Dunn or LaRoche in Pinstripes?
Browsing around the internet while at work (hey, I'm employed to do BS work anyway), I came across a rumor about Adam Dunn. Apparently, he would like to work out a long-term deal with the Washington Nationals some time before the trade deadline. At this point, that's not an awful idea considering the Nats seem to be a .500 team this year and have a tremendous amount of promise in the next 3 years or so. However, if Dunn and the Nationals can't work out a deal, he will most likely be traded.
This is interesting for two reasons:
1) Adam Dunn is making $12 million this year and I wonder how much the Nationals are willing to give him on a multi-year deal.
2) Dunn is actually among the elite players in MLB right now. Dunn is tied for 13th in MLB in wOBA at .396 and he is 7th in SLG% at .565. He can most definitely crush the ball still and has proven to be very productive for the Nationals this year.
Do I see this as a viable option for the Yankees? Not really. I would imagine Washington would take most of the bill on Dunn's contract. He would most likely DH because he's an atrocious 1st baseman and we have this guy named Mark Teixeira. I don't like how he is 2nd in the league in K% at 34.8%, either. However, if the Yankees really wanted to go after an extra bat... I suppose he isn't a bad option. God knows what we'd have to give up to get him.
Adam LaRoche interests me a bit. He's not an all-star caliber player, but that's not what the Yankees are exactly looking for. He's on Arizona, and I imagine they will look to trade away the rest of their team. I can see LaRoche as a bench player that can give Teixeira a break at 1st if necessary. I don't think it would cost the Yankees very much to get him. He's a solid hitter despite the fact that he's 11th in the league in K% (29.2). He is a better option than Colin Curtis or Ramiro Pena off the bench and he's only earning $4.5 million this year. wOBA of .335 is decent for a player that will primarily be playing off the bench. He could be our Eric Hinske of 2010!
This is pure speculation that I literally just made up. This all might sound stupid (Dunn probably) but I figured it would be worth mentioning for conversation sake.

Unless ...
Dunn or LaRoche can provide a strong 8th inning bridge to Mo’, or provide some quality starting pitching depth, I don’t want them. We are 1st or 2nd in runs scored right now and hold the best record in the game. Hitting and defense isn’t our problem. That’s why I believe Cashman is burning up the phones looking for some quality arms over mediocre bats.

I agree that pitching is MUCH more important right now
However, the Yankees really have nothing off the bench except for Marcus Thames… and that’s not exactly a formidable hitter. We already discussed pitching last week and who we all would like to see… so I decided there might be a few hitters worth mentioning.

um... we have Colin Curtis
He has shown that he can come off the Bench and give a good At Bat… I know he is unproven and young… but the Bullpen is much more glaring. IMO
Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
Again, not exactly formidable.. I guess we'll see how he plays over the rest of the season?

Do we really need a Formidable Pinch Hitter...
I mean, John Vander Wal is not exactly Formidable, but a guy like that does the Job. Not everyone can Pinch Hit… I See your point. I mean, if game is in the balance… you wanna see “_______ ______” instead of Thames
Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
Perhaps I'm misusing the word "formidable"
I just don’t see Colin Curtis coming up in a big spot off the bench and delivering, that’s all. Well, other than two days ago.

He was clutch Sunday night against the Dodgers...
but, yeah, Twice is no “guarentee” I just thought those AT-Bats were Solid, he looked comfortable, like he had a plan.

Yeah that was what came to my mind when typing the last comment
His AB against the Dodgers. I like the kid so it’ll be cool to see him get a shot. But yeah pitching is a bigger necessity. I just wanted to open discussion on hitters.

Remember when Vander Wal was on the team in '02?
How did that work out?
Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?
Failed Expectations?
I guess I associate “pinch hitter” with his name.

Dont see a need for either of these guys. If we’re going to use some prospects, go get a bullpen arm. the idea of needing ‘pop’ off the bench is somewhat silly. we have a ridiculous offensive lineup, and if it comes down too having some power to pinch hit miranda or, later on, montero, will do just fine down the stretch to me. i have always had the mindset that speed and defense are more important to the yankees off the bench because of the power we possess in the lineup already.
Dunn has stated in the pas tthat he does not want to be a DH.
Plus, is Laroche that much better than a Thames/ Miranda DH platoon? Not reallly. Unless we can get him for an Eric Wordkemper or someone else inconsequential I’m not doing it.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
I think Miranda is pretty bad
LaRoche is definitely better than him there’s no question about that. I’m willing to bet they don’t pull the trigger for either but who knows?

Miranda has had 60 plate appearances this year scattered over a couple months.
Not exactly conclusion draw-able. LaRoche might be better, but not so much better that we should even consider giving up anything of worth.

I see your point
No one said the Yanks would give up a tremendous amount of prospects for a guy like LaRoche, though.

Don't see the need for either
but out of these 2, Dunn…as he can play OF. Laroche may be cheaper tho, but both aren’t gonna be Jerry Hairston cheap like last year.
When the roster’s expand (and the AAA season ends?) Montero should be given a cup of coffee for the DH spot.
If anything, a pen arm which neither of these 2 are. Even a pen arm is debatable cuz of the combustible nature of the position + NY generally = fail.
Go New York Go!

Possibly
I don’t know why they’d be going in for another one after Lee, though.

My Guess is...
that because they wanna Cap Innings for Hughes… they replace Hughes in the Rotation with Starter…and make Phranchise the pitcher he was last year for us.
I think with Pettite injury, this may cause Yankees to Act. I mean, the options out there regarding Bullpen Arms… is there a better option then Hughes out there.
Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
I can see them pulling the trigger on Haren
Will he dominate the AL? He was good with Oakland but has been in the desert a couple years now.
Starters have been terrible of late.. the last good start came before the ASG.

Haren for Joba…. Straight up… um, why you laughing, I am serious.

Joba in the NL West, of all places, would be fine with me.
That is, IF they decided to trade him.

just don't understand why they insist on an ace for the back of the rotation.
Haren’s very good so he’ll probably cost Montero + others…especially since he’s locked up for a few years (tho that’s not a bad thing if you have him).
Carlos Silva could be a good pickup, and ain’t really gonna cost a ton given his contract. That’s a 3/4 starter….the hell do we need Haren for?

its the same argument.

As long as Montero isn't traded
I’m ok with the Yankees picking up a starting pitcher. You can NEVER have enough starters. I just really want to see Montero get an opportunity in pinstripes.

agreed... I am guessing they will want one of our catchers.
Montero or Rome
Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
Ugh they better not get Haren
What’s the point? Why must there be in an ace in the back of the rotation? Yes, you can “never have enough pitching,” but when starting pitching is not a pressing need, you shouldn’t try to trade the farm for it. Haren ain’t gonna be cheap.
Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?
I'm beginning to disagree with starting pitching not being a necessity
I know the pitchers need to get back into a groove after the ASB .. but Burnett has been, for the most part, terrible since the beginning of JUNE. I am not worried about Sabathia at all. What happens to Hughes when he reaches the innings cap? Vazquez is inconsistent, but has the ability to be very good. Pettitte is hurt… hopefully he doesn’t reinjure himself when he comes back. What started as a strength has not appeared that way in a while.

I dont disagree with your assessment. But cannot help but feel, I might be panic’ing… I mean… we have 7 game lead on last postseason Spot.

Understood it's a 7 game lead
However, I don’t think you can ever count out the Red Sox. Especially because they’re playing hurt.

dammit Yankees don't you learn nothing let's KEEP MONTERO
"We're only going to score 17 points?" - Tom Brady
"Well played, Mauer." - Guy from PS3 commercials
not again
I can’t wait till we’re passed the deadline. They don’t need another ace. They have one. One particularly great, fat, cheeseburger loving ace. They don’t need Haren.
Montero is preying to his god given father right now that he isn’t traded.
"I'm looking at 600 as first base. I want to run right through it and use it as a platform and a spring board for more to come"- Alex Rodriguez
Don't need either of them.
Neither would likely accept a bench role and neither should be in the lineup- the open DH position is necessary with this bunch.
Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?
If we wanted players who strike out a lot, we could have just kept Austin Jackson.
It’s tough to justify dealing away talent except for help the bullpen, given the fact that there are no other glaring weaknesses.

strikeouts are just outs....so that doesn't make sense to worry about.
Dunn could hit more HR and produce more runs using a whiffle bat then AJAX. That’s what offense is all about, runs. Not batting average…production.
But I agree, Dunn really isn’t necessary, unless they’re acquiring a pen arm as well.
Go New York Go!

Big Price
Both of those players are likely to cost quite a bit in return. Dunn’s a monster and LaRoche, while he has been having a down year, he’s a league average 1B. His option next year is also worth picking up for a team that would play him in that position. It all means that the Yankees are unlikely trade for either player when they need pitching more.
Solid point, metric
