True All Stars

In light of the All Star Game being somewhat meaningless and meaningful at the same time, I'm curious how the PA readers and posters would go about selecting a true all star team for both leagues with no regards to general popularity. I would venture to say that even if preference of statistics used varied from person to person, we would get a team for both leagues that would truly be the best in baseball in July of 2010.

I'll be honest, I have trouble making sense of all the information on Baseball-Reference.com, but I would love to see what everyone comes up with for teams that would truly be the all star teams of 2010.

But, here's my selections, as who I think the best players in the AL and NL are that should be All-Stars (by no means is this comprehensive, just some of my selections if I were choosing based on stats alone):

American League

C - Joe Mauer (who else?)
1B - Miguel Cabrera / Justin Morneau
2B - Robinson Cano
3B - Evan Longoria
SS - Elvis Andrus / Derek Jeter
DH - Vlad Guerrero
OF - Austin Jackson / Nick Markakis / Magglio Ordonez / Ichiro / Nick Swisher / Vernon Wells

Pitching:

Ricky Romero (AL Strikeout Leader)
Phil Hughes / Clay Buchholz / Andy Pettitte (ERA leader) / David Price
Jon Lester

Mariano Rivera

National League

C - Ivan Rodriguez / Carlos Ruiz
1B - Albert Pujols / Joey Votto
2B - Martin Prado
3B - David Freese
SS - Troy Tulowitzki
OF - Jonny Gomes / Matt Holliday / Carlos Gonzalez
DH - Josh Willingham

Pitching:

Ubaldo Jimenez / Tim Lincecum / Roy Halladay / Dan Haren

Feel free to add or replace anyone. I'll admit these are all based on standard offensive stats for the position players and standard pitching stats. I don't imagine any position players I've named would be said to have terrible defensive skills (some possible unknowns in the NL).

true

but I admitted it wasn’t comprehensive, just the guys that I thought represented the best in each position right now. I appreciate all your suggestions below, good players that I missed for whatever reason.

He may lead the league in K's

but also leads the league in homers and hits and has a 4.83 ERA. He’s been pretty terrible this year

good point

Though, maybe if he were used in relief, those Ks might be useful in shorter appearances in the AS game?

by phonty on Jun 2, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

but you dont put a guy in the AS game if he doesn’t deserve it just because his K’s could be useful in relief

Mike Pelfrey deserves to be on that list too.

Behind Doc, Ubaldo and I guess Lincecum, Pelfrey is probably the 4th best starter in the NL this year. Way more deserving then Haren to put it lightly.

Which is all the more laughable that people even suggested that there’s “something wrong with the Yankees bats” when they couldn’t hit this guy. He’s very good.

Barry Zito

Adam Wainwright..hell, even everyone’s favorite Roy Oswalt does. Yea, Oswalt is 3-7, but that’s a testament to why pitcher wins is one of the worst stats you can find, cuz its not at all Oswalt’s fault he’s 3-7.

Ryan Zimmerman should be the starting 3B

Scott Rolen his backup.

Jason Heyward, Jason Werth, Ryan Braun, Matt Kemp…I’d probably take those 4 over the ones you mentioned. Probably Alfonso Soriano too

probably him over Matt Holliday

But those 4 that I mentioned, Andre Either if he’s able to play and Colby Rasmus over McCutchen.

Willingham also

he’s probably the only NL OF he’s got that’s I’d put on there.

Yeah

I really hope Rolen makes it, hes having a hell of a year. To bad he probably wont’

Girardi

Better pick alot of Yankees after Joe Maddon picked all his sucky Rays. 5 of the 15 reserves were rays. Pena, Zobrist, and Bartlett are not All Stars idc what they say.

Nah Cabrera > Morneau

He always under-rated and he’s having a better year (hrs, rbis) than Morneau who has a higher avg and obp

Pudge?

Ivan Rodriguez is undoubtedly one of the best catchers of all-time and, to my surprise, actually leads the NL in batting average for catchers. However, I like Miguel Olivo as a catcher in the All-Star game. He has hit for moderate power and has been a run producer for the Rockies. His on-base is nearly .400 as well.

We can sit here all day and talk statistics for who is better when it comes to Miguel Cabrera or Justin Morneau. But think of it this way… if the game is on the line.. who would you rather be at the plate for you? Miguel Cabrera or Justin Morneau?

I think I’ll take Cabrera

Home is in Section 201 Row 24.
