Was hoping it would be Albaladejo. Guess the Yankees want to see what Alby can do now that he weighs 25-30 pounds fewer.

In other news, Kevin Millar is smiling. How about Ramirez to the Cubs a Ramirez-Millar reunion!

Had high hopes for Edwar

…and his changeup was killer, but it just never seemed like he could be counted on to be consistent. He could never get out of the 80’s with any other pitch, and would throw that change pitch after pitch after pitch.
I think the league started to figure him out pretty quick. Even when they knew that change was coming, sometimes they couldnt handle it. But the changeup has got to be part of an arsenal, not THE arsenal.
I hope he does well cuz he’s a good kid and a great story. It was satisfying to see the Yankees pick someone off the Angel’s trash dump and turn him into a weapon. But I agree with keeping Albaladejo around.

Thats not fair to him

It was only in 2008 that he was one of the Yankees top relievers. He had extremely high K rates and a devastating changeup. He had one bad month in 2009, and they sent him down- and now they are releasing him without even giving him another chance? I don’t think thats fair.

I had high hopes for him. I really thought he could be a solid reliever. I even thought that he should be the final man out of the bullpen for the Yankees this year. Why would you DFA Edwar, a guy who has had major league success for a full season, and then hang on to guys like Mitre and Albaladejo, who both have had little MLB success?

I hope Edwar manages to stay on the team and earn himself another shot at some point, but he’s probably going to be claimed by someone. If that happens, I wish him good luck. I really loved that changeup. I’m rooting for him, along with Wang, to pitch well with their new teams. Then the Yankees would see that it was a mistake to give up on those two guys so quickly.

Maybe they DFA'd him because he had a 1.5 WHIP and walked 5/9 ip in MLB.

So you want an inferior reliever in the bullpen just to be fair to him? Ummmm no. The book was out on Edwar. Don’t swing at the changeup and wait for him to float you an 88mph fastball somewhere in the zone and smack the hell out of it.

If anything, DFA’ing him is doing the guy a favor because he can catch on with the Pirates or Mets or Royals and get a MLB job rather than being the 7th bullpen option out of Scranton.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Well

I sort of agree with both of you. I think the Yankees could have waited a little longer and tried to help him develop other pitches better, but it really does help his career in the long run. He wasn’t next in line or even that close to getting a big league job with the Yankees this year it seems, so maybe a trip to another team is best for him.

I always liked Edwar and hoped he’d put it together. But, he’ll be 29 on Opening Day, and while he’s shown flashes of promise, he struggles with his control and really only has one “good” pitch. There are literally dozens and dozens of middle relievers that fit that description.

He'll probably clear waivers...

And be back with Scranton anyway. We’ll see but I can’t see other teams climbing over each other to claim him.

I can see that too.

His changeup is great. His 89mph no movement fastball and no other pitches are not.

I told 'ya

Sorry to say I told you so, but…and Albaladejo will be at AAA.

I don't think I've ever agreed before with anyone named "Casanova-" anything.

But I do now. How many guys who are reliever-only talent suddenly ‘get it’ at age 29?
Not many.
