I agreed with your observations during the game thread by the way. I would have said something but it seemed like you were having fun and I didn’t want to intrude! ;-)

Nah, its okay

I was totally wrong. Listen to saber guys, they know everything. I have never seen any of them bend even a little bit, I dont expect them to now, lol.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I just wonder why all the useless stats are still being used

I mean saber is where its at, why isnt everything being updated with this stuff?

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Regualr stats are not useless

Sabr just tells us more about the game then conventional stats. It’s does not make other stats useless, it’s just better in sight on how players are preforming besides just AVG. and stuff

by lololol on Jul 20, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

So why not use those stats instead?

Stats like AVG dont tell the story, so why use them? I watch all kinds of games on Extra Innings, and I still havent heard any of these stats used on any broadcast, why not?

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Because a lot of broadcasters aren't up on these kinds of stats?

Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?

by Andrew GM on Jul 20, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not? They are the be all and end all of the game now, right?

These guys are being paid to convey what the game is today, it seems they arent doing that. The game is all about saber now, isnt it?

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they’re talking to a mainstream audience.

So the mainstream audience doesn't deserve to be told the correct stats?

I mean if they knew all about some of these stats, they might feel different about a player. Thanks to saber, I know that Joba is just unlucky, kind of like me that night at the casino playing blackjack. Even though I was down $800, it wasnt that I played bad, I was just unlucky.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and if you double down with eleven, and get an ace, you shouldn’t think about a long term strategy, you should just punch the dealer in the face and blame sabermetrics.

Well that sucked

Not much else to say. 5 questions came from this game to me.

Why couldn’t we hit that scrub?
When will Gaudin and CHOP be DFA’d?
Can Albaladejo keep up what he did today?
Why does Hughes seem to struggle so much at Yankee Stadium?
And what would Cervelli have done in that AB directly after the Girardi ejection?

Anyone have answers to these questions? I’m sure Cervelli would have crushed it so far that they’d count it as a 5 run homer instead of solo, but thats just me.

And seriously, get CHOP and Gaudin off this team and get real relievers.

a walk and 2 hits is better than

giving up actual runs, true. But a walk and 2 hits for a reliever still isn’t good.

by phonty on Jul 20, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

this is true

just one game though. He’s not expected to be a lights out late game reliever. If he becomes that, it’s lightning in a bottle. He’s supposed to be a solid reliever who can come in and get the job done, and not blow the lead so the ability of coming back is gone (CHOP and/or Gaudin).

I actually don’t think he’ll be that bad. I don’t think he’ll be excellent, but he won’t be awful.

And one of those hits should have been caught by Swish in right, so it really should be 1 hit and 1 run.

Thats not really a question I can answer lol

Thats what I’M hoping from Alba. I don’t know what the Yanks want from him. But do you really think they’ll plug him into a big role right away based on excellent stats at AAA? the majors are a whole different animal.

i understand

but I think there’s a reason Girardi was warming him up when it looked like the game was out of hand. I liked the fact that he only gave up 2 hits and a walk in 1.2 innings with one K, but it seemed more like a “let’s just throw him in there to see what he can do against MLB hitters.”

The Yankees are in a bind right now with the bullpen not being reliable, and knowing who to really trust other than Robertson from the other night. My thought was that Alby was the white flag long before Park or Gaudin were brought in. You bring Alby in to pitch when the Yankees have a 5+ run lead if you want to see what he can do, not when you’re still in the middle innings with a 5 run deficit. This is all just my opinion. I’d rather bring Alby in with a big lead to see how he handles the hitters (with some breathing room to make a mistake and recover) than bring him in when we’re down and now he has to be lights out because then the game will be further out of reach.

by phonty on Jul 20, 2010 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he was the white flag

wasn’t it 4-2 when he was brought in?

brought in after Hughes gave up the 2-run homer to Napoli.

by phonty on Jul 20, 2010 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm honestly

surprised they let Hughes pitch past the 4th inning with the number of pitches he was throwing. I think Sterling said he was at 70 pitches with 1 out in the 4th or something like that. The quick 5th inning is the only thing that got him into the 6th.

by phonty on Jul 20, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes just didn't have it

which makes it 4 starters in a row who didn’t have their good stuff.

Having good teams doesn’t make him a good manager.

Personally, I think Joe Torre was one of the worst in game managers I’ve ever seen, and look at how much the Yankees won because they had great talent.

What does a manager do? Manage the bullpen? Call for an occasional hit and run?

All managers get way too much credit for success and way too much blame for failure. They’re effect on any given game is ridiculously small.

no love for Torre?

he’s an NL style manager, which AL teams may not be very fond of. I agree he’s not the best in-game manager. But he’s the best in the league at managing men in the clubhouse, and that can take you a long way as a team. Joe made the 2004, 2005, and 2007 Yankees teams overachieve despite having guys like Sheffield, Pavano, Kevin Brown, Kenny Lofton, and Tony Womack on the team. I think he definitely did something right.

Okay Torre may claim to have been an "NL style manager"

But other than the first half of the 1996 season he wasn’t. His teams routinely hit 200+ homers a year and the sacrifice was more and more unused the longer he managed (not necessarily a bad thing).

Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?

by Andrew GM on Jul 20, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the ARod batting 8th thing was misinterpreted

I really think Torre was trying to take the pressure off of ARod and it backfired. I dont think it was about who was his “guy”.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

How could that possibly take pressure OFF of A-Rod? It’s just a massive show of no confidence that of course the media is going to read into and put a ton more pressure on him.

How could Joe Torre, master of the NY media, not see that one coming?

Questions or thoughts? Email me at duggan2423(at)gmail(dot)com

by Lord Duggan on Jul 20, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that one incident

Is strong enough evidence to say Torre wasn’t that good of an ego manager. A-Rod managed to come back the next year with a monster season and they didn’t hate each other so it obviously wasn’t THAT big of a deal.

Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?

by Andrew GM on Jul 20, 2010 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I always got the impression that Joe had his guys like Jeter, Mo, etc. whom he would run through a wall, and other guys like A-Rod with whom he would deliberately hang out to dry.

Add that to the fact that he couldn’t manage a bullpen to save himself, and would always leave guys in way too long, and I really wasn’t sorry that we moved on from Torre. But, as I’ve stated above, it’s not like this team is really that much different with Girardi.

by Lord Duggan on Jul 20, 2010 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was time to move on too

I thought 04 should have been the end of Torre. I dont think the Yanks handled it right, but they did Joe a favor, he left with his rep intact even though his managing is what cost the team from 01 on.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You think he did it to mess with ARod?

You never know, maybe Alex asked to be moved down.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

OK I see what you mean

my point was, he constantly got teams that had no business in the postseason and managed to get them there. He got players to overachieve and mange to win (in the regular season anyway). The manager isn’t as important in baseball like it is in football or basketball but he can still help you or hurt you, and with 12 straight playoff appearances I think Torre did something right.

I do think Torre was good for the team.

They needed someone who could handle the media (and the Boss) as smoothly as he did and manage all those egos. Torre excelled at that. Bullpen management, not so much, especially in the later years. Poor Proctor/Gordon/Sturtze/Quantrill/etc

Did you know Joe Morgan thinks Cano will win a batting title one day?

by Andrew GM on Jul 20, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Quantrill and Gordon wasn't bad either

those two and Mo were Torre’s 7-8-9 combo and it worked most of the year. He just overused it so much that it fell apart in the postseason.

If there’s one area Girardi is better than Torre in it’s managing the pen.

I was never a Torre guy but...

If he wasnt important, why did they miss the playoffs in 08, while he took the Dodgers to the playoffs? If Easier division is your answer, thats weak.

by YankeesJets on Jul 20, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

Torre has his own playoff streak still in tact- 14 consecutive years I think. Thats impressive.

I do think it’s possible the Yanks make the playoffs in 2008 with Torre. We’ll never know though. And i can hardly complain about Joey G after a WS Championship.

I think the players liked playing for Torre

I think Torre wasnt the same once he started losing coaches though. Stott and Zim meant a lot to him. I really hated when they picked Torre as manager but we cant complain with what they did on his watch. Guy is going to the Hall.

thats almost 100 games against crap. Granted, for some reason one of the above decides to do something every year..but still.

4/5 division foes that the Cards have to face….stink on any given year.

Well, like I said, it wasn’t me that axed him. I mean, he didn’t really contribute anything to the conversation, which tended to drag some threads down, but I didn’t really have too much of a problem with (I, like you, laughed at a bunch of his posts).

To me, he was clearly doing it to see how long he'd last.

He had nothing positive to post at all and all he did was constantly bash players no matter what. I see that as being trollish, and being more worthy of being banned than profanity.

by david d on Jul 21, 2010 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions

as I said above

I admit, he’s been awful as a whole. But I’m still saying that he’ll be worth it in the end.

done?

I didn’t say he’s “done”, but Montero would be the centerpiece, kind of like the Melky deal where Vizcaino was the real part of the deal

by david d on Jul 21, 2010 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I honestly doubt the Yankees trade him

If he has a bad year this time around they’ll probably give him another shot.

If they can shift Gardner to CF

And they can go upgrade to Werth or Crawford, why wouldnt they? If you take away NJ’s money coming off and Grandys money from next year, it makes sense.

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it all depends on Pettitte

If he is retiring, which I hope he doesnt, they will go get Lee with his money. If he stays, they could bring back Javy and keep the staff as is, which isnt bad.

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Grandy is with the team like whether you like it or not

suck it up and grow up. I’m starting to get annoyed and losing patience. Everyone here has tried to explain nicely why Grandy won;t be this bad forever and yet you can;t seem to get it through your head. I’m sorry but sometimes your stubbornness is irritating

by lololol on Jul 21, 2010 4:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Yours is even worse

Defending a guy who has stunk. It isnt May anymore, August is right around the block and you are using saber to try and defend a guy who is almost always an automatic out. You need to grow up.

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be so sure

If they want to go after Werth or another good OF’er this off season, they could put Gardy in Center and pick up a decent pitcher for the deal I mentioned above

by david d on Jul 21, 2010 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Look, I'm just treating this like Tex's slow start (before he finally got it together)

The numbers are awful. Check.
Has looked completely lost while at-bat. Check.
Has shown a couple hot streaks but are short lived followed by long slumps. Check.

I’m just saying he’ll snap out of it. I’m not saying he’s been good, he’s been awful, I’m just saying I doubt it ends this way.

I'm not so sure

I actually like Grandy, always have, but I think we’re going to get what we’ve gotten thus far. Sad.

by david d on Jul 21, 2010 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Grandy is not Tex

As much as I would love for Grandy to heat up, I’m not expecting much. He is not that kind of player, he cant hit lefties and K’s way too much. He doesnt even have the pressure of the 3 hole that Tex has.

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions

you're right, he is not Tex, I have no reason to believe that he'll snap out of it, I just think that he will

Who cares, he’s gonna be our starting CF for this year at least, none of us have any say in this, well just see where it ends up.

To be honest,

Jeter’s my biggest concern right now. He’s been slumping badly for quite a while now. We all know, as Jeter goes, so go the Yanks.

by david d on Jul 21, 2010 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt it, if he has a bad year we can still win it all.

I doubt he finishes this badly, but it doesn’t sink the team.

I am beginning to worry a bit as well, I’m afraid.

Maybe Jeter is having contract concerns, lol

I dunno how they are going to give him another 4 years at a 100 million. He isnt going to remain this bad but he is not worth 25 Million a year. At least I dont think Jeter would keep playing if his skills eroded.

I doubt Jeter demands nearly that much.

I dont, and he shouldnt. He can get 2 years 40 for sure from the Yanks.

it's 4 am and i'm i can't sleep so i just checked in on the thread but jesus this thread is just full of Grandy bashing

blah blah he;s not hitting jesus christ get over it. He is not a .230 hitter. Why is everyone on his f——ing case. Seriously we’ve gone over why he;s not going to hit .230 forever about every time the Yankees lose. There are posts written about it a million time. Yet people can;t accept the idea that he can and will improve, like they can;t accept the fact Ajax will regress and saying that isn;t bashing Ajax…just telling the truth.Grandy always seems to be thrown under a bus when the team loses cuz he’s the only reason we lose right? Also i hate the fact people hate stuff that are new and claiming it’s invalidity because its new. Since new stuff is scary to learn and we rather keep believing the old facts like the world is flat. I’m seriously going to lose it if i see another Grandy post b/c the guy is with the team for long no matter what, SO LIVE WITH IT. Jeter has been BAD (yes i’ll admit it) this year but we give him all the benefit of the doubt while the new guy gets none.

by lololol on Jul 21, 2010 4:49 AM EDT reply actions

You are turning this around making it about AJax

I never once said we needed to keep AJax. I do find it funny that everything the saber guys keep saying about AJax being lucky and Grandy being unlucky, they keep on proving that you guys are wrong so far. Saying Grandy should have the same benefits as Jeter makes you look like a tool. What the heck has Grandy ever done for the Yanks? I root for the guy and hope he proves me wrong. I went through these same arguments with the saber crew when NJ was signed, guess you guys aren’t going to admit that was a mistake too? Ha, Matsui has more HRs than Grandy this year…..at Yankee Stadium, sad.

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

can't beleive you're still on this after a win

we say Ajax will regress and he has …it;s not making about ajax to compare the guys since they are having opposite seasons and just happened to be traded for each other. And we say Grandy will get better because he has the talent to. (with the numbers to back it up). Ppl said NJ will have a great OBP. which he has and if he had not gotten hurt..who knows? Saber didn’t say he will stay healthy since that impossible to tell. i’m annoyed because we address the grandy issue basically every time the team loses or the guy has a bad game. we get it he’s not hitting but its not fair to single him out in a loss. I’m just saying chill a bit and just let him play it out for the rest of the season and don’t get all riled up after one game. It’s almost like YI bashing tex after every game he doesn’t hit. Even the fact you say you support him but then throw him under a bus and say to get rid of him at the same time is contradicting. Look i don’t want to argue but give the guy a chance to turn it around. Remember in 2008 Cano hit .217 thru june (same amount of Ab as grandy so far) and he got hot towards the end and Grandy can do the same. We can throw him under the bus after he fails to hit the walk off hr in game 7 of the postseason (i’m kidding obviously)

by lololol on Jul 21, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I just got on and saw your response

It’s not that I am “still on this”, all I ask is for someone to admit that regardless of what saber thinks will happen, that Grandy has been a disappointment. I haven’t bashed anybody but NJ this year. Not Joba, not Javy, not even Grandy. I dont consider speaking the truth about Grandy, to be bashing. Just admit he hasn’t been great, that is all I’m looking for. You would be stunned if Grandy was traded away in the offseason?

by YankeesJets on Jul 21, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

has he been a dissapointment so far? yes

but things are pointing to him improving later on. i would be stunned if we traded him because we gave prospects for him and well he still has a great upside. Also i hope we can but this behind us and continue to root for Grandy and the rest of the Yanks!

by lololol on Jul 21, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course, I'm not trying to fight with fellow Yankees fans

I hope he heats up like Tex has in July because we could sure use him. Personally I hope he is saving his best for the playoffs, lol
