Quick poll: Hughes & Joba for Strasburg?

Would you deal Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain for Stephen Strasburg right now? FYI, Strasburg debuted last night: 7 ip, 4 h, 2 er, 14 k, 0 bb (albeit against the Pirates).

Disclaimer: this poll is meant to generate discussion. If you don't like the 'deal' part of the question, just imagine it as: Would you rather have X & Y, or Z?

There's absolutely no way that the nats would make this trade

Strasburg is going to be a perennial cy young contender. Hughes and Joba will be number 3s (if everything breaks right)

phil hughes

and his sub 3 era would probably say he’s better than a number 3. he’s 23 years old, room to grow. borderline ace in his prime

Joba..maybe is a number three

or just a reliever. He hasn’t shown it yet.

Hughes? On the Yankees, yea..he’s a 2 or a 3. But that’s cuz they have CC Sabathia for the next 6 years.

This is in no way a knock on either Hughes or joba

Strasburg has arguably the best stuff in the majors right now, and looks like the second coming of Randy Johnson. No two players (barring perhaps Hanley and another blue chipper with a great contract) would be tradeable for him. Strasburg is a real face of a franchise, and he’s done nothing to suggest he doesn’t deserve the hype and more

Nah, I wouldn't.

Mainly because despite this being a business, I think it’s good for the Nats fans to have a fantastic pitcher they can rally around. Someone who will sell out the stadium and sell jerseys.

It was great for DC last night — and the way he pitched, he may very well bring crowds like that to every game he pitches in, wherever he pitches — okay, maybe not Florida LOL.

The kid looks awesome

but I wouldn’t make any trade yet. Not that there is even a remote possibility of this ever happening……..ever. Or ever being discussed, besides on this site……….ever. It kind of makes you wonder why anyone would even suggest it. How about trading Texeira and a couple of prospects for Pujols while we’re at it? I am being sarcastic. Although some people that read this would think the Cardinals could be talked into making that deal.

Sweet Baby Jesus No

Strasburg seems like the real deal butttttt, last time I checked Phil Hughes is no slouch either. It’s not as if Phil is an old man compared to Strasburg, I really don’t see a gain in this deal. And well of course there’s Joba, who lord knows can be lights out, plus again I do love the homegrown talent.

There is no way the Nationals will make that trade

Hughes is super but does not have the upside of Strasburg. Joba is a riddle wrapped in an engima and his trade value is questionable. Neither have the gate, licensing or media power of Strasburg. Ask yourself: Would you trade Hughes for Shawn Marcum (5-2, 2.77) and Kevin Gregg (0-2, 14 saves, 4.32)?

by SparkySaves on Jun 9, 2010 8:09 AM EDT reply actions

+1. Good analogy. This poll should say would you trade Strasburg for Joba/Hugues then everyone would agree — Trade Strasburg???? Are you nuts?

by Fakey McFake on Jun 9, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

not really a good analogy

Gregg is a 32-yo mediocre reliever. he is what he is at this point. Joba is a 24-yo ultra-promising reliever/starter. Joba has a helluva lot more trade value than Gregg.

Marcum is 28 and missed all of last year with an injury. Hughes is 24 and has a significantly better ‘pedigree’ than Marcum.

just bc they have similar ERAs this season doesn’t mean they have the same trade value.

by Travis G on Jun 9, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Joba...OK

Hughes, no. Strasburg can have all the hype he wants. He hasn’t even done what Hughes has done yet.

Strasburg did what no rookie has done, and really rarely any pitcher in the history of baseball has done against a MLB team, he was so good yesterday.

He’s got great stuff. But I stay with Hughes.

In fantasy world

If you offered me Strasburg for Joba and Hughes straight up I would be crazy not to take that deal. I love Hughes, but he is just a damn good pitcher. In all my years of watching baseball I have never seen anyone pitch like that kid Strasburg. Of course after the trade Hughes would win the NL Cy Young and Strasburg would throw his arm out in his first game against the Orioles for me and need TJ surgery.

maybe..

I mean, Straburg’s potential seems more then Hughes and Joba put together. The kid’s stuff is ridiculous.

His next start I think lines up in Detroit. Lets see how he does there.

The Pirates are a major league team (anyone who says its “against the Pirates”..well, no one else did what Strasburg did against the Pirates) , but they do stink. Lets see what he can do against Miguel Cabrera.

Cuz Hughes did pretty damn good against Miguel Cabrera.

Consensus is Right: The Question is Moot

The Nats will never offer that trade, for both business and baseball reasons. On the business side, after finally providing the electric moment the franchise has so desperately needed, trading Strasburg for anybody, including Ulbaldo Jiminez, is just not an option. The fans would march on the stadium with torches and pitchforks.

On the baseball side, Hughes has achieved more than Strasburg at this point, but Strasburg has more upside. Until he shows that he can consistently get people out, Joba adds virtually nothing to the trade mix. I was at the game last night, and Strasburg’s stuff is filthy. All pitchers are an injury risk, of course, but it was the most impressive start I’ve ever witnessed in person, even better than watching John Candelaria whiff 14 A’s at the Stadium in 1988 during the “Bash Brothers” era .

I’ve been to the Stadium during the playoffs, I went to Games 1 & 2 of the ALCS in 1998. Nats park was as electric last night as anything I’ve ever experienced. Perfect night for baseball, great experience, and the game was over in a thoroughly manageable 2:20. And if Karstens hadn’t spent so much time futzing around on the mound and throwing to first, it might have been under 2:00!

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

The Question is

Whether YOU would make the the trade, not the Nationals. Because everyone knows the Nationals might punch the Yankees in the face if they were offered such a deal.

by BigDanz2000 on Jun 9, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

Although as a Nats fan and a Yankee fan I can’t really lose. The Nats have made a habit of picking up Yankee pitchers; Clippard worked out great for them, Bruney not so much. I can’t believe the Yankees traded Tyler Clippard for Jonathan Albaladejo – Peaches was decent last year and has been lights out for the Nats so far this year.

I have no problem with neither side wanting to make this trade; this would be an offseason rather than in-season move anyway. Because all three pitchers would be taken out of their comfort zone, it could well be a lose-lose sort of deal if done now.

Not so fast...

There is absolutely no questioning his start last night. He was phenomenal in every sense of the word. No one expected him to strikeout 14 batters.

To all those that say “Yeah, but it was the Pirates…”, so…? Who else has struckout the Pirates 14 times this season? … Anyone? Anyone? Nope, nobody else has. In fact, the only pitcher in the last 7 years to have struck out more Pirate hitters in a single game is Tim Lincecum (yes, that guy that has won 2 straight cy young awards) and he struckout 15.

He electrified the franchise as well as fans in general around baseball. I was ecstatic for the Washington franchise when I heard how well he had pitched and I’m a diehard Yankee fan. If he lives up to the hype, he will be a valuable commodity to the game.

HOWEVER…

It is only one start. He has a lot to work on and prove to us in the next 5 years. In no way am I taking away from his BRILLIANT performance. I’m simply trying to keep in perspective that he has only thrown 7 innings of baseball.

Joba went his first 38 or so innings without allowing an earned run in 2007.. a couple years later his ERA is well over 5 as a relief pitcher. Things happen when hitters become familiar with pitchers… it’s anyone’s guess what will happen with Strasburg.

One thing is absolutely for certain, he saved the Washington franchise yesterday from serious financial troubles.

Home is in Section 201 Row 24.

Serious Financial Troubles?

Not so much. According to Forbes Magazine, the Nats had the #3 cashflow in the majors last year. With a low payroll, revenue sharing, the MLB network contract and a decent local TV deal they’re doing rather well overall. The owner is also one of the wealthiest in MLB, so the team isn’t really in financial trouble at all.

But.

He is a major shot in the arm of fan interest and enthusiasm, and the team’s long term success needed that in a baseball sense. This helps push them towards fielding a real competitive team (especially in the NL) instead of being one of the bottom-feeding franchises that just cashes the checks every year.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldnt make the trade

Joba still is only 24, I dont think he has reached his potential and Hughes is beginning to reach his. Strasburg looked awesome but it was against a team that has one solid player, his next start is against another team with very little talent too. Like Bill Parcells once said about a crappy Dallas QB, put away the anointing oil, it was one start.

by YankeesJets on Jun 9, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not the one start

It’s the stuff combined with the control that he’s exhibited all year that have convince me that he’s the real deal.

IF he stays healthy.

Of course, with pitching there’s no guarantee that ANYONE stays healthy. Hughes (hamstring, oblique, rib) and Joba (shoulder) have more ML time AND more injury history).

As I said elsewhere in the thread, making this trade could actually be a lose-lose for both clubs.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He did look awesome out there but...

The Yankees weren’t ready to give up Hughes and Joba for Halladay or Santana, who are both on their way to the hall of fame, cant see why they would for a largely unproven kid. On top of that if Joba and Hughes were both healthy and in the rotation they will give a team more than Strasburg alone can.

by YankeesJets on Jun 9, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

LOTS of reasons ...

Halladay and Santana required megabucks contracts, Strasburg will be under team control for several years. The production of Hughes and Joba comes much cheaper than that of Halladay or Santana, but that’s not true of Strasburg, whose initial contract of $15 million was less than H&S make in a single season, AND much of it is already spent in the form of a signing bonus.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

On top of that if Joba and Hughes were both healthy and in the rotation they will give a team more than Strasburg alone can.

I would love to see Hughes and Joba both healthy and effective in the rotation, but Joba hasn’t given me a lot to be optimistic about in that regard.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You do realize he wasnt doing to bad last year in the rotation before they messed with him?

Joba was effective last year at times and he is still young, he can be a solid #3. I’ll take a #2 and #3 over a number #1 in this case. And I dont really think it was money that kept the Yanks from making the Halladay or Santana deals.

by YankeesJets on Jun 9, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont really think it was money that kept the Yanks from making the Halladay or Santana deals

OK, we disagree.

And Joba’s career arc concerns me, as does his drop in velocity and propensity for getting whacked around. I’m always kind of holding my breath when he’s in there.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

You really think money was the issue with the Johan deal?

They wound up spending that same money on CC. And I’m also sure you werent concerned about Joba back in 07, nobody knows what can happen with Stras going forward…it was one game.

by YankeesJets on Jun 9, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

It was Money + Prospects

CC cost them money.
Halliday and/or Santana would have cost them Joba/Phil AND $$$$. No deal.

I was less concerned about Joba in 2007. But even in 2007 I never assumed that he was going to be elite. And I’ll say it again, it isn’t the one game – it’s the stuff combined with control. Strasburg has four ++ pitches. That’s unreal, almost Pedroesque without (so far) the assholishness that Pedro brought. No one knows the future, we can only guesstimate. I’m OK with the fact that our guestimations don’t track one another. We’re sports fans – it’s what we do :-)

that's true.

But I don’t think the Nationals will go about it that way. They don’t have Dusty Baker, who’s basically kryptonite to young pitchers cuz he just doesn’t seem to care (poor Mike Leake and Homer Bailey…) about easy them in for the long haul.

The Nats seem firm with easing him in and building his innings up. The team is only 6 games back in the division (even tho last place…) so it would be interesting to see if they keep it up and get into the thick of things come September/October.

Would they shut Strasburg down for the greater good? Or would they go balls out and try and win it?

That’s also where Dusty killed Wood and Prior, they were trying to get in the series and had Prior and Wood throwing about 120 pitches each start

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 9, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Why does everyone assume that Strasburg is the one who falls apart?

Phil hasn’t been injury-free, and there have been whispers about Joba’s health and the loss of his stop shelf fastball. All pitchers are a health risk, period.

by d_c_guy on Jun 9, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Joba I agree with

but its the whole 99mph fastball thing. Hughes doesn’t throw that hard. Hughes injuries in the past weren’t arm related either.

Wood and Prior used to light up the radar gun. Strasburg averaged 97mph last night. His motion to me looks flawless…but then again, so was Prior’s.

Of course, he also kinda looks like Nolan Ryan out there or more recently, Justin Verlander. The kid’s gas looks effortless.

But if we’re talking about a bigger injury risk between Strasburg vs. Hughes (cuz Joba I think already is injured anyway…), I gotta say Strasburg’s the bigger risk to get hurt. Simply cuz of how hard he throws.

Buchholz does have an incredibly changeup to go with his excellent fastball. That’s something I hope Hughes develops over time.

No way the Nats will trade Stras, at all. They delayed bringing him up to June just to push his arbitration eligibility back a year—they are clearly hoping and planning to try to keep him a long, long time.

But speaking of a long, long time, there seems to be some concern that Strasburg’s mechanics may be a little too similar to Mark Prior’s (the whole “inverted W” business). That’s the only thing that gives me pause about predicting a HOF career for the kid…but man, last night was sure an incredible start.

by Yankee Frankee on Jun 9, 2010 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

Stras was great last night but he isnt the best young pitching spect I have ever seen..

He has a long way to go to accomplish what Doc Gooden did early on. By Strasburg’s age, Doc was already a rookie of the year, a Cy Young, a world champ, and owned one of the best seasons by a pitcher ever in 1985, on top of that he already had nearly 60 wins.

by YankeesJets on Jun 9, 2010 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

But Doc didn't have 14 strikeouts in his first start!

And just 5 IP? FAIL.

I’m just being facetious, of course, and I can’t help but think Strasburg’s going to match Gooden’s production. Kid has nasty stuff.

people need to calm down...

…this clearly a hypothetical to end all hypotheticals… answer the question, or don’t, and CHILLAX.

Calm down? Who is getting crazy? Its just a fantasy discussion

There is a better chance of a unicorn running on the field tonight than a deal like this ever happening.

strasburg's mechanics is the question

can he keep it up long term? from what i read he has high potential for arm problems.

Agreed
Strasburg is the real deal

Now now...

We still haven’t seen Strasburg pitch against a ML lineup… snap.

by NumberSeven on Jun 9, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

One or the other

Lets be honest, Strasburg has nasty stuff, better than that of both Joba Chamberlain AND Phil Hughes. I would trade Joba for Strasburg, or Hughes for Strasburg.

But BOTH? Strasburg isn’t worth that. They are trading a strong starter AND a big part of the bullpen for a guy who has had one career start in the major leagues against the Pirates. I think he’ll be a great pitcher, but I wouldn’t think about giving up both of them.

If Strasburg was with the Pirates...

….by trade deadline he would be wearing a Red Sox or Yankees jersey.

"He had no teeth, and he was slobbering all over himself. I'm thinking, 'You can have your money back, just get me out of here. Let me go be an accountant." I can't tell you how badly I wanted out of there."

I Would trade maybe Joba but definitely not hughes. IF Joba and Hughes were in the NL they would have AMAZING numbers, American League is a differen’t animal.

Forget the Nats...

If you’re willing to trade a Cy Young candidate (who, in the 5th spot of your rotation has outpitched your 1-4 starters) for a guy who just debuted then you’re not a GM…you’re a lousy gambler.

Hughes typically holds teams to 2 runs per game too. With this lineup, Yanks win with either one of these guys on the mound. I’d rather keep the Ace up our sleeve AND our 8th inning guy.

Strasberg Is that the guy who goes down the slide when the Brewer's hit a home run?

Cause if your talking about the guy on the Nationals I wouldn’t do it. I’d hate to be responsible for Washington DC being burnt to the ground. Then again, if Congress is in session….
