A Skewed View - 2010 Offseason
A recent topic of conversation amongst fans has been this past offseason. As fans we tend to stray away from looking into the future, wanting to deal with the more 'now' approach with the deals we as fans would prefer. There are some of us who would like to sell the farm in order to get that big name piece that will surely be the big puzzle piece to help us get to the next World Series, but most of us know it rarely takes just one piece. It takes a team. Since you can't just pump out a team, you need to build one, and to do that you sometimes need to do things that might blow up in your face if all doesn't go according to plan.
This offseason started as soon as the final out was recorded and the Phillies packed their bags. First topic of the Hot Stove was 'which are we going to keep? Damon or Matsui?' Because we can't keep both. Damon would be too expensive and we couldn't risk having Matsui taking up a DH spot (not to mention having bad crockery for knees). We eventually found out that we couldn't keep either. Damon went to Detroit and Matsui to Cali.
The Damon saga will be talked about even after he eventually retires. We know the convoluded reasoning behind both sides, one wanting a new, long term deal and the other wanting to both fill a need and keep options open for a possible Crawford deal in future. So with the departure of Damon, there was a decent sized hole left in our offense.
To fill the gap we turned to the free agent market to help fill it. Instead of grabbing up one player to fill the hole, it was decided to use a variety of talents to platoon and share duties. Nick Johnson was brought in for his high OBS. Thames for his numbers against lefty pitchers and Winn as a platoon LF. The money we would 'save' on not signing Damon or Matsui we would use to pay the team of replacements.
We made other deals, like signing Curtis Granderson to play as our starting CF, sending a much loved Melky Cabrera to Atlanta. Javier Vazquez was signed as a definitive fourth/ fifth starter to help eat up innings and raise the Yankees strikeout numbers to help keep bullpen usage down. And so we had our team. Then the season started.
31 games in we now know that Javy, NJ, Thames and Winn are not living up to their potential. And Damon and Matsui are off to respectable starts. Now the seeds of doubt start to sink in. Did we do the right thing? No one can predict the future. No one could see Granderson getting hurt, thus leaving our outfield in a bit of a bind (especially with the departure of Melky and Austin Jackson). Thames and Winn are doing next to nothing with the bats, and i swear every time i see Thames in the field i see Luis Castillo dropping that pop up at Citi Field. Johnson is also on the DL (though some of us half-expected that) but HIS offense was lacking also. So again i ask, did we make the right choices?
Good thing it's still early and Boston is doing so lousy, because if this was truly a 3 team race between Tampa, New York and Boston, we might be in trouble.

Cash acxtually started his offseason the day he submitted the WS roster.
Dombroski said Cash called him the same day.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
We have the best record in MLB...
WTF was wrong with the offseason?

You're Right!
That one win mean we failed miserably in our offseason. If we still had Damon, Matsui, Melky, and Coke, no question 31-0.

Johnson blows
Period. All you guys need to get real about Johnson. If Vazquez fails miserably his next outing he needs to be benched too. Winn has not helped. Thames is more of a liability than anything unless he’s DH’ing against lefties. Granderson, also on the DL, has been less than mediocre. To this point, it has been a failure on Cashman’s part for bringing these guys on board while letting Damon go, trading away AJax and Coke(how valuable would he be right now with the way our bullpen has been performing?), and trading Melky (yes, I know he’s off to a slow start, but he’s in a different league and needs to adjust to new pitchers) left us screwed in the outfield. No, I don’t see the sky falling, but it just may be a rough road if A-Rod and Tex don’t get hot for a long period of time.
Ok
What I don’t get is u give Melky the benefit of the doubt but piss all over Johnson… Oh Melky just needs to adjust, but Johnson sucks ass? C’mon if u think Johnson will hit 170 all year ur crazy. Maybe it was a bad idea, but it’s been what 35 games? If he still sucks after 100 I’ll give u all credit saying ur right, but come on.

Offseason ...
Letting Damon go was a no-brainer in my opinion, as was trading Jackson for Granderson. Gardner has elevated his game, and I’m hopeful will stay around the .280 mark with plenty of steals throughout the season.
Letting Matsui go hurts. I don’t care if we are atop the power rankings, or Matsui has a negative WAR, we all know what he does in the clutch. Johnson on the other hand is dead-man walking. Sure he has a high OBP, but contrast that with the amount of time he’s either DL’d or sitting one out and you begin to question his value. Adding Johnson was a gamble, and it appears to have backfired.
Finally Javy. Cashman again rolled the dice and it backfired. Javy cannot pitch on the big stage. He’s a nice NL-type starter in a place like Atlanta, San Diego, Houston. Javy’s impact on the Yankees isn’t as severe as Johnson though because we have options — Mitre, Aceves, even Nova. We don’t yet have that luxury with Johnson.

Do we honestly have to keep doing this
Some of you need to stop complaining about who we let go in the offseason and hope that the players we brought in do well. I miss Damon, Matsui, Melky, and would have loved to see Ajax but I got over it and some of you guys need to do the same. Theres nothing we can do now whats done is done they aint coming back so there is really no reason to keep bitching about it.
I don't think anyone is not hoping that the new guys do well.
However, a lot of guys questioned the offseason player losses, myself included. Everyone has the right to comment and will particularly if they feel vindicated. There was quite a backlash against folks who complained about the moves in question. What you are advocating is not second guessing…seems like that’s a huge part of sports. If you don’t like it, don’t read and or don’t comment on these threads.
HUH?
I am over it. Do you understand that looking back is part of the game and the moves are fair game for comment? You don’t like the subject matter? Why do you care what we think then? Are you 10 years old?
Im just saying it has been said over and over and over and over again
Look at the picture on the first comment that pretty much sums up what I feel about people bringing it up.
By continuing to bitch about the guys bringing it up.
See the hypocrisy? Also it is “Beating a dead horse” not “the” …which it seems I AM starting to do as well.
My apologies if this was your 1st comment on the subject
But I stand by my statement. I may not be complaining about the moves on this rapidly devolving board (as I have been known to be wrong in the past) but these folks have a right to look back and complain just as you have a right to gloat (if you feel like it) when the moves work out.
And I agree
That there isn’t squat we can do about those moves now! :-) I hope you get to gloat and that I can be wrong…again!
