Around the Yankee Galaxy: Health

Injuries are the main concern in Yankee-land right now. While Jorge Posada is about to return to catching duties, Brett Gardner set to return to leftfield, and A-Rod working to get back to thirdbase by Tuesday, Marcus Thames is taking a trip on the DL.

- Thames strained his right hamstring in yesterdays 9-3 win over the Astros. Corner outfielder Chad Huffman was promoted from Triple-A Scranton to take his place.

- Posada missed about two weeks at the end of May and has played nothing but DH since returning. Today will be his first time catching since May 16.

- Gardner looks set to return to the starting lineup for the first time in five days.

- A sore hip kept A-Rod out of Saturday's match, but Joe Girardi was relieved that it had nothing to do with last year's surgery -

I think anytime you get where you're looking in that region, you're going to start thinking about what happened the year before. But being something completely different than the hip socket makes you feel a lot better.

What's wrong with Posada at DH?

Not that Posada is not good behind the plate, but it will hurt the team to lose Cervelli back there (behind and in front of the plate). Posada’s performance yesterday (Saturday) in front of the plate was awesome, so it doesn’t look like DHing is hurting him. I think the team is pretty darn good with things in the Catcher position the way they are right now.

he doesn't like sitting in the dugout all the time

then only doing something 4-5+ times a game.

also he feels he can still catch

which he can. He’s not at Matsui’s level yet where he’s that big a liability in the field.

No it won't hurt the team to lose Cervelli back there

Jorge has been a great addition to this team for many many years. He’s a pro. Somehow I think he still knows how to catch, notwithstanding the opinion of many posters here. And besides, Cervelli needs a break.

DH/C

Right now the Yankees best team is probably Posada DH, Cervelli catching. That doesn’t mean Posada shouldn’t ever catch, but for the time being it makes sense for him to spend more time there than not. It’s also not a bad idea for him to get more comfortable hitting as the DH since that’s where his not too distant future is.

Not having a full-time DH will also allow Girardi to give A-Rod a few games there while he recovers from whatever’s ailing him.

I agree with that

Theoretically, yea

but look at Jorge’s career stats as a DH. He’s not nearly the same guy.

I don’t think the Yanks would lose anything if they had Cervelli DHing instead..tho he’s probably the same restless way.

It is something

he will have to make an adjustment too in the future though.

If we had a real DH

our lineup would be MUCH better with Posada catching. That’s where the Yankees weakness is, DH.

Good to get Jorge back behind the plate

I love Cervelli, but all Cervelli worship aside, his weaknesses have been exposed as a hitter the last month, and aside from the usual clutch hits he always provides since he is a God, he has been exposed and is turning into a liability offensively right now. Having to catch virtually every single game doesn’t help him either. He would make one of the best backups in the majors. But he’s not the Yankees starting catcher of the future.

Any chance A-Rod starts today? At least as a DH? Or is it definite that he’s out until Tuesday barring a pinch hitting need or an emergency?

plus

Jorge is MUCH better offensively as a catcher.

Cervelli’s BA is coming down, but he is still hitting well w/RISP.
