Just goes to show you ...

No matter how old you are, or how bad you are, if the Yanks had you once and got rid of you, sooner or later they’ll decide that you really are a great player and eventually they’ll hire you back.

I’m glad Billy’s no longer available to manage.

Yankees are totally showing that they think Thames is a great player

….. by extending him a Spring Training invite. DURRRRRRRRRR

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Exactly

They extended Billy Crystal a Spring Training invite for christ sakes

Great. Options are options. If he wins a spot off the bench, I think that’s great. If he accepts time in the minors, that’s good too. If he takes his glove and goes home, that’s fine.

Probably

battles Hoffman for the last roster spot. He’s done some good things, and if he can still hit then why not?

Good signing

be interesting to see what he does in spring training.

I wonder what the contract is…cuz apparently he’s worth 10 years $155 million!!

Oh....

I thought the Yankees thought of him as a ‘great player’?

and you said...

pigs would fly when they sign Thames….here is another from the swammy.. he will hit 22 jacks and have better numbers then swisher.. minus obp

Pain heals, chicks dig scars, glory lasts forever!!!!!!

Considering that Swisher is going to post an OBP around .375 while Thames is going to post around .300, no other numbers really matter.

+1

unless he breaks Barry Bond’s single season HR record or something

by RollingWave on Feb 9, 2010 4:20 AM EST up reply actions

He'll be a RH pinch hitter off the bench

if he makes the team.

Always nice to have a power bat like that off the bench.

Thames

He can hit lefty’s.

I remember last year

When everyone was debating who was better—both offensively and defensively—Swisher or Nady. Of course Nady played for about a week and was out for the season. A similar thing is happening here: Should Gardner play LF every day? Should he platoon with Winn? Should Granderson be platooned? I think these things have a way of working themselves out, whether it’s through an injury or through someone having an unexpectedly good season.
This isn’t to say that Thames is on the same level as Swisher or Nady, but the odds of at least one OF and/or Nick Johnson getting injured this year is quite high. He’ll be a nice addition to our bench, if he does end up getting added to the ML roster.

Haven’t seen this much controversy over a Thames since the Vikings sacked Chertsey Abbey in 870.

I don’t know what’s worse. That joke or that I wikipediaed the River Thames to get a good reference. Probably the joke.

A well earned +1

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

I liked the commentary on the joke. a +1 from me too.

Cashman Is On A Quest To Sign Every Outfielder Left On The Market Not Named Damon

Signing Thames is harmless, I have no problem with it. I dont expect much from him though.

Nothing wrong with it

Thames has respectable numbers against lefties. He can play some LF and fill in at DH when Nick Johnson gets hurt. I would have rather had Rocco Baldelli but this isn’t a bad move. When we have no clear starter in LF the more options the better.

Last year Swish....

Was the questionable/ weak link in the outfield… One year later he is the rock of the outfield. Now we’re happy about minor league contract to thames who we’ve already dumped once. Sheff has to be available on the cheap at this point. A little fear of g-d coming off the bench could come in handy…

by pmpspmp7 on Feb 8, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions

Please no Sheff!

I’d rather see them bring back Dan Pasqua than him! Sheff was and will always be a clubhouse cancer…and what he can do now is not worth the headache a minor league contract would cost. Thames will do as long he is used as a 5th outfielder/right-hand power of the bench and has no more than 100 at bats.

by iamcota35 on Feb 8, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions

You may be onto something...

I can live with Pasqua… hell, im pretty sure he would pay to play… we could then parlay that money into enough to sign Damon…

Fun Marcus Thames trivia

He hit a home run on the first pitch he ever faced in the majors. I’m sure that’ll come up on the YES broadcast at some point as a question, if he ends up making the team. Your welcome in advance.

by RicketyCricket on Feb 9, 2010 12:25 AM EST reply actions

Not just a home run.
Home run off of Randy Johnson back when Randy Johnson was nasty.

Low-Risk, High-Reward

Don’t forget LF is in a transition year before Crawford or Werth sign with us next year. One of the guys we have on our line-up is going to get hot, so whoever’s hot can play LF that day. Nice deal Cashman!

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

if we can rotate...

these under-perfoming outfielders it might not be that bad. none of them are groundbreaking players but they are great interchangeable parts, and good for all types of match-ups. this is still better than signing damon to an overpaid 2 year deal.
