I'm mildly surprised

Having to get 5 outs in an inning will do that to you.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
he looked fine!
it should have been 1-2-3
Scutaro got out 5-3
McDonald walked, but he should have been out. 2 pitches just off the corner according to the umpk although the YES strike zone showed that it was a strike
Thames dropped a routine fly ball that would have ended the inning
Rivera was fine. The Yankees setup man, right fielder, and the home plate umpire are to blame for this ugly loss.
im not blaming him, but Mo normally gets through that
I think he’ll become lights-out again soon
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
He struggled last season at the beginning too remember?
so bad that people were talking about taking him out of the closers role. He responded with one of the best seasons of his career. He’ll be fine. And he was fine tonight
I'm not saying he won't be fine, I think he'll be fine within a week, but
Today he wasn’t how he normally was, Mo last season (and Mo before his injury this season) get’s those 5 outs with no runs. He’ll be fine soon, just a rough patch.
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
He just needs work

no, probably not. Can’t believe they lost this game. If that stupid ump could give Rivera a pitch on the corner or if Thames could do what he’s paid to do as a professional outfielder and CATCH THE FLY BALL, this would have been a sweep.
Ugly, ugly loss.

Agreed. Winn and Thames suck my ass. The Yankees are in serious trouble with these two boobs in the outfield. Given their injuries I think they may need to consider making a move for an outfielder who can hit and, ya know, catch a f-ing fly ball.

I think we’re going to use this thread as the recap.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Thames and A-Rod errors aside (they won it for us last night, helped blow it for us tonight), what concerns me over the long haul of the season is the bullpen. The Joba-Mo combo failed big-time twice in a row…hopefully that’s an anomaly. But overall the bullpen just seems really, really shakey, so when Joba & Mo blow out this badly, it’s a bit unnerving.
by Yankee Frankee on May 19, 2010 12:22 AM EDT reply actions
ARod's error wasn;t that bad, he made a good play but couldn't get it to tex
what Joba did after that small error is atrocious
the reason Joba and Mo failed this time
was errors. Particularly Rivera. A-Rod’s was a tough play that may have been a bad call by the ump, and Joba got pounded afterwards. There were no close calls with him. Rivera got beat because Thames dropped a completely ROUTINE fly ball, and the ump wouldn’t give him the corners (which Rivera, throwing only one pitch, needs to get). Joba I’m worried about a little. But don’t be worried about Mo. He’ll be fine.
the play of the game was the sac bunt
Why take the bat out of Cervelli’s hands?

by MichaelGGBGrabow on May 19, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
That would have been risky
I know he is doing good lately but he still has had some problems with control
no that made sense
a runner on 3rd with two chances to get him in. The problem was the bottom third of the lineup are guys who shouldn’t be in the lineup at all.
i don;t know why we can pinch hit with swisher
yeah he;s batting from his right side buti it doesn’t make him a worse hitter than winn batting from the left
maybe Swish could've bat right handed against Papelbon
it would probably have given the Yanks a better shot than with Winn
Seriosuly i don't get it
being a righty doesn;t mean he automatically gets neutralized by a righty. He’s still a good player with s good eye
No it wasn't; the successful bunt reduced their chances of winning
Not the right move at all.

Any other manager wouldve done the same thing
I hate Girardi, it was the right move, a sac fly ties the game, and it takes away the splitter

I understand they are backups, but they are the worst backups I have ever seen in all my years as a Yankee fan
by YankeesJets on May 19, 2010 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Angel Berroa, Cody Ransom, Wilson Betemit...
Those are just within the past 2 years. Are they really better…
For what end? To use your depleted bullpen in the 10th?
Any play that reduces your probability of winning is NOT a good play. Somebody should send Girardi a link to Fangraphs.

I know hindsight is 20/20...
And woulda shoulda couldas don’t count.
But if we let Cervelli swing, the worst that happens is he gets out, which he did anyway. With his RISP numbers, maybe he gets Robbie home. Tie game. I’d rather play extras than lose it like that.

actually, the worst that could have happened was an infield pop
this way Robbie was on third and we had two chances to get him home. anything that didn’t stay in the infield from thames would have gotten him home. While Cervelli is incredible with RISP, joe made a good choice with Miranda being the only one in the bottom half of the lineup with a hit. Cervelli might not have actually gotten Robbie home; he could have struck out or popped out. Thames didn’t have any hits, but he can sent the ball far, which would have gotten Robbie in. Miranda was 2-5 tonight, so the odds were slightly better for him to get a hit than Thames or Cervelli.
You need to do better...

…but then again, this is the same buy who brought us Pavano, Brown, Javy part 1, Winn, Thames…the list goes on…
plz don;t be stupid he didn;t amke bad moves
winn is a back up..we never expect grandy to go down.
Thames is only there for his bat which is he has shown he can do it
and Javy seems to have turned a corner
Thames is a good hitter
he’s been solid with the bat. Girardi just uses him on defense as if he’s Curtis Granderson
I still think that the Winn and Thames solutions, even if they were only to be bench players wasn't thought out...
…I see Cashman’s positioning choices this year are influenced by the hopes of getting Crawford next year…can we play this year before we go hunting next offseason?
by Bronx_Booyah on May 19, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions
bet next year we'll be hunting for Crawford despite Gardner having a good year...
by Bronx_Booyah on May 19, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
this is true...but Cashman loves the Free Agent market...easier to spend money than bring someone up through the farm...

Gomes is a great enforcer
But this isnt hockey
by YankeesJets on May 19, 2010 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Gomes is cheaper at $800,000 to Werth's $10 Mil
by Bronx_Booyah on May 19, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions
apparently Cashman did...thats why he signed Winn and Thames...
…it was cheaper than Damon…
by Bronx_Booyah on May 19, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions
and sadly the've become everyday players...
…all the more reason to have good players on the bench in case they NEED to start for an injured player…I would have gone after other players rather than Thames who sucks with a glove and Winn who can’t hit a ball off of a tee….
by Bronx_Booyah on May 19, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions
I can live with Thames
but Winn needs to go, he is an automatic out, and he isnt a gold glover by no means

Disappointing loss
Can we all agree that Thanes needs to make the DH spot his new home? Even before tonight, he sucked as an outfielder.

i've been calling thames ot dh permenatly since that game where he costed aj 2 runs
i don;t see why we use him on defense, miranda prolly would have done better in rf
The reason I disagree with the bunt is that our bottom 3rd is a blackhole where rallys go to die
Cervelli looked like our last real chance for a hit, unless the bottom 3 were to all walk with a papelbum implosion
Last season the bottom 3rd was dangerous as hell, right now it looks like 3 pitchers
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
thames isn;t bad with the bat
but getting that one out allowed them to simply pitch around thames to get to miranda and winn
which is why that didn't work and we might've been better off letting cervelli hit
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
Actually that is a good point
Especially figuring Winn and Thames were going to be up there trying too hard for redemption, which usally doesnt happen

For every one of these close games you win, you seem to lose a few more.
That’s why I hate close games. I felt sick tonight.

cervelli bunt
we all know it would be better to have an extra shot at driving him in, girardi made the move because of what was following cervelli. he was hopefull of any decent contact by what is a terrible situation. We had some lineup with JEET, DAMON .TEX, AROD,MATSUI CANO, POSADA, SWISH, GARDNER CERVELLI mixed in with Posada, Do you think Detroit and the Angels are idiots. And the capper is getting rid of Abraue. Send Granderson Winn and Thames , Johnson back to where they came. I will even take Melky back and that would be an improvment. Mabey we need some oldtime respect for what these guys did for us and were still capable of doing it again. as of now they better get a big bat in the outfield or you can kiss this year goodbye
