New York Yankees 8, Seattle Mariners 2: A Fitting End To The First Half Of The Season

I'm going to miss this. This one's for you, Bob.

The Yankees defeated the Mariners 8-2 today, thanks to sloppy play by Seattle, solid hitting by New York, and another outstanding performance by CC Sabathia.

In Sabathia's last 8 starts he is 8-0 with a 1.81 ERA. Sure, he continues to get much better run support than Javier Vazquez, but he also has been pitching very well. Sabathia went seven innings, giving up six hits and one earned run.

The Yankees scored twice in the first on a Robinson Cano sac fly and a Jorge Posada two-run single. In the 3rd, Mark Teixeira scored on a wild pitch. In the 4th, Derek Jeter hit a two-run double and Mark Teixeira added an RBI double. In the 5th, Marcus Thames hit his 3rd home-run of the season, a two-run shot.

The Yankees finish the first half of the season at 56-32, the best record in the MLB.

Play of the Game: Jorge Posada's two run single.

Comment of the Game: Jedi Master A-Rod's photo

Nice to see the Yankees get the victory on the day that one of the greatest Yankees names passed away. For those of you that haven't heard yet, Derek Jeter will use Bob Sheppard's recording of his introduction for his All-Star Game at bats. R.I.P. Bob Sheppard.

What a shame.

I was hoping to see Joba pitch….

2004: Hideo Nomo – ERA: 8.25
2010: Joba Chamberlain – ERA: 5.79

When asked by reporters what he most liked about being a MLB ballplayer, Joba replied: ‘The great selection of cold cuts after I blow another lead.’

I don't know

But Old Hoss Radbourn’s ERA in 1884 was 1.38. His Twitter account is also way funnier than Joba’s, so that’s two for Old Hoss, none for Joba.

it will all really depend on 3 things
  • The Yankee’s offense and bullpen improving to be more consistent (consistently good for offense, and just improve to consistently good for bullpen excluding Mo). Really, it’s crazy that the Yankee’s offense has pretty much underachieved in the 1st half and they’re still the team with the best record in MLB.
  • Boston getting their injured players back and playing as well as they were before injury.
  • The Rays remaining consistent and maybe getting a bit better after the break, if it’s even possible.

One race I’m interested to watch is the NL West just to see if the Padres wind up being like the Rays last year, where they ride the young arms into the ground and the rotation is too worn out to keep up the good pitching in the 2nd half.

by phonty on Jul 11, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree
For the Red Sox, they do get their players back. Its only that they dont fall behind too far before that

yeah

getting them back and them playing at 100% is critical if they want to be contenders in the 2nd half. If they get them all back and they’re worse, or in some cases as bad, it’ll be a tough summer for the Red Sox and their fans.

By as bad, I mainly mean Beckett, because he wasn’t pitching that well leading up to his back injury, was he?

by phonty on Jul 11, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

No, he was bad. But hopefuly he can improve.
Getting back VMart and Pedroia is vital. Now it appears they dodger another bullet today with Beltre.
