The Distance between Gehrig and #2 is huge

my others:

2. Bill Terry
3. Hodges
4. Mattingly
5. Keith Hernandez

Johnny Mize might fit in there somewhere. With a great 7 years, Tex could climb to #2.

Tino

Most underrated player in the history of baseball

by Somewhere in the Swamps of Jersey on Mar 24, 2010 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

Umm Tino doesn't really belong on a list of the best NY 1b to ever play the game.

He played 6 seasons in NY and the last two weren’t particularly noteworthy. Yeah, he had a couple of clutch hits and huge playoff homeruns but to put him ahead of these guys is ridiculously dumb.

Don Mattingly
14 years.in NY
 .307/.358 /.471 1 MVP, 8x All Star, 9x Gold Glove, 4x Silver Slugger
222 Career HR

Gil Hodges
12 yrs in NY
.276/.366/.496 7x All Star
212 HR

Tino Martinez
6 years in NY
.279 /.348/.488 1 All Star 1 Silver Slugger
175 HR

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Yeah Gehrig

This one isn’t even a discussion really haha. The discussion begins with #2 here I suppose.

agreed

There isnt a question that Gehrig will be #1

No Bye Bye Balboni?

:-) There were a lot of first baseman through the years but like mentioned, not even close to Gehrig.

I'm sorry

But if Gehrig doesn’t get 100% of the votes, I’ll start having doubts about NY fans. I’d like to go on a rant here about how great Gehrig was…but what’s the point? It’s Lou, hands down.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Has to be Gehrig

Lifetime BA .340, hit over 150 RBIs eight times (over 170 three times). Lifetime OPS+ of 179 (Mattingly’s best one-year OPS+ was 161). The evidence is overwhelming.

Balboni and Sal Fasano are:

a) separated at birth;
b) very close brothers; or
c) identical cousins

Number One, Hands Down

You know who gets my vote.

Steve Balboni?

He surely ranks right up there with John “The Hammer” Milner.

Mattingly Is My Favorite Player Of All Time But...

this is an insult to Lou Gehrig even having this discussion.

Chris Chamblish...

had the most exciting HR I ever remember, great memories for an 8 year old up and coming fan seeing the field covered with fans, reading it took forever for Chamblish to circle the bases and that the umps don’t know for sure if he ever crossed home. A scene like that will never happen again thanks to crazies with knives and rich fans/corporations in box seats. Get rid of all the FA, corporations, and high priced seats. Best seats go to all the dad’s and sons bringing their gloves to the game. Like that’ll ever happen….well, I’m up in Rochester (AAA/twins) and is there isn’t much better than a warm summer evening, a good seat, and my son and I watching quality professional ballplayers in a 9,000 seat ballpark. Do yourselves a favor, turn off the tube and get out to see some live non major league ball games with your kids/friends/family/self whatever. Let me know how if goes….

by steelerwheeler on Mar 25, 2010 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

I thought of Chambliss as well, but if you look just at the numbers, they're not that great.

He usually hit .270-.290, and fewer than 20 home runs, although he played great defense.
