Who would you prefer?
With Nick Jonson, Randy Winn and Marcus Thames not exactly living up to all they were advertised for, who would you rather have in their position? Since these were the people brought in to fill the DH hole for Matsui and OF platoon with the departure of Damon we shouldn't expect too much. But with injuries to Swisher and Granderson, we've had to live with these people (Winn and Thames) as everyday players. If money was an issue, which i think it was, why these two guys? There are better players out there, no?

I think you're overreacting
NJ was brought in to get on base and hit a few homers. Yes, he’s not been as advertised so far. However, Thames and Winn are being asked to fill roles that they were not intended for and it’s quite honestly a credit to Cervelli that the team is still winning series (or splitting) regardless of their presence in both the batter’s box and the outfield. Swisher, Posada, and Granderson being hurt is why Thames and Winn are even playing at all. If Swish and Granderson were in, they’d be rotating through the DH spot with Tex when Posada needs to rest and Cervelli needs to catch.
Was Jayson Werth even a FA available to sign this past off-season?
I never like NJ but i hoped he would have stayed healthy cuz he would have been a very good dh
too bad johnson and healthy don;t mix. Thame can potential be a good DH. he can be a 20 hr+ guy if he we give him the spot and he bats 8 or sumthing. His numbers right now are pretty decent but he should NEVER play the field. tbh he is the perfect DH, cheap and has good power. Winn was always supposed to be a back up, grandy if you forgot already …our all star OF, is injured forcing us to use winn. cashman can;t foresee that. winn is supposed to play the role GGBG played late last year, mainly pinch runner and late defensive subs. His moves were good in terms of needs, but injury is something we can;t foresee except for NJ, which is why i never liked that signing too much.
why is jayson werth on this list?
he’s not available and its not like the phillies are gonna trade their only good power righty in a lineup with utley, howard, ibanez in the middle.
alex rios was great for the blue jays and had a crap year last year. they put him on waivers….we could have had a shot at him
the white sox eventually got him for nothing. he’s had a great start to the season.
still young. plays centerfield. good speed. definitely would have been a welcomed addition in my book

the contract he signed
is 7 years and $70 million. it was signed in 2008 and made his 2008 year the first year of the contract. that would mean 2010 is his third year.
when he signed that it was a relatively good deal for a young, promising outfielder.
sorry for the delay, im out in california visiting family

I think Cashman should've gotten a medical degree
so he could make Swisher and Granderson healthy.
You DO realize that Winn and Thames were designed to be backups, right?
Just keep winning
I felt
this offseason, Reed Johnson would have been a better fit than Winn or Thames,
but that is water under the bridge now…
Stay thirsty my friends.
I enjoy your sig every time I read it.

Yeah, if anything, they are performing above expectations,
they were brought here to be bench players.

Why do you think Werth, Rios or Bay are available? For Bay, why would you make a multi year committment to a guy who is basically a band aid until the other guys come back in a few days?

As Far as Marcus Thames
He has played very good all season in his role. Where do you get the idea that he has not lived up to expectations? why because he dropped one fly ball? Thames was brought in to face left handed pitchers and he has succeed thus far in that department, by hitting nearly .400 against them.
the list was compiled of long shorts and free agents just to gauge what we as arm-chair GM's might have done different.
Cashman spent all offseason saying that money was a big determining factor in his decisions. Okay, let’s go with that. We need to save money, so Rios and Werth aren’t the best picks, but we can dream, right? I think a better monetary choice for bench/ OF platoon was Jonny Gomes. He was cut by the Reds and was a F.A. The Reds have since signed him to a 1 yr. $800,000 contract. That’s affordable, no? Considering he is putting up decent numbers (even on the Reds) and would make a better fielder than Thames, leaving Thames to DH only. Why sign Winn to a $1.1 mil contract? There are better alternatives out there is all i’m saying.
Winn is a whole lot better defender then Gomes.
Thames is a better RH bat off the bench then Gomes.
Just keep winning

Hindsight is 20/20 (I'm going to do the honors here.)

Where is there no mention of Ryan Garko or Reed Johnson?
It’s easy to cherry-pick names of past FA fringe players who, this year, are having some moderate success with their new teams.
It's "whom" would we prefer. Whom.
And it’s not realistic to prefer having near all- stars as substitutes.
