatest fielder because he was originally signed to be a 1st baseman (starting or backup, we weren't sure at the time). However, he gets the job done. It’s hard to disagree with the fact that everyone loves Swisher. His widely recognized "Swisher Salute" to answer the Roll Call has become a fixture. As a bleacher creature myself, I always look forward to seeing the bleachers stand in unison when Swisher jogs out and pumps everyone up. He has had numerous big hits this year, most notably going 3 for 5 on July 16 when he stroked a walk-off single for Shep and The Boss. One of the most respectful gestures I’ve seen from a player was when he hit the game-tying homerun that night and kissed the newly embroidered GMS patch on his chest while crossing homeplate.
Another moment worth noting was on July 24 when Swisher came into the game in the 9th inning after pinch-hitting for Colin Curtis. The bleachers stood up and cheered loudly for Nick and gave him his own roll call IN THE 9TH INNING. Personally, I’ve never seen this before and thought this was the ultimate sign of respect for a player.
Nick Swisher embraced the mystic and aura of the Yankee family when he came to New York, and the fans have definitely embraced him back. He's our All Star outfielder! Here’s to many more seasons of the Swisher Salute in rightfield!

Last year the trade for Swish
was just about as lopsided as you can get. To this point it looks like one of the greatest trades in Yanks history for what he was given up for (turds).

One of the best trades in Cashman's GM career
he traded a useless utility infielder that couldn’t hit or play defense and had no value to the team whatsoever for a 2010 All-Star, HR Derby participant, and has done an excellent job replacing Johnny Damon as the #2 hitter in the Yankee lineup.
Incredible trade. Swish is great in the clubhouse, great eye, has pop, and now he’s hitting for average too. That speaks to his work ethic, as I don’t think anyone worked harder in the offseason than Nick Swisher (who apparantly also asked Dave Eiland to help him with his throwing to give him a stronger arm). He’s the Yankee right fielder, and he’ll be the right fielder for the next few years at least.
Remember during spring of last year when he was supposed to be a bat off the bench to back up Xavier Nady? Nothing against Nady, who crushes lefties and was great late in 2008 (but not enough), but I think him getting hurt was one of the best things to happen to this team.
Happy Birthday A-Rod! Now please hit #600 already.
he's been hitting some bombs post HR Derby.
maybe it helped him?

Bingo
One of the best trades in Cashman’s GM career ..Let’s leave it at that. The Yanks committed grand theft in the 70’s with the likes of Piniella, Nettles, Chambliss, Randolph, Rivers and Figueroa in the same deal, That would be Ed Figueroa for those wondering, a 19 game winner.
Lest we forget, Cater for Sparky Lyle.

I remember being kind of bummed when Nady went down – funny to look back at that now. Cashman has made a name for himself around the league as a guy that is primarily better at throwing money at free agents than trading. This is by far at the top of his list in my book, unless someone less lazy wants to fanpost about his moves since replacing Watson, who was a genious.
If you're a real Yankee fan, please do the rest of us a favor and splurge the extra cash on a replica jersey without a last name on the back. Frankly, it's embarassing.

Great post. I have just one thing to add-
He was acquired because he could play first base. At the time, Teixeira had not been signed, and Swish was insurance at 1st. There was a fair amount of grumbling that he was no replacement for Giambi nor a substitute for Teixeira.
I loved him last year when he drew a ton of walks and got the most production possible from his .249 average. This year he has replaced walks with hits, and his defense has been steadier- not uniformly great, but more reliable.
Are any of the 3 guys the Yankees gave up to get him even on a major league roster? I haven’t heard Wilson Breathmint’s name since last year.

Betemit
is on the Royals and has a triple slash of .355/.424/.623 with an OPS of 1.055 in 29 games so far this year.
Didn’t you recognize him when we played the Royals?

Marquez
pitched one game for the White Sox, ironically against the Royals and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits (one being a HR) in one inning of work.
And Nunez hasn’t pitched in the majors this year, though he pitched a little bit (5.2 innings) for the White Sox last year.
Apologies for not mentioning All-Star status
I was in a rush and wanted to post this earlier.. I’m using my phone now so I can’t change the fanpost until later.

Beane actually made a very good trade for Swisher
Gio Gonzalez is a good young starter who is only going to get better and he also got De Los Santos who is their 17th prospect according to Baseball America. But I’m sure glad he sucked that one year in Chicago.

Anyone remember the last year Bernie played?
Gammons swore that whole trade deadline that the Yankees were going to deal for Swisher to play center field. I was disappointed it did not happen but was relieved the following couple of years as he struggled. I honestly felt he was a platoon player who saw his 10 minutes when he came over but quickly changed my mind the first month last season as he carried the team, you could tell he was glad to be around some goofs like himself and away from Ozzie bad burrito Guillen. I love having unique personalities to watch everynight instead of drab whinning superstars with no heart.

Oh and the reason it was so lopsided
Was because of the potential of Jeffrey Marquez (I believe that’s his name) and because the White Sox were dying to get rid of Swisher. As crazy as it sounds, I’m not sure they mind the rip off. They got Marquez, who is currently on the White Sox roster, Betemit, who was likely a throw in, and Jhonny Nunez, who is on the Sox’ 40 man and made his MLB debut last year against the Yankees. Marquez or Nunez could end up being a solid reliever for all we know. Marquez is a projected back of the rotation starter, but they switched him to pen when they called him up.
Sorry for the rant, but the Yankees didn’t trade Betemit for Swisher. That’s a very bad misconception. It was a very lopsided trade, yes, but the White Sox got two possible MLB relievers (too early to tell if they’ll stick) and who knows if they could have gotten more from another team. I’m sure they don’t mind the trade, they were desperate to get rid of him. He had his worst year there because he didn’t like the people around him and they didn’t like him.

So what you're saying is essentially that Marquez and Nunez are being carried by the White Sox in the hope that they will eventually make this trade look less awful than it really was.
by designatedquitter on Jul 28, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions
What I'm saying is the deal was lopsided
but considering what the White Sox were thinking at the time and the fact that this was probably the best deal they can get and they were NOT going to keep him going into last season, they shouldn’t regret the trade

OK, that's a fair point. I didn't think about the trade market for Swisher at the time, although based on what we now know, he would have helped a lot of teams for not much outlay.

I could not agree more
with this article. Swish is intense but loose. He has a great attitude. He thinks positive and has fun. Has anyone seen his numbers with RISP. They are outlandishly good!!! That has been perhaps the beiggest difference from last year. Last year he got runs in without really being clutch. This year he is clutch.
I voted for Granderson's 1-2 step, though all 3 outfielders have good ones
The infielders don’t have time to do anything cool, worse than botching a play if they’re not paying attention they could get hit in the head and be severely hurt.
