Life On The Line, Who's Pitching?

I saw this tweet and it got me thinking. If life was on the line, who's pitching? Andy Pettitte is certainly a good choice, as he wins double digit games like it's nothing. Another good choice is Roy Halladay (even after last nights performance)

Who would you choose? Comment an active players name to be your choice. If you agree with someone else, rec' their comment of the players name. Top 5 rec'd players will appear in a poll on Friday morning.

Ehhhhh

you are equating grit and experience, I think they are two separate things though not mutually exclusive. Andy has boat loads of massive pressure games under his belt and has succeeded at a very high rate. How many post season clinching games has King Felix pitched in yet? If I could pick a starting 3 for a post season rotation I think it would be Halladay, CC and Jiminez

although he has been the best starting pitcher in baseball so far this year.

Right here? Right now?

Today? I’m going with Stephen Strasburg. No, really, hear me out. There are three reasons: (1) his stuff is as filthy as anyone in the game; (2) he’s handled the “Strasburg Savior” and “Baseball Jeeezus” pressure really well; and (3) most hitters haven’t had a look at him yet.

Don’t underestimate (3) – look how the Yankees have always tended to make rookie pitchers look good the first time they face them.

by d_c_guy on Jun 16, 2010 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

While I agree that Strasburg is nasty...

He still has more to prove. He’s shutdown two major league ballclubs in the Pirates and Indians.. but I feel like he definitely needs to prove himself against more competitive teams. I am in no way taking credit from him because he has been FILTHY. However, he should probably get around the league a couple times more before we don him as our “life on the line” pitcher

In Jeter, We trust.

by Chris McKeown on Jun 16, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

He needs to have quite a few seasons under his belt to be the real deal

Being great for a couple seasons and then blowing your arm out or magically losing 5-7 mph can turn your fortune right around. As for straight up talent, he is the most talented pitcher I have seen in many a moon. Let’s just hope he stays healthy and hope he does Chien Ming Wang his way to the DL because of having to hit and run bases.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jun 16, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Different questions

I’m not putting him in the HOF, saying he’s the best pitcher in baseball, or even betting yet that he’s a guy I want to build a rotation around for 4-6 years. It’s to pitch one game, this week (Strasburg’s next turn is Friday) with my life on the line. If the game is against a more competitive team, I’m banking on the lack of familiarity factor to work in Strasburg/my favor. So yes, I’m gaming the system.

Mind you, I don’t want my life on the line with any of these guys – the Yankees shelled Halladay yesterday, and he’s a contender for #1 pitcher. And even the best pitcher on the top of his game can lose with no run support. Guidry lost 3 times in 1978, for cryin’ out loud. While that leaves him 8:1 in W:L ratio, that’s not good enough for me to bet my life!

Gave up 5 runs, but I also think it was lack of concentration because the Yanks put up a 7 spot for him, the very next inning he gave up 4. But he got the win and is 9-1 win a 3.11 ERA, I can safely say he has exceeded all our expectation for his first full year as a starter

Even your statistics show that there are 5 starters who have better ERAs than him...

Not that I would necessarily take those guys over him but he isn’t as fantastic as you think…

He allows far more baserunners than other elite pitchers (40th in WHIP) and he has a mediocre 64 Ks (41st). He’s 34th in innings pitched and near the top of the league in walks..

But, if you think he’s the best starter.. that’s great for you.. but you’re wrong.

Really? He isn't the best starter in baseball...

Now that we’re talking big games… I would easily take Sabathia, Pettitte and Lester over David Price if you want to travel the rout of “AL East” pitchers. Hell, I’d take Beckett as well.

Cliff Lee shutdown the Yankees in the world series twice last year and he pitched for a NL team… but you’re entitled to your opinion. I’d take Halladay as well in a playoff game. I’d probably take some of those NL pitchers as well.. but since it’s only American League we’re allowed to talk about I’ll stick with those guys.

All of them are better than David Price. Beckett has had a rough year but has brought it in the playoffs ever since ’03 with the Marlins.

I would go with the Yankees and Red Sox. I think the Rayss will slow down because their pitching, for two months, was simply untouchable. Now that they are coming back down to Earth.. I think people will see that they aren’t capable of 98 wins.

Honestly, I would still be much more nervous to face the Red Sox than the Rays in the playoffs. Although I hate them, I respect the Red Sox too much to say they’re out of the picture

Trust me, playing Washington and Pittsburgh once really isnt going to help Jimenez all that much…but…since you like stats

K/9
Jimenez: 8.10
Price: 6.72
Cain: 6.34

BB/9
Jimenez: 3.28
Price: 3.68
Cain: 2.73

HR/9
Jimenez: 0.29
Price: 0.63
Cain: 0.39

BABIP
Jimenez: .232
Price: .265
Cain: .241

LOB%
Jimenez: 91.3%
Price: 80.3%
Cain: 80.8%

ERA
Jimenez: 1.16
Price: 2.31
Cain: 2.05

WAR
Jimenez: 2.9
Price: 1.5
Cain:2.2

So, as you can see, Matt Cain is actually a better pitcher than David Price too. You know…based on stats.

Ok, you are saying I didn’t show anything when you haven’t showed a single statistic yet I am the one who is obviously wrong because you just dont like my statistics. You still haven’t made any case for why Matt Cain’s statistics are better than Price’s. Two NL pitchers (that I showed, there are actually about 4) have better stats than Price, I show you statistics, you made an argument earlier that stats are the barometer, yet you say that I haven’t shown anything because my point disproves yours. Very interesting.

go head and find one single pitcher that faces the top 4 offenses

in every single one of their starts.

Who’s Ubaldo faced? Dodgers once, Braves once, and was OK against the Jays.

Other then that, nothing.

SO apparently it matters for Price, but doesn’t for Ubaldo.

In the AL, where it matters, PRice has been the best this year. Hence, Price is best in baseball.

Come on Free

I know he’s good, but the question includes the phrase “life on the line”. You can’t be serious selecting Price. When has he pitched in a big game and proven himself with his team’s season, much less “life”, on the line? Pettitte has been tried and tested in this type situation and nobody currently in the game has been better. If not Pettitte, it’s gotta be Lee. No one else has proven anything.

Okay, I have two then

If there is no DH, I take CC Sabathia. He showed he is a big game pitcher in last year’s playoffs, and if there is no DH I will happily take is .266/.274/.395 line as a batter.

If there is a DH I take Roy Halladay.

How quickly we forget . . .

I’ll take C.C. Sabathia based on what he did way back in . . . . October 2009. Gman is right.

I’d take Matt Cain. Guy would give you all of himself, he has the makeup, he has the stuff, he has the stats, and he has the ability to go out there every day and throw a no hitter.

I don't want to add to the giant Price thread above, but:

If it’s strength of schedule we care about, Price isn’t even the best pitcher in his own division.

AL East Pitchers by WAR:

Jon Lester: 2.5
Ricky Romero: 2.4
Phil Hughes: 2.2
Clay Buchholz, Sean Marcum: 2.1
Andy Pettitte, Brett Cecil, David Price, James Shields, Brandon Morrow: 1.5

In other words, Price isn’t even the FIFTH best pitcher in his division; he’s 10-2, but he’s also playing way over his head right now (ERA 2.31; xFIP 4.35) for a really good team.

He wont change his mind because he isn’t using any actual stats, reason, or rationale. He is just in belief that Price is (which is fine, he is entitled to that opinion).

But the problem is, you can’t make an argument Bradshaw, you can only say, I believe. If you don’t use stats or rationale, you can only say this is something I think, maybe it is a gut feeling, I dont know. But stats don’t back you up in any way.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Jun 17, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd go with Lincecum

He doesn’t have any post-season experience, but he’s been phenomenal his entire career. Plus, he’d probably be high on weed, so he wouldn’t feel the pressure. If anything, he’d want to get outs quick so he could get back to the dugout and eat Oreos.
