Notes from Game 1

When the Yankees and Red Sox meet there are always plenty of fireworks.

CC Sabathia was not happy after letting a four-run lead slip away Sunday night.

"I think I had good stuff, I just nibbled too much," Sabathia said. "Early in the game I was still strike one, right there. Later in the game I’m trying to throw down and away and I’m missing down. I just think I nibbled a little too much and got behind and got in hitters counts. It’s a tough lineup to try to pitch to when you’re in hitters counts.

"It’s a fine line and today I definitely screwed it up,"

My take: The big lefty historically struggles early in the season. There are 161 games to go, and I'm not going to worry about it.

  • I'm sure the Jorge Posada bashers will be out in force today after his key 7th inning passed ball. Jorge has never been a great defensive catcher, and we are just going to have to live with him having more and more difficulty handling pitches that are not where he expects them to be. We don't have to like it. I think we do have to get used to it.
  • Curtis Granderson homered in first at-bat and made a nice catch in center field. Still, he left four runners on base and was not happy with his Yankee debut.
  • Interesting to note that the double steal which resulted in Brett Gardner stealing home was not a called play. Gardner said he just reacted when he saw Derek Jeter take off for second base.

Obviously the loss trumps all good things

but I thought the team as a whole looked good. I think Robbie’s gonna excel in that 5-hole, as well as NJ in that 2-hole.

Jeet can be even more aggressive now, cuz while even Damon got on base a lot…Damon cannot get on like NJ. Either Jeter or NJ are gonna be on before the 3-4 get up. That’s just GOING to happen.

How can one be made at Grandy for doing what he did? I mean..first game of his Yank career, he’s in a clutch spot….I didn’t expect him to come through.

As for Jorge…he giveth, he taketh away. People seem to always remember his past balls…and rightfully so, but at the plate…Jorgey’s still out of everyone on the team (Yes..including A-Rod and Jeter) the guy who I feel most comfortable with at the plate in a clutch situ.

I just know Jorge’s getting some sort of hit.

I’m done with the Gardner bashing. I really think he’s gonna be a problem in that 9 hole.

CC looked good for a dude who usually starts off slow. No way am I worried about him, at all.

Girardi needs to let the brakes off Robertson. Now.

You confused me
I’m done with the Gardner bashing. I really think he’s gonna be a problem in that 9 hole.

You really think he’s a problem, so you’ll keep bashing; or, you’re done with Gardner bashing, and you don’t think he’ll be a problem.

Ahh!

Gotcha. I agree, so long as he gets on base at a .330-.350 clip.

yea i didnt feel too bad about that game

I mean it was a loss, and BESIDES no pitcher being able to escape unscathed you cant fault the offense, 7 runs is gonna win you the game 9 times out of 10 with our pitching.

Chan Ho Park looks like the shit was scared right out of him, good to throw him right out there though so he knows what to expect. Overall it was a good game to watch and all our hitters look pretty good.

No confidence in Park

He might have pitched well in the spring but when Ace is ready we better not see Park in that sport…

That HR pitch to Pedroia wasn’t actually a bad pitch. It was a ball inside and a little high and he put a good swing on it.

Gardner

I am still not a fan of him and I still think that he has more value on the bench than in the lineup. But he played a good game last night. Would have rather had him on the bench last night to PR for NJ instead Winn.

by imyrick on Apr 5, 2010 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

The double steal wasn't a called play?

WOW!! That’s sweet reflexes right there. Gardner’s definitely an excellent base runner, and not just because of his speed. I’d personally like to see him starting a lot more games than he did last season (which he probably will), because a full season of him on the basepaths could be scary.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

The problem is him getting on the bases.

I dont see him having too many games like he had last night. But last night he was excellent

LOSS

A loss is a loss and we should never accept it. CC looked good but Joe stayed with him too long. As for the rest, we’ll see how things go. Right now, I feel lousy.

by jimwarren on Apr 5, 2010 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

That's right

Guess it was opening night for the manager, CC was leaking by the end of the fifth.
First start of the year, you shouldn’t expect 105-110 pitches. At the very least, take him out after he opens the bottom of sixth with a leadoff walk to that pain in the arse, Pedroia….but it is game one, move on..

by Great Gatsby on Apr 5, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

a loss is a loss..

This is a marathon not a sprint…we saw lot of things from the offense. The pitching was bad tho. Also can’t fault posada since it wasn’t like matte was exactly hitting his spots.

Yanks start 2010 in last place

that was atough one, I went to bed thinking the Yankees had it won with a 5-1 lead.

Midle Relief

To me the Yanks lost that game, the red sox didnt win it, Again the middle relief let us down, when you put 7 runs up that needs to be a win, that being said I think we have a strong line up. I also think the red sox line up will fade as the season goes on.

CC allowed 5 runs, though 1 was an inherited runner Houdini couldn’t keep at third.
I think Joe G overmanages in close spots, especially knowing he has the off day today. But the real weight of the loss falls on CC.

It's still a baseball park

That both teams played it. So saying the Red Sox have an advantage in Fenway is like saying the Yankees have the advantage of high home runs in Yankee Stadium. There’s no way you can blame the loss on the stadium dimensions.

Well sox player are more used. To playing the dimensions and knowing how the ball trvaels in the outfield and etc. Also I’m saying sox players benefit from the monster cuZ the team looks for players that thrive on the wall, much like how the yanks got player that can use the short porch. There’s a reason why guys like pedoria has a .164 better .ops at home. Than one the road, .130 slugging and twice as many hrs.

That

homer was an out in any other ballpark, but not the ballpark last night. Hey, I live 50 miles west of Boston, been there at least 75 times in my life, that wall is not even
310 FT. down the line, trust me, but they all count.

I have to say, this hurts a lot

Especially with the damn off day today, why!

In the long run, we weren’t gonna sweep them, folks, the Sox are a good team (goes to put needles through eyes). But in the long run, taking 1 of 3 isn’t horrible if we sweep them back in NY. Today is gonna be mad annoying though, the memory of yesterday still fresh.

Game time? Jorge bash. Nothing we didn't already know, WTF??

Man, looked at the box but didn’t see an official time. Had to go over the play-by-play for that one as I was sawing logs well before the finish.

We all have known for years that Jorge can’t catch, I also think he’s even worse at calling pitches, sure did look good with the stick though. Seems like a tough call for Joe and most of the bloggers, but I’d give up his bat and wonderful baserunning skills for any .200 hitter who can catch and call a good game. Yanks are gonna score. with or without him, but they are gonna give up a lot of runs without an adequate backstop.

Don’t think we learned anything new, we already knew that Jorge can’t catch but still hasn’t lost the swing, Park is the last middle reliever on this team and hopefully won’t be called on too often, Jete just gets more hits (Tied Appling for 48th all-time), NJ got on twice, Gardner’s assets do not include power or throwing arm, and Grandy is a talented young player who’s more of all-or-nothing, he needs to learn how to hit/ drive in runners from third, etc. Didn’t see but I can only assume from the box and the # of pitches that Jaba was less than stellar.

WTF Joe? Did Robertson overdo it by throwing 6 pitches? WTF Joe? Chan Ho???? WTF? We all know Ho’s the last middle reliever on this roster and he’s only in NY ‘cuz the Yanks are worried that Melancon won’t get the consistent work in that role. I’m all for keeping your bullpen rested, but 6 pitches? Even 1 more out from Robertson, 1 from Marte, 4 from Jaba and you get to Mo. This loss is squarely on Girardi. Yanks are likely to win despite poor management, but up 5-1 it’s also time to pull Jorge ASAP. That’ll require a third catcher on the bench, Montero of course as he can handle that role and the Marcus Thames role. Who says he needs to be at AAA “learning” to catch? Why don’t they just work on his catching before games when all the 35-something Yanks are doing their water aerobics? He’s 20, I don’t think practicing baseball will tire him out??? Girardi scoreboard…he’s one full game behind where he should be.

by steelerwheeler on Apr 5, 2010 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

It’s only one game and only one loss, BUT, here is my take and some early grading on a few.
Grade “F”. CC blows a 4 run lead but he will be fine. I get tired of hearing though, he’s a late starter. That’s BS. That’s what spring training is for. To get ready.

Grade “F-” . Bullpen. They are really scary.

Grade “F”. Cano. A great player with all the talent in the world but the same lazyass as always. Last night he hit a line drive over the rightfielder’s head, off the wall, and was “held” to a single. Why? Because he watched the ball and started trotting to first base instead of hustling. Any kind of a bobble, misplay, whatever, and he had an easy double.. Even the announcers were all over him for about 10 minutes. He did that all last year. Why does he do it? Because Girardi let’s him get away with it. He is the ONLY Yankee that doesn’t hustle. I’m sick of his attitude.

Grade “F”. Posada. He is a defensive liability and showed it last night and why he will cost the Yankees wins this year. He let in the game winning run because he simply couldn’t catch a chest high fast ball. No excuses. Offensively, grade “A”. He should be a permanent DH and they never should have let Molina go.

Grade “F”. Girardi. How many relievers did he use last night, 4, 5, 6? I lost count. Last year Joba was on a pitch count. Now it looks like every reliever is on a pitch count. And, he either can’t, or has no interest, in making Cano hustle.

IMO, everyone else was pretty much right on and I think Granderson had a good opener. First time in pinstripes, season opener, in NY, good job. And Chan ho Park? He doesn’t even look like a Yankee.
These are just 1st game comments and really no big deal. Just some simple observations. However, what I do see as problems are Girardi, the chip on Cano’s shoulder, and I’ll take a wait and see attitude with the bullpen. Trust me. I love the Yankees and have been a fan for over 50 years and always will be. I’ll tell you this. Some of you probably never saw Billy Martin but he NEVER would have put up with Cano’s bullsh-t. He even took Reggie Jackson out of right field in the middle of an inning for not hustling on the prior play! That’s a little over the top but it’s true.

by rocket109 on Apr 5, 2010 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Its a good thing they got 161 more game to get those F's straightened ou huh...

you know, cuz basically every single thing you graded was a problem last year you know right?

…I gotta feeling I’ma say this a lot this season…but “you know we won a WS with that right”?

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 5, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It's one game

lets all just calm down, we did start out 0-8 against Boston last year, I’m not worried about it well I do worry about Chan Ho Park but he won’t decide our season. If Cano went for 2nd on that hit he would have been thrown out and if you’re going to be credited with a hit you might as well be on base after it. Does Cano drive me mad sometimes, yes but I’ll take his laziness for the raw talent he possesses. Posada made a mistake, big deal, if Jose Molina was the every day catcher we’d have a huge hole in the line up, and the pitch by Marte was supposed to be low and away not high and inside. As soon as I saw Posada miss the catch I knew everyone would blow this out of proportion, is he a great defensive catcher, no, but when has he been, as long as he hits Posada is one of the most valuable players on the team. CC had a bad couple innings, big deal he’ll make up for it in July/August.

by andrew21 on Apr 5, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude STFU with the Cano bullshit.

Did you actually watch the hit? It was a lazer that one hopped the wall. Drew had it played perfectly, it bounced right off the wall into his hand and he turned and fired a strike to 2b. Robinso Cano is not fast. He likely would have been thrown out at 2b.

Then you’d probably bitch about that too, how he lollygagged to 2b and got thrown out.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Does Francona get an "F" too?

He used 4 relievers as well.

I agree with only one point

Posada should be DH’ing EVERY game. He’s a switch hitter, perfect. I said this the whole off season. Cervelli is a much better catcher, don’t need Molina.

My problem

was, why did Joe go and bring in Park in the seventh? That didn’t make any sense to me. The guy is here for middle/long relief. He’s not here to pitch the seventh and eighth innings of a close Yankees Red Sox game. Especially in his Yankee debut. I wanted to see either Robertson start that inning, or Joba to start it and use a Joba/Marte combo to somehow get to Rivera (even if Mo has to get more than 3 outs since there is an off day). I didn’t get the Park move, and it definitely backfired. Park was terrible, and as much as there is to blame on CC for giving up the lead, or Posada for the passed ball, Park was the biggest reason they lost the game. When the team gets a lead back that quickly, you can’t give it up just as quickly. It needs to be held, especially when you look at the end of the Red Sox bullpen.

It wasn’t an awful opening day. The offense looked great. 2 HR (3 in any other park- A-Rod was robbed by that wall). But the relievers couldn’t hold it down. The Yankees bullpen lost this game. Now they just have to pick it up and go get them tomorrow. It’s a long year.

by nyyrocks29 on Apr 5, 2010 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe he was trying to give HO Park a taste of what its like to be in one of these Yanks Pissants games?

In a game like opening night…in a game that is basically about as meaningful as a July game against the Orioles…that’s what you do.

You see what you got.

Park obviously wet his pants…but he got a taste. So rub his nose in it and see if he learns.

As we saw last year..keeing your relievers fresh goes a LOOOOOONG way. We have no Bruney now..so whatever the hell Bruney was, that’s gonna be Park.

i'll give it to them for now, they did take advantage on our weak middle

but it’s a long season and there are plenty of chances to beat them red sox and that hateful wall

How long was that 5th Inning?

Hey Guys this game didn’t end the way I would have liked and the way it should have. Hopefully, we can get the next two and make it a 2-1 beginning of the year. They are all shaking off the rust, even though last nights game was awesome.

Go New York Giants!!
