Do we want Papelbon in Pinstripes?

I'm posting this for a simple reason: to point to it every single time another idiotic Sox fan says that Paps (as they call him) will be in pinstripes next year.

Hey Sox Fans:

We don't want your often spectacularly inept closer.  We think he's a maroon who has absolutely no business donning the pinstripes, let alone succeeding the great Mariano.  On top of that, we have a ton of HOME-GROWN candidates to take over when Mariano decides to hang 'em up.

Best,

Yankees Fans

Sorry in advance for the ugly imagery

I’m literally holding my breath so I won’t throw up in my mouth at the thought of Paps in the ’stripes.

We might take Bard...

but you’d have to pay us to take Papelbitch. He might be useful at Scranton/WB.

Probably a redsox fan.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I never wanted this POS even when he was good

And aren’t there other closers out there that if the Yanks gotta go FA route? Why is it always Papelcrap?

No one likes Papelcrap.

I'd be against signing Papelbon...

Just because the shelf life on closers not named Mariano is not that long. Papelbon’s in his 5th year as a dominant reliever and it’s already clear that he’s not the same force that he was in 2006 and 2007. It’s happened to the Mets with K-Rod where, while still effective, he’s not the same pitcher he was in Anaheim, and in turn isn’t really worth what they’re paying him.

I don’t care that Papelbon’s a Red Sock though when it comes to whether or not I’d want him. There are a few Sox and ex-Sox who I’d be disgusted if the Yankees ever signed (Manny, Pedro, Varitek), but despite being brash and arrogant, I don’t think Papelbon is a bad guy. If he was on the Yankees, Yankee fans would love him.

Stipulation

I’d take him as the 7th inning guy. If Joba’s destiny is the bullpen, then I want Joba closing games in 3 years.

Couldn't we be nice and just vote "heck no?"

Papelbon is 0-5 vs the Yanks with an ERA in the 7s over the last 3 years. How can we get him to stay in Boston?

by designatedquitter on May 18, 2010 9:35 AM EDT reply actions

keep crushing him like this

it’ll lower his value, and he’ll get paid less. Of course, the Sox management, the idiots that they are, will still think he’s just as good as Rivera and pay him that decreased amount of money!

I hope Paplebum stays. The Yanks own him. But the Yankees have had success against Bard too. So maybe him as the closer could be a good thing.

Noooooooooooo!

Seriously one of the most over rated pitchers to come along in some time.

What do you have to call him a Maroon like that’s a bad thing?

Leave him in Boston

So I got a T-shirt for X-mas that says Yankees WS champions and I decided that I would join PA and tell everyone how smart I am (that is until someone else wins and I get a new T-Shirt) Grandma has a JC Pennys catalog so I am showered in all the champions gear. Is skinflute a real word?

I agree with all you. Plus, even thought he has alot saves in the last 5 years I have always thought that Papelbom is one of the most overated closers in baseball. He gets the job done more times than not but usually he lets the tying run come to the plate before he get focused and gets the save.

Plus ESPN and other media outlets talk about this guy like he is the second coming of Mariano Rivera. If anything he is the new John Wetland at best. The only closer more overated than Papelbon is Trevor Hoffman.

by mkrozansky on May 18, 2010 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, Hoffman is overated

He may have close to 600 saves but he is what you call a compiler. He has rarely has n era under 2 and the only reason why he is close to 600 saves is because he has been a closer since 1995. He has never been a consistantly dominate and has been a bad big game reliever. Just ask Matt Holiday or Scott Brouis how Hoffman pitches in the big postseason spot.

by mkrozansky on May 18, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree

He has a sub 3.00 ERA ever year. You dont have to have a sub 2.00 ERA to be considered a good closer.

by Yankees10 on May 18, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

And you say

the reason he has close to 600 saves is because he has been a closer since 95, but guess what thats the reason why hes been a closer for so long because hes good at it.

by Yankees10 on May 18, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly

Rivera is the best closer of all time. And his career ERA is (however slightly) over 2.00. A 2 ERA for a closer is outstanding. Hoffman isn’t overrated at all.

by nyyrocks29 on May 18, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hoffman's going right in the HOF

Won’t be a question. He’s not as good as Rivera, but not being as good as the best guy ever to play the position doesn’t make you not good, or even overrated.

by long time listener on May 18, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

True

Will agree with the gent above on one point, has not been big time in the postseason

Stay thirsty my friends.

by Great Gatsby on May 18, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

ERA for a closer is a useless stat...

you give up 2 R in 1 IP and your ERA skyrockets.

Hoffman’s really always been a dominant reliever aside from the past few years. He’s always been in the top 3-4 Closers in the game..I dunno how the hell that makes him overrated.

Simply the fact that closers have a short shelf life, and Hoffman’s been closing since 1995…………right there, your who argument that he’s overrated is completely shot down.

Longevity is a big deal for a closer. Hoffman has it, so he’s not overrated.

Just keep winning

I rec'd your comment is hopes of this thread being unrec'd.

The only person I’d like to see in the ’stripes less than Papelbon is Youkilis.

by Leviticus6688 on May 18, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

well...

Youkilis is probably one of those players you love to hate, cuz he looks like an idiot and a douche..but he’s actually good at his job.

With A-Rod and Tex on the squad, he’d be redundant or a nice DH option….but I wouldn’t be against him on the team. Maybe more so of course if he was a career Milwaukee Brewer….but still.

Just keep winning

by FreeBradshaw on May 18, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Screw that

I would want no part of Youkalis on the Yanks

by Yankees10 on May 18, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

Hate him, but Youk’s a hell of a ball player and his style of taking a lot of pitches, drawing a lot of walks, and hitting for power and average would fit in very nicely in our lineup.

It’ll never happen, but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it if Cervelli would happen to smile upon a possible trade or signing.

We'd rather have Rivera be ours

wait a minute…

Rivera is playing as long as he is capable of getting batters out at a high level. He’s said that before. Personally, I don’t see him slowing down, and wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was still a Yankees in 2015, five years from now (he said he’d pitch 5 more years after he won the WS last year).

Let me say again- no to Papelbon. End of discussion.

by designatedquitter on May 19, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Meh..

I’d think about it. He’s been going through a rough patch, but come on guys. He’s still young and is probably the best option after Mo retires. After all, he did lead the Sox to the ’07 WS. Come on.

Who are we kidding. No way.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

HUH ????

Why on earth would we want to see Papelbon in pinstripes???? My reflex feeling about him lately is that he may be losing it to the point of losing his job as closer — in Boston or anywhere else.

Papelbon

I’ve never heard him being trouble in the clubhouse or that he does not take care of his body. He is willing to face his failures. We should not let the fact that he plays for the Red Sox blind us to his potential value if he were willing to come over. Babe Ruth was once on the Red Sox too. Papelbon may not be Mariano — he may be seeing that now. But if Mariano retires, there are few better choices outside of Joba. If Papelbon can co-exist with Bard, he should be enough of a professional to be a good teammate with Joba. So many teams need closers 1A and 1B.

by logiet on May 21, 2010 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

Papelbum

Sucks! Who cares if he isnt trouble in the clubhouse. He is a snotty little punk who if I remember correctly said he was better than Mo and should be the one closing the all-star game in Yankee Stadium. It’s not the fact that he plays for the Sux that is the reason we dont like him although that helps in the overall judgement. I think we hate him because of his gay little wanna be tough guy face with his stupid curled lip like he’s intense. Or maybe it’s the images of his gay river dance in his gay spandex dancing around like a retarded circus freak. Either way I hate his guts. As far as Pukilis. The guys in his own clubhouse hate that guy. He may be good but I wouldnt take that guy no matter what.
