Matsui, Hall of Fame?
I found this from Jeff Erikson, rotowire.com, in the "Charging the Mound" comments:
"Should Hideki Matsui’s(notes) Japanese career numbers be considered when vetting his name for potential Hall of Fame consideration? His numbers in MLB alone won’t stand up, but because he collected his 1,000th major league hit on Monday, I started thinking about his place in history. He had 332 homers and a .304/.413/.582 line in Japan before joining the Yankees in 2003, entered this year with a .292/.370/.482 line in the majors and now has 144 major league homers. His MLB resume is short on awards, though – just two All-Star games and last year’s World Series MVP. Chances are he won’t get in, but should he be in the conversation?"
To which Chris Liss replies, "I’m a big Matsui fan – always thought he was a very tough out on the Yankees. And he has a 55,000-tape porn collection, which should weigh in his favor. But I don’t think he’ll make it"

He should
Not get into the H.O.F. The only way he would get in is if you do combine his Japan numbers with his numbers here. The competition in Japan is not as good as here in MLB so I dont see how you could do that.
I think the Negro Leaguers at least set a precedent.
Granted it’s “The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.”
If he were to get in, it would need to be by the skin of his teeth and/or the Veteran’s Committee.

yeah most of them never played an inning in the MLB and the one's who did are recognized

Definitely not Hall of Fame...
but I think some sort of recognition could be in order for Japanese players who make their mark in MLB (Matsui, Ichiro, Igawa). Maybe make a section of the Hall that commemorates successful foreign pitchers that were able to bring their game to MLB.
Ichiro
Is a first ballot hall of famer. Anyone that says differently is simply wrong.

He is already a HOFer in Japan
And has been for a minute. I have thought a lot about this and its probably best he stays a HOFer over there only. It would be too confusing and probably open up the gate for conversations about an international hall and other ridiculousness. Igawa should probably go into the HOF right now for being one of the biggest busts in MLB history.
Global domination, bizarre experiments on youth, rigging elections to benefit our cause, what you call the Evil Empire, I CALL HOME!!!!
Ain't gonna happen
Perhaps 10, 15, 20, … years down the road when a dozen foreign countries have established pro leagues and the MLB is playing in a true “world” series would you begin considering someone with merits like Matsui.
I don't think that will happen.
It will ruin the tradition of our American pastime. Plus, all of the good players would still come to the MLB, more money. Thats really what we have the WBC for.

Biggest Matsui fan there is
And it’s not even close. Maybe if he started his career in the USA.

Pete
If Pete Rose reads this he will probably go play a single game in Japan on the hope it gets him into somebody’s HOF!
