..Without asking anyone to start on less than four days' rest.., the Yankees might be able to make sure that (Sergio) Mitre just sees the Royals twice, the Jays once or twice, the Indians, and the Mariners .... In other words, if Girardi is careful, his fifth starter would not have to face a single contender, and not even a single above-average offense.

Excellent
"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next." -George Michael Steinbrenner III
That's great but what'll keep the Yankees in first is
beating up on the lousy teams. He still needs to win some.
Good

Someone once told me..
that my biggest weakness was that I often underestimated my opponents. I think the Yankees (and their fans) are guilty of the same thing.
Kansas City leads the MLB in batting average and also has a respectable team OPS. The Jays can put a lot of runs on the board quickly and currently rank 8th in the MLB in OPS. Neither of these two opponents are sure wins.
If the Yankees hit like they should, I think they’ll win these series. However, we’ve seen too many times this season that the Yankees offense can be very impotent.
Just how “good” Kansas City actually is depends on the eye of the beholder.
Yes, they lead the AL in batting average. They also rank 12th in home runs, 13th in walks, and 14th in stolen base success rate.
Put that all together and you’ve got a team that’s, unsurprisingly, 10th in the AL in total runs scored.
ah..runs scored
you stop with your logic. It adds nothing.

I recognize they aren’t an elite team. My point is that they are better offensively than people think they are.
How are they better
The rank 10th out of 14 teams in the only category that really counts – runs?
They’re just as bad as everyone thinks they are.
The key phrase is Joe being careful
But the Yanks cannot let any of the weak sisters escape. Have to put up a lot of runs, and early. Not like last nite. The worst case scenario is having to bring in Park or Gaudin to relieve Mitre. That will mean a guaranteed every 5th game loss. But we have to take 3 of the other four to make up for it.
