Around SBN: Randy Moss A Raven?

Just not our night: Yanks drop opener to Tigers, 5-4

I hate these kind of games: the should, coulda, woulda kind. If A-Rod doesn't commit a first-inning error... If Randy Winn doesn't pop out with one out and runners on first and third... If Boone Logan doesn't allow a two-out triple off a lefty's bat... If Magglio Ordonez doesn't make a sliding catch in rightfield...

If none of those happen, the Yanks either tie or win the game.

Regardless, the Yankees looked rather flat. Perhaps it was due to playing in Detroit less than 24 hours after a game in Boston. (Thanks, schedule-makers!)

Mitre pitched about as well as we could have expected: 4.1 ip, 3 er, 5 h, 2 bb, 4 k.

The only real positive from this game was Joba's awesome perfect inning where he K'd the side (and averaged 97 MPH). Oh, and that Jim Leyland had to use all but one of his relievers.

Play of the Game: Randy Winn popping out with the Yanks down by one, one out, 8th inning, runners on the corners (-16%).

Comment of the Game: Bronx_Booyah, responding to the above.

how much longer do we have to see Thames & wynn in the lineup let alone on this team/roster, @ least 1 of them has to go… there has to be someone better then them out there to play while granderson gets healthy….

by cmypath78 on May 10, 2010 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

yeah at least thames offers the possiblitiy of an occassionally hr although his defense is downright dreadful, but yeah, i agree, wynn brings nothing to the table,

by cmypath78 on May 10, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Winn can play either corner outfield position at an above average level

he was never meant to get very many at bats, but a defensive outfield of Gardner, Granderson, and Winn from left to right is pretty darn impressive.

Hopefully he can just hold the fort until he can head back to the bench and his defensive sub role.

by Lord Duggan on May 10, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

well then , i say again, get him back to the bench, a AAA player couldn’t do much worse at the plate & he can be a late inning Defensive replacement like you say

by cmypath78 on May 10, 2010 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not like

Granderson was lighting things before he got injured either. I think the Yanks desperately need to make a move for an outfielder, a good one.

by david d on May 11, 2010 4:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but damn, swing at a good pitch, a 14 year veteran should have a little better plate discipline with RISP. What is timeframe on Grandy, from this point? Park has been
on the DL since mid-April as well?

by Great Gatsby on May 11, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

How quickly we forget

that a few nights ago Winn hit a three-run home run to win a game. He’s weak as a righty hitter, but we’re going to have to live w/it for a while. There are no good options at AAA.

by Ed Valentine on May 11, 2010 7:19 AM EDT up reply actions

There's this guy named David Winfree

You might’ve heard of him. Girardi thought about putting him on the 40 man. He’s hitting .290 with 4 hrs. Sure, his k/BB ratio isn’t that good, but neither was Granderson’s. He is a very good option. Plus, he’s gotta be better in the field than Thames, and he eats up lefties like he does.

by goyanks69 on May 11, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

What is the David Winfree

lovefest, why are yo so excited about him? They called up Golson before him,
that should tell you he is not that close in the pecking order right?

by Great Gatsby on May 11, 2010 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

He’s not on the 40 man.
They’d have to DFA or 60-day DL someone to get him to New York.

i have a big problem with the computers or the retards who makeout the schedules… we play @ boston to start the season, then go there this past weekend, then the next 3 series all in NY, then end the season in boston, WTF…it will be a happy day when that man is gone

by cmypath78 on May 10, 2010 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

so that the majority of sox/yankees games fall on weekends…and so that the yankees have to travel

by cmypath78 on May 10, 2010 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

the schedule is more than a little goofy, I have more of a problem with the fact, that every year we routinely play about three Sunday night games in Boston, then travel, in this case to Detroit
which means they get to their hotel about 5AM…How come we rarely see Boston play a Sunday night game in NY, always see the Mets/Yankees of course. As Travis said they looked “flat”
last night, I call it sleepwalking thru a game.

I agree! jorge seems a little too ‘bleh’. I mean he is part of the Core Four, so he’s good and everything, but almost at times like he’s got something stuck up his butt. wasn’t he pissed last year when AJ gave him “pie time”? Thank God for AJ and Swish and Cervelli et al for bringing some life back into this team. Jorge is very flat in my opinion.

We can look at our off season moves

for the situation we find ourselves in. Each one has, to this point, proven to be terrible “investments”.

by david d on May 11, 2010 4:19 AM EDT up reply actions

which situation?

being 21-10? .5 out of first?

look, if Pettitte goes last night, it’s probably a win. Mitre’s the spot-starter for a reason.

by Travis G on May 11, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I was referring to

our “problem” spots. Each one of them is a result of the brilliant off season moves Cashman made. Vazquez…Johnson…Grandy…and the fact that we’re scrambling to put a decent outfield together.

by david d on May 12, 2010 4:27 AM EDT up reply actions

to this point...

they haven’t been terrible. They haven’t mattered is what they’ve done.

When all these guys come back or get back on track, cuz they are vets and will trend back towards their norm…that’s a good thing that will carry the Yanks.

Even Jeter’s off on a slowish start.

The team’s winning.

Anything bad that happens in April and May, doesn’t matter as long as they ain’t done for the year.

And it especially doesn’t matter if the team just keeps winning.

But by all means, focus on the offseason still.

Just keep winning

Today was just one of those games where we didn't get the hit with RISP...

…that said is also showcases the offseason deals in terms of what we picked up to fill the ‘Damon/Matsui’ hole and it doesn’t look that good right now. Winn has his moments, but they are too few and far between. Thames may hit lefties, but his defense is horrid an borders on insane to allow him to run around in the outfield. With Granderson on the DL it really shows how bad our LF platoon is outside of Gardner. It also doesn’t help that Matsui and Damon are off to good starts and AJax is showing that he was indeed a top talent. But when we basically hand away good talent and pick up the likes of Javy, Thames and NJ, what does that say about our choices? Were the deals motivated by money or did we actually think we were going to be that much better with these pieces? Just throwing that out there.

by Bronx_Booyah on May 11, 2010 2:38 AM EDT reply actions

wait

the only reason Thames/Winn are playing so much is Grandy’s injury. we were rather lucky last year that neither Matsui or Damon got hurt (both being 35). Grandy is 29. he’s played 140+ each of the previous 4 years. he had a fluke injury. it sucks but he’ll be back in a few weeks.

the thing we really can’t lose are the starters. we have a great record bc of CC, AJ, Phil and Andy. we saw last night what happens when one goes down.

Give me a break

1. He always swings early in the count … he has his entire career. 2. He hit two absolute rockets last night, and Ordonez made a great play in the 8th. 3. Players have slumps sometimes, that’s just how it is.

by Ed Valentine on May 11, 2010 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

if you watched the game

you’’d see many hard hit balls being hit right at people. Jeets is on the ball. He’s not even slumping, he’s getting unlucky with the placement of his hits

by FreeBradshaw on May 11, 2010 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

"little things"

There were too many “little things” that contributed to the loss. A-Rod’s error was one, although understandable. His caught-stealing came on a borderline balk move — the pitcher’s leg may have gone behind the 1b-mound line, which obligates the pitcher to go home. But I could not understand why Gardy did not steal 2nd base with the lead run when Winn was at bat in the 8th. That would have influenced pitch selection and forced the infield all the way in. On at least 2 pitches Laird could not have even made a throw. When we do lose, it’s usually an accumulation of small mistakes as opposed to being outclassed. This was a frustrating example, although (Lord willing) the team should bounce back. Robertson was much better and Joba was excellent. Let’s hope that Vasquez does better tonight.
