The starting line-up and roster
Well the season opener is around the corner. Yankees seem to have a few minor questions about this team. Looks like the biggest decisions are: Who is fifth starter? Who plays center? Do Yankees keep two lefties in the pen? Is Thames the fifth outfielder or is a trade eminent?
I am still wondering about starting line-up? I see the same starters as had been reported. But, I would like to see A-rod and Tex switched. A-rod has had a very good spring and is swinging the bat like of old. He is driving the ball to right center again and not just pulling the ball. Tex is having what most would call a typical good spring. Tex has had a history of slow starts. For whatever the reason is Tex starts heating up in May. A-rod has had some incredible Aprils. Here is what I would like to see the starting line-up look like on opening day:
Jeter - SS
Johnson - DH
A-rod - 3B
Texeria - 1B
Cano - 2B
Posada - C
Granderson - CF
Swisher - RF
Gardner - LF
This would be a much better line-up and would effect the team very little if the two were switched back later this year. So what are your thought ?

switch Arod and Tex. Don't fix what ain't broken.
The reason they cut Hoffman is because they thought Thames would prove more useful. So no, I don’t think he’ll be traded.
Section 203 Row 15 Seat 1
agreed.
I’d be very surprised if they did that.
On paper it seems to make some sense. In reality…the order last year won a WS.
Lets stick with the empirical evidence instead of wet dreams.

I do not get cutting Hoffman and releasing Gaudin?
They just gave away Bruney who yr to yr is off on and this was an on yr.And Gaudin can help a major league team when injuries happen and the dog days wear on.I’m missing something, please do tell,I have been engaged in the Academy and can’t keep up like usual.
Oh boy I can't wait, there is going to be a Ho Park in the bullpen.I wonder if we can use the bullpen phone to order condoms with our pizza that will sit next to the keg?I already bought my spurs and chaps.Nevermind my wife found out about the bullpen, who's the Judas?

gaudin was making 3 mil
and didnt have a spot. so why not dump him and eat the 750k we had to puy him to release hik and give his roster spot to mitre who pitched ok and is making like 850k instead of 3 mil

you act like giving Bruney away is a bad thing....
I think Mitre made Gaudin expendable. They’re basically similar players…middling talents that can steal a game here and there.
But Mitre’s cheaper and has better stuff, so I can see that one.
Hoffman I dunno…but I guess they took a flier. I ain’t making excuses for the Yanks..I have no clue what they’re up to lately.

We'll see Grandy
in the two-hole soon, either because Johnson gets injured or when Girardi figures out Grandy is not going to get ANY good pitches hitting seventh. Too much talent to waste putting him there. Also, how do all of you feel about Hughes strarting over Joba? If you really thought Joba was going to win this spot, you were delusional. Why so many of you say last year was a waste I don’t understand. We won the Series, who cares if a lot of time was given to Joba to become a starter? It IS obvious he’s better from out of the bullpen and we shouldn’t diminish the importance of having a strong bullpen. If Hughes falters, I think he’ll be left in there to take his lumps. I still believe both will be starting due to injury, etc., unless Joba just becomes too damn good out of the pen to move him again, in which case Mitre may get thrown into the rotation.
Hughes had better numbers out of the bullpen.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

The only thing obvious about the Joba situation
is the Yankees didn’t give him full time to show he’s a starter. Shittier pitchers have become better starters over time…but Joba must go to the bullpen.
Why? Who knows.
If a starter like say…Randy Johnson, was in this situation for the Yankees…he’d never have been a starter. Never.
Its a shame.
What teh point of saying last year was a waste is because the Yankees took ample care of Joba to ensure he could be a starter.
They didn’t give him enough time to show if he’s a starter…you think that….well, there’s your delusion (most who are delusional…don’t realize it and feel others are..FYI there…)
Joba didn’t get a chance, its a shame…now we could be wasting a promising SP career by putting him in the bullpen……basically giving up on him.
Hughes didn’t earn this based on less then 20 innings pitching against ST scrubs. Again, delusional if you think he earned it based on that.
Regarding prospects, I’ll never take the Yankees seriously again…cuz they obviously don’t give a rats ass as far as developing major league talent.

If you look at it that way
then Rivera didn’t get a chance either. They let him have a FEW starts for ONE year and he has worked out pretty well. Joba hasn’t been the same since he hurt his arm. I’ve stated before, I would like to see both he and Hughes starting, and I think that may still happen, but I do think Joba’s more suited out of the pen. And the comment about developing talent, I’m with ya there. I know I get a lot of grief from you guys about it, but that’s how i felt about them for trading AJ and Melky. Also, I guess Girardi is delusional too???
judging by this...

I agree, MO didn’t get a chance. It turned out good…but like he’s always been..MO was basically a one pitch pitcher.
Joba is not, that’s why he’s not suited for the bullpen.
As for trading AJ, I agree…yet, that’s a minor league player. Joba and Melky are ML players.
Melky has had 4 seasons of basically unopposed starting in CF. He couldn’t beat out Brett Gardner….I’d say Melky’s situation is what I would’ve wanted for Joba.
Give the man time..4 seasons would’ve been nice. Put him in the rotation…leave it.
Leave it alone..it worked with Jeter and Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte. Stick teh young kid in the lineup, and leave him.
If he maxes out to merely an average player..like Melky, then OK do something else (trade, backup…)
The thing with Joba is I like Hughes probably more so…always liked the Phrancise. But they’re giving up on Joba, and it makes me sick. Its extremely nearsighted.

Joba and Hughes both starting
meant no need to trade for Vazquez and his $11 million salary.
So it would seem somebody did not want to take the risk they they could both start and help the Yankees win the series in 2010. Or they wanted depth.
I might have taken that risk, but if wrong, Plan B would have been Mitre, Gaudin, AA or trade for someone. None really great options.
I expect Andy will be done after this year. Maybe Vazquez too. After a year in the pen can Joba come back and be a starter? I think yes, unless he is invaluable there.
On the prospect issue – Yankees always want to win NOW and are reluctant to let a young player learn on the job if it can cost them a WS. Cano did it. Wang did it. Melky did it. Before them – who? Yeah, they trade away prospects.
Roster Rant
Vazquez will be done? What a bunch of crap. He is not retiring and neither is Andy. This is getting almost as annoying as ‘I played bad because I was hurt’. What are these players talking about? Pettite has said he was going to retire every year since 1996 and Vazquez apparently wants to join the bandwagon. The bullpen is a very important part of a team. Has everyone forgot? I hope people realize it wasn’t just A-Rod coming back that got us on track. All those come-from-behind and late inning wins weren’t just the offense. Anybody remember 1996? I am personally stoked to have Joba and Mariano in the pen. This is flucking awesome. I think he is a better pitcher then Hughes but I also can’t wait to have Joba come in after the sixth in crucial games and Mariano closing the door. More comeback wins! Robbie and CGrand should be switched indefinetly and even though Tex has awful Aprils, batting him cleanup instead of third won’t really help things with this lineup. The bottom of our order could look pretty bad if these guys don’t pan out (worse case scenario). I am not a big fan of Thames and after this spring I’m really freaked out. I predict a release here sometime before mid season. Hoffman must really feel like crap with this guy making the cut over him. Thames will be a decent fill in for the Pirates. It won’t be carrying two lefties in the pen, much to my disgruntlment, but everyone calmed me down a little (and so did having Joba in there…) Joba is, never was, never will be, and never would’ve been Randy Johnson. Come on, talk about hype. No one was as hyped as Melky. What a steal Vazquez is for us. Melky was basically the team mascot the last couple of years. He hit a couple of game winners last year because pitchers would serve it up to him thinking he was easy compared to the rest of the HOF sluggers and he would crank it in the bleachers. Austin Jackson? Give me a break, does anyonre realize he walked 40 times and struck out 120+ last year in AAA, has very little power, is a lousy baserunner and the Tigers want to bat him leadoff. A joke and another great move. GO YANKS IN 2010!!

Oh- and we had a great closer in the pen who wasn't a 'one pitch' guy
