Yankees Trivia
I was bored. It led to a lot of Wikipedia browsing (and some baseball-reference browsing).
1. Which Yankee led the AL in OBP in 1971?
2. Which Yankees team holds the franchise record for most runs scored in a season?
3. Which Yankee pitcher compiled a 120-50 win-loss record over 8 seasons, going to the All-Star game four times and winning 6 World Series rings?
4. Which player led the AL in home runs four years straight (1911-1914) before joining the Yankees in 1916?
5. Which Yankee won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1951?
6. Who holds the Yankees single-season hits record? What year did he accomplish the feat?
7. Which Yankee led the AL in RBI in 1945?
8. What year did the Yankees change their name from the New York Highlanders to the New York Yankees?
9. What Yankee pitcher went 20-4 with a 1.63 ERA en route to winning the AL MVP in 1943?
10. What Yankee set the MLB single season wins record with 41 wins in 1904, but lost the pennant on a wild pitch?

What kind of quiz is this?
I was hoping for more Time Waster © (patent pending)™ FUN quizzes. To be fun, a quiz must avoid any sort of statistical knowledge and instead include stupid, embarrassing, odd, and out of the record- book information.
Nevertheless, you all have indulged my idiocy, so here goes-
1. Only Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson were capable of reaching base on that team, I’ll say Murcer.
2. The 1961 team? I don’t think the pre-expansion teams played enough games, and I don’t recall anyone saying the teams of recent vintage had done it.
3. Had to be someone from the 1949-50’s clubs, either Gomez or Ruffing- I’ll try Gomez
4. No idea. In the 1910s one could lead the league in homeruns with fewer than 15. I’ll take a flyer on Frank Chance. (Home Run Baker is too obvious a choice).
5. If it wasn’t Mickey Mantle, then I give up.
6. I think it was Mattingly in ’86.
7. All the good players were getting shot at in Europe. pass.
8. 1912 or so.
9. Again, pass for the same reason as #7.
10. Sounds like something Jack Chesbro would have done.
How was that? Any correct? Was I warm?
4.

educated guesses:
1. Blomberg
2. One of the late ‘30s teams. I’ll go with 1937.
3. Lefty Gomez?
4. Home Run Baker or King Kong Keller I’d guess.
5. Either Rizzuto or Martin… I’ll go with Scooter,
6. DJ or Joe D. I’ll say DJ in 1999.
7. Joe D was in the war, iirc, so… no idea.
9. Gomez?
Quiz answers
Can all be found rather easily at baseball reference.com and a number of other sites. There’s no need to guess. I looked them all up after my post, but I won’t spoil them for others.
