I'd rather it not be a walkoff grandslam

A. I don’t want Arod hitting grandslams.
B. I’d rather see him hit it in the 8th, then someone hits a walkoff in the 9th, so they can celebrate the two separately

One of those people that respect history and would rather have the greatest person to play the game own a record than someone assisted? I’m fine with him breaking other records, just not Gehrig’s

Where do you draw the line, though?

I hate to use a canned argument, but in terms of the “legitimacy” of any records, the game is completely different today. Gehrig’s numbers wouldn’t translate anyway, regardless of steroids. So then the argument becomes about why certain substances are against the rules (and whether or not they even were). But the fact of the matter is, 1. they both benefited from playing in the eras in which they played. 2. He probably would be breaking most of these records anyway.

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Explain how Gehrig benefited from his era

and even if it’s true that Rodriguez would have done it anyway (which probably is true) he used the substances and you can’t change that

Players simply weren't as athletic back then

Not to take anything away from Lou’s greatness, but the entire process of training to be a professional athlete was different back then, and the physical feats that players performed on the field weren’t as taxing on the body. Now, A-Rod didn’t even break any league rules and got crucified during a witch hunt, how does that take away from his records? Should we toss Mantle out with the trash because he was an alcoholic (probably didn’t help his game but might have help his mental state – heh) or quite possibly took amphetamines? What about Reggie in the 70s? Everyone was hopped up back then, should we just forget about an entire era of baseball?

Baseball, today, is what it is, like it or hate, you can’t just ignore entire sets of numbers on a whim is you profess to be about the continuing history of the game. /rant

Also he never had to...

by Andrew GM on Jul 24, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

First of all, were you around back then to see what training methods the players were using? Sure the technology is different now, but you can’t be sure they didn’t train as hard. I understand your argument and I understand that I’m being unreasonable for lack of a better word in this particular situation, but that’s just me.

I grew up with Lou Gehrig being my role model and he wasn’t even alive obviously. My parents tried to get me to use a role model that was alive and I remember simply telling them that they should want me to be like Lou. Ivy leaguer, gave everything he had every day and more, etc.

It’s partially the fact that I respect Lou so much and it’s also that I don’t necessarily respect Arod as a person. As a player I can’t argue he deserves to break it. As a person I will never stop arguing he doesn’t deserve it

as far as that goes it's understandable of course

Lou Gehrig was a great player and a great man. I guess I just don’t see losing a record to A-Rod as taking anything away from him

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It's one of the few records he has left

When Cal broke the games record I supported him because I figured Lou would probably cheer him on. I don’t necessarily think Gehrig would be proud of Rodriguez, but that’s just my guess

I think Lou would be proud of the person he's become

since the fiasco with his contract, and the process by which he’s gotten to that point. He really grew up the past few years; I think it reflects more on the Yankees and New York, and the effect this place has on people, and I think that’s what he’d be proud of

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Sign Cliff Lee to replace Vazquez (we’re probably not getting Haren, which is good).

And let Granderson have a bounce back season. This isn’t Nick Johnson we’re talking about. The chances of him having a long DL stint (if any actually, he has a good injury history) to throw off his season twice in a row are slim.

Crawford starts in LF. Grandy traded.

Crawford struggles under the pressure of big contract and Grandy rebounds from a bad year and hits .300, 30 HR…in another uniform…

Hasn't got hot yet, will happen soon.

Actually he’s getting hot now. Another multi hit game.

Granderson could hit .230 with 15 HR and Cash would still keep him. This is why he’s GM and none of us are. He doesn’t make a rash decision after 1 year.

I’m providing evidence that he’s heating up.

Yes his OPS line has been falling. There are all things that Cashman has looked at. If he hadn’t been injured earlier in the season he’s stats likely wouldn’t have been this bad.

Whatever, we’ll see at the end of the season. Whether he’ll end at .100 or .400 remains to be seen.

To Brandon C

If power/steroids is the only factor in hitting home runs, why isn’t everyone shooting up and being an all star major leaguer?

How does the steroids help him hit them in such great situations that put him near Lou’s grand slam record?

And even through all this you won’t be satisfied (because most people who do the whole steroid tainting argument hate silly things like logic), will you be satisfied when he passes it by 4 grand slams? He only hit 3 as a Ranger.

I did press reply

But then realized I didn’t wanna keep scrolling back up to do that and then come back and keep up with the game thread. Your argument covers nothing relating to the fact that steroids don’t make a guy see the ball better and it doesn’t make a clutch hitter.

by Branta on Jul 24, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It's actually really not an argument

It’s an opinion. As I said up there I don’t care about whether or not he hit them on steroids or not. I care about whether or not he truly deserves such things as a person.

So you say mine is really not an argument

And then come back with really not a reason. Pete Rose lied about betting on baseball for like 30 years. Ty Cobb was a total asshole. Pete still has more hits than any other player, and Ty Cobb still has the highest career batting average. A-Rod deserves it just as much as anyone else.

by Branta on Jul 24, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No

I said what I said wasn’t an argument it was an opinion. If you want to start an argument about this, start it with someone else. No one will change the way I think and unless the Yankees need the grand slam in order to win the game I don’t want him hitting it. Triple with run on error? Sure. Just would rather not see him break it. It’s inevitable (probably spelled wrong, my apologies) but we will see. You can file it as a win of an argument for you if you’d like, but this is just the way I think about it and no one can change that.

eh the point is I couldn't do a better job. No one can do a better job

It’s physically impossible to make a call on a play that close without benefit of a replay.

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I am the only one who thinks that this umpiring problem IS serious?

whether or not it’s the technology allowing us to see plays more clearly, or just a bad year for umpires in general, how many games have been cheapened by bad calls this season? How many chances at history were we, as fans, deprived by this pathetic display. I’m beginning to become convinced that the ability for a human being to discern safe or out on a play that close has always been completely fictional. How are we supposed to have “the human element” if making those calls accurately is humanly impossible? That’s just the “I’m going to guess so I don’t look like a complete moron” element.

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

it is.

it sucks around the league. Its almost as if they’re subconsciously trying to blow calls to get the league to implement more technology.

Tho…its definitely possible that it was this bad in the past.

Or maybe…wasn’t there an umpire strike not too long ago?

well the cat has two choices, out or safe

and will choose one randomly, because, well, it’s a cat. Meanwhile, the umpires also have two choices, and will also choose one randomly, because they obviously can’t tell who’s safe and out by actually looking at the play

by jeeptheheap on Jul 24, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What's kind of odd is the player's reaction to the umpiring problem

I think like only 20% of players said they would add more instant replay? Kind of surprising to me, but a statement that seems to say that replay won’t be extended further any time soon…

well...

he was actually All-Pro caliber just last season, just blew out his knee.

Kinda old, but if he’s even 80%, he’s better then 80% of the NFL LB’s. Surprising signing to say the least, given Reese’s MO.
