Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti is a proponent of the NFL salary cap, and took a light-hearted shot at the Yankees during today's news conference for their inability to totally dominate Major League Baseball with their huge revenue and payroll advantage over the other 29 teams.
"It certainly doesn't show up in the standings," Bisciotti said. "If I'm a Yankees fan, I'm upset we're not winning 130 games with the roster that they have and the money that they pay out. I think it's a disgrace they only beat the average team by 10 games in the standings with three times the money. I'd fire that GM. You don't need a GM. All you have to do is buy the last Cy Young Award winner every year."
He's an owner in favor of a salary cap (what a shock!), yet he actually makes a case against it (e.g. the Yanks spend so much money but don't dominate the competition).
There are just so many flaws in his statement, it's hard to know where to begin.

Being an NFL team owner
I would’ve hoped that he, first-hand, knows why salary caps are such a horrendous concept. Maybe he’s been brainwashed by the yes-men of the NFL.
Really?
[A salary cap] reduces salaries in two ways: Teams over the cap are taken out of the bidding for free agents (or for pricey trade targets), giving available players fewer options and reducing bidding pressure, and teams just below the cap will resist blowing their budget on a single player.
And a salary cap does nothing to force the bottom teams to spend:
If we just use the raw numbers, it appears that at least 10 teams collected $90 million-plus this year before they opened their ticket windows, let one car into their parking lots or sold one slice of pizza.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Well that's because
I wouldn’t eat pizza further south than Cape May, NJ.
"I'm just tryin' to be the great, tryin' to get a piece of cake
Take it offa your plate, eat it right in your face" --Lil Wayne
Sam Borden's take is excellent
Either way, doesn’t Bisciotti have, like, bigger things to worry about? You know, like the NFL possibly shutting down?
Zing. And on that note, with the whole possibility of an “uncapped year”, I wonder what Stevie has to say about that.
The "Have nots"
Will always be jealous of the “Haves.”
And in the immortal paraphrased words of Joe DiMaggio:
“I want to thank the Good Lord for making me a ‘Have’!”
that guy is a moron
clearly he knows nothing about baseball…baseball is a sport(unlike football) where a team that is 5-40 can beat a team that is 40-5 without it being outrageous..they may even take 2 out of 3 from time to time. baseball is a sport where one player(pitcher) can have a once in a lifetime game and keep the other team from scoring a run. it’s an absurd comment and one that shows is knowledge of baseball or lack there of.
Its a wonder how some of these owners...
became owners in the first place, which how utterly IGNORANT they are.
Or…maybe that’s the point? Rich Dummy?
I guess over in D.C. they haven’t had much baseball being played recently…so maybe that’s this POS’s excuse?
I hope he chokes on his next batch of caviar.
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there
I'm a little torn here...
…I like Bisciotti because he’s a big supporter of Maryland basketball, but I think he’s off base and severely misinformed here.

I'm no math major but I would think the "average team" went 81-81.
Which means we beat the average team by 22 games.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Stop it
you’re hurting my head with all of that subtraction…
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Hahaha, back tha fug up Bill James,
I’m introducing a new statistical analysis tool: SUBTRACTION
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
I just don't buy into all of these new age metrics
back in my day we figured out who was a good baseball team by watching who hit the ball far.
You God damn kids and your “subtraction” and “win-loss records” are ruining the damn game.
How is it even fun for you to watch baseball when you’re just buried in these statistics?
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
When I watch basbeall all I see is 1's and 0's
like The Matrix
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Baseball too.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Yankees 7 Red Sox 0 looks like this

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
at least
this isnt River Ave Blues where they would do 20 paragraph essay on SUBTRACTION

When Ever I Hear The Salary Cap Argument..
I provide a link that explains why it wont work.

I think they know what they’re talking about.
Now now...
The Ravens were unfairly beaten because the Colts have Peyton Manning.
The Colts should go 19-0 every year because of him!

It is unfair
to a Colts fan. They have the best in the business and they lost two games. What less can a fan expect? Failed season, wheteher they win sunday or not.
ahah this guy is a total joke. Obviously a O’s fan.
Section 203 Row 15 Seat 1
Not really.
I’m a Colts/Giants fan and I hope you weren’t serious because a Super Bowl win sounds good to me.
But yeah he probably is an Os fan.

But seriously, folks
You’ve ignored a much more compelling argument (although I just read the Baseball prospectus article and agree with it)-
Sports league prosper most when there is a dominant team, or even better- two dominant teams. Think about this. Is golf better off or worse without Tiger Woods winning one third of the major events? With him out, and everyone else suddenly having a chance to win, they can’t 5,000 people out to the course and their tv ratings go into the toilet.
Interest in the NFL skyrocketed in 2007 when the Patriots had a chance to run the table.
And in baseball, how much less money would the Rays and Orioles take in if Yankee and Red Sox fans didn’t buy half of their seats (and hotdogs, and beer, and parking) 18 times a year?
Very few major league owners are so poor that they could not invest money from their personal or other business fortunes into their baseball franchise if it would increase profits. Therefore, they must be happy with the status quo.

I Agree With What You're Saying
I also get pissed off when every time something is brought up about a salary cap in baseball, fingers are always pointed at the Yankees like they are against it. I have never seen the Yankees take that stance and I doubt the big market teams would have a problem with a salary cap. The real truth is,if you have a front office that doesn’t know what its doing(Pirates,Royals), it wouldn’t matter if there was a salary cap. Football has one, yet the same teams are in the playoffs often(Colts,Pats, Eagles, Cowboys, Giants) and just like in baseball there are some teams that never get there(Lions, Browns).
Wow what an idiot
clearly knows nothing about baseball. Stick to your own sport. I’m pretty sure this guys concerns should be wondering how to improve his team after getting the crap beat out of them in the playoffs.
let me explain
this sound weird but the denver broncos sign more free agants than the yankees duing the cap era from 93-09
