Mauer for Posada and Rivera - would you do the trade?
I was thinking to myself. The Twins just got a bad blow today when they announced Nathan is likely done for the year (and maybe part of next year). That got me thinking....
If the Twins offered Mauer (with a sign and trade) for Posada and Rivera. Would you do it? I dont think so but its an interesting discussion.
Of course all parties would have to wave clauses etc. But for arguments sake lets say all are waived and Mauer agrees to a 7 year contract.
Would you do it?
Long term lock up from the best catcher is tempting but then again, the Yanks have some good catchers in the system (Cervelli, Romine, Montero). But none are guaranteed to be close to Mauer, an already sure thing. They could then be great trade bait.
Secure the future?
From the Yanks point of view I dont think they would do it. It diminishes their short term chance at more titles (and they are icons).
From the Twins point of view do you trade your MVP because you might not sign him anyway and secure a better shot at winning the this and next season in the new ballpark?

I wouldn't do that deal
But, if the Twins were willing to trade Joe Mauer, Kirby Puckett, the AstroTurf from the Metrodome, AND 1,000 of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes for Francisco Cervelli, I’d think about it.
You'd think about trading CERVELLI????
NO person, stadium or lakes is worth even a quarter of what CERVELLI is worth!!! lol
Well, considering that they’d be re-animating a dead guy (sorry Kirby) you’d have to at least think about it, right?
Ever seen the movie Re-Animater?
That would be one scary Kirby Pucket,I would definetly do that trade just to see who and what the dude would eat.
Oh boy I can't wait, there is going to be a Ho Park in the bullpen.I wonder if we can use the bullpen phone to order condoms with our pizza that will sit next to the keg?I already bought my spurs and chaps.

Just the idea of seeing MO in another uniform...
would make me sick. I wouldn’t trade MO for anyone…yea, that includes Mauer.
As for the Twins side, I don’t think closer will prove to be all that drastic of a deal for them. Nathan’s great of course, but I think they can win that division anyway.

This would never happen because the Twins aren't retarded
quite the opposite, in fact.
But Joe Mauer is entering his prime, and Mo and Posada are WELL past their primes. This is a no brainer.
It would torture me to see Mo play for the Twins, but it would give me equal delight to watch Joe Mauer put on the pinsripes.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Do it
The minute Jorge and Mariano get to Twinkyville they will retire so they do not have to wear another uniform. Then they can resign when they get back, the Twins are to foolish to guard against that in the agreement, need proof? They got Carl Pavano on there roster.

Bittersweet
Like you said there is no way that a trade like this would ever happen but it is interesting to look at….
As a die hard Yankee it would be hard to see Mo in any other uniform but pinstripes, almost as bad as even imaging Jeet in anything else. But I disagree that Mo is in the downward spiral. Last year was one of his best seasons. Posada on the other hand i wouldnt mind seeing him go he hasnt been anything to write home about in years. The Yanks do have many prospects that have the potential to be great, but again not proven like Mauer is.
Being from the north up here and being a Yanks fan it would be bittersweet to see Mauer in Stripes just because of how everyone up here is when it comes to him. They think he isnt like the rest of baseball and would never leave the twins for money. Which face it hes not! Hes just like everyone else and wants the bucks!!!
Of course I would do this deal
and whomever was behind the deal in Minnesota would be shot.
Umm, yes. In a heartbeat.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
With all respect, this is a very unrealistic hypothetical
I can’t imagine the Twins trading Mauer, who is in his prime as the best hitting and one of the best fielding catchers in baseball, for Jorge and Rivera, who I love, but who are nearing the end of their career.
No
Posada I could deal if it involved getting Mauer. However, NEVER trade Mariano Rivera. The guy is a true Yankee. About as true a Yankee as you can be. He is automatic in the ninth inning, which is something I guarantee the Yankees will miss when he retires. You don’t trade that away.
Rivera’s job may be one inning at a time, but he makes it look so easy. And he’s so automatic for so many years that we’ve gotten used to it and expected it. But you will really appreciate it if/when Rivera is gone. Rivera’s value is irreplaceable, while the Yankees could live without Mauer. I mean, they already have one of the best players in baseball locked up to a 10 year deal. Do they need another huge deal? I’d rather stick with what we’ve got, and let Montero hit 45 HR a year by the time 2013-2014 rolls around.
Anyone who says no is either overly sentimental or silly.
In reality, relievers are overvalued. I’m not saying Mo isn’t the best who’s ever played his position, he pretty certainly is. However, Jorge is certainly on his way out and probably won’t catch more than 110 games this year. It would kill me just as much as the next Yankee fan to see Mo pitch in any other uniform too, but Mauer’s production in the short time he’s been in the league matches up against any catcher in history. If we had him for 7 years, it’d be absolutely extraordinary.
Of course, this deal would literally never ever happen. As a matter of fact, I’ll say Sergio Mitre will win the Cy Young award before this deal happens.
overly sentimental.
Admit it…you’d be sick to see MO in different uniform.
Hypothetically, MLB 2010 on PS3 wise…yea, of course. I could close 50 games with Albala-dingdong in that game..but Jorge has Alzheimer’s by July.
And of course it would never happen. Minny’s GM would be an idiot.
And 90% of Yankee fans would simultaneously get a nervous breakdown and heart attack from the excitement of getting Mauer and anxiety of seeing MO in non-Yankee pinstripes.

I would definitely be sick.
I actually play MLB 2k10 which is far inferior to The Show, but I only have a 360. But I created a shortstop in my player and in his second season put up a line of .403/.485/.792…
So yeah, videogame-wise, Albala-dingdong could certainly close out 50 games with a WHIP south of 1.

How about not?
Since if we get him, it’ll be via free agency.

Posada talks openly about being near the end, Rivera is 40.
If the Yankees did this deal, they would have an enormous upgrade at catcher, use Chamberlain or Hughes as closer for 8 or 10 years (with any luck), and be far better off. The Twins would get Posada for probably one year, and Rivera for not much more, especially if the Twins didn’t contend. Why would the Twins even consider this?

no
because of loyalty.
i am very loyal, Posada and Rivera have given everything to the Yanks including pennants.
Mauer belongs in Min and I hope he brings them at least 1 championship during his career.

this would never happen
Posada will probably retire soon, and who knows how long Rivera will stick around. There’s a good chance they can lock Mauer up for a long time, so why would they sacrifice their future for two players who will likely retire soon?
riv
why do not we give em jeter,a rod too are you a red sux fan,or smooking to many doobies
BIG YANKEE FAN,FROM MASS. HAVE TO PUT UP WIYH ALL THESE HOLE SOX FANS
Trade ....
No to Mo …
I would however do Joba, Cervelli for Mauer… And I’d throw in a vintage 1973 Yankees seat cushion that I found in my parent’s attic!

hypothetical trade
Both teams would probably suffer in attendance from fan reaction, which would make it a bad financial trade. Yes, the Twins now need a closer and the Yanks would have choices if Mo were to retire (or be traded for discussion’s sake). But the Twins would have a aging catcher and lose their best hitter. How often would they get to Mo with a lead? Mo is uniquely valuable to the Yanks because they have more leads to protect and more at stake. The Twins might look at Papelbon when he becomes a free agent. Meanwhile, the Yanks would lose their organizational loyalty which one of their best intangible assets. I think this is a bad deal for both teams.
I'm astounded that anyone thinks the Twins would be getting the better of this deal.

How about Chamberlain, Montero & Juan Miranda for Maeur?
I don’t think the Twinkies would want the very high salaries of Posada nor Rivera. The Twins could plug in Joba in the bullpen and Miranda could give them pop either at 1st base or DH.

IIRC
they have a decent 1B already.

A trade for the Twins is possible
If the Twins don’t sign Mauer before opening day or, at the very latest, a little before the trade deadline, they will almost have to trade him. They won’t get any value from Mauer if he reaches free agency. This is why it is absolutely necessary for the Twins to sign him before the season starts. I don’t know if I like this particular trade (Mo and Posada) and I don’t think the Yankees have the prospects to trade for Mauer. This is why the best scenario is for the Twins to sign Joe before the season. I think the redsox have the advantage if it were to come down to a trade and because its unlikely that he will reach free agency, the best thing that can happen is for the Twins to sign Mauer and keep him out of the AL east.
They definitely have the prospects
but Montero would have to be the center piece, and thats obviously something that most Yankees fans wouldn’t want to do. They probably won’t get Mauer for prospects if Montero isn’t one of them.
A lot of good comments...
I don’t believe it would ever happen either.
Chamberlain and Montero in a heartbeat for Mauer….
Miranda would never be part of a deal, the Twins are in great shape at first.
The Red Sox are a real threat to get Mauer in free agency as Martinez contract is up this year if Martinez or Youkillis went down early this year I could see the Sox trying to trade for him as well.
Stat's wise, it's a no-brainer
Mauer will probably have double or tripe the value Mo and Posada will have the next 5 or 7 years. But it’s something that would anger the fan-base and put Cashman in an enourmous pressure-filled situation should Mauer be anything less than god-like (sorry Cervelli), and no way Cashman does something like this to endanger his job and reputation. If we finished 4th last season, you’d know he’d be at least discussing it with the Twins. But we’re coming of a World Series and don’t really need to make a move like this, so I don’t think this has even crossed Cashman’s mind.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

No trade clauses get waived when both sides want out.
Seems silly to speculate this since that is not even remotely close to the case.
Purpose to the post
Although some think this post was crazy, it served its purpose to
1)Make people think. Even if something is not plausible (which was obvious), people can still think about an idea both emotionally and analytically.
2)Gain knowledge of other aspects I didn’t think of
3)Stir interest and comments
This is no different than if we said “How would Babe Ruth do if he were in his prime today?”
Hmmmm…..sounds like another post!
Since Mauer will more than likely be a Met if he leaves...
being a life-long Yankee fan, it’s safe to say THIS would NEVER HAPPEN!!
Danz
Madden's column in today's (3/17) NY Post is on exactly this topic-
If the Twins can’t sign Mauer, would they trade him or let him become a free agent.
He points out that the Yanks have plenty to trade. Both Romine and Montero are regarded as sure major league catchers, and the Twins would want one of them. If he goes free agent, the Yankees and Red Sox would go to the moon to get him.

I'd actually like to see him in Boston
I think he was made for that stadium. He may hit .400 and I would love to see that…as long as we still win the World Series, of course.
