Chan Ho Park?

According to Korean sources, Chan Ho Park signed with the Yanks for 1.2 M.  seems a bit odd of a signing, though Park as a reliever isn't terrible.

Hmmm, looks like it's confirmed.

http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100222&content_id=8110926

Park is obviously famous for his disastrous (and profitable) stint with Texas, but he had some nice years with the Dodgers (4 actually)  and he wasn't terrible as a reliever in the last couple of years.

His fast ball which had been clocked on average in the high 80 or very low 90s in Texas saw a noticeable uptick with the move to the pen, and he could usually sit 92-93 and hit some 95 .

I guess this is OKish signing, though it begs the question of what they're going to do with Mitre? As it stands now it seems highly likely (that barring injuries) the pitching staff will look like...

CC / AJ  / Andy / Javy / Joba

Mo/Hughes/Robertson/Aceves / Marte / Gaudin/ Park

Almost all of those are pretty much locks (As bad as Park can be at times, he's still better than Mitre.)

OH GOD!

We’re not making the playoffs! We didn’t sign the best reliever in the league! OH NO!

***finds window and jumps

Fhew! Only 2 stories, I only sprained a pinkie (according to the “Tony Romo guidlines on being a puss”, I’ll be out for 4 weeks)

Park can bring it out of the pen as opposed to the rotation (what an UNFATHOMABLE CONCEPT!!!!!!) and is actually a pretty good signing.

This guy was pretty good against the Yanks in the WS remember? Good move Cashman. You keep all this stuff up, you’ll be the “genius GM”, not that poser over in Bahston

Not a bad move

The guy is pretty good out of the pen, and he didn’t cost much. So, why not? Shoot, during a season you wind up going thru about 20 or so pitchers, anyway, so adding another good one can only help. Have fun in Scranton, Sergio Mitre.

its a luxery

to be able to take a chance on Park as a reliever. With the potential strength that we have, if we land CHP as a strong mid inning reliever(although id be surprised if he was to thrive) would be a great pick-up

if he stinks up tha place..well.. no biggie!

Well remember last year

you can never have too much pitching. The Yankees used a lot of relievers during the regular season. They weeded them out for the playoffs things worked out alright as I remember.

Bright Side/Down Side

Bright Side: It lessens the chance that Sergio Mitre will be on the major league roster.
Down Side: It lessens the chance that Mark Melancon, Romulo Sanchez, etc. will get a chance to be on the roster.

This signing is upsetting for one main reason. For the last 2 years the Yankees had focused on developing their bullpen through the farm system, and it’s worked. David Robertson. Alfredo Aceves. Even for guys who weren’t that good like Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras, they were able to make solid major league contributions before hitters figured them out. Park is a signing that’s reminiscent of the mid-2000’s philosophy of signing/acquiring veteran scrubs who never had any success in the AL. Felix Heredia, Gabe White, etc. Yes, Park had good numbers out of the pen last year, but he was very mediocre even out of the pen in 2008. The final spot in the bullpen could have been much better used by giving Mark Melancon or whichever younger guy won the spot major league innings and experience and seeing what happened.

It only has that downside if a minor leaguer can’t push the vet off the roster with stellar performance.

Another option is that Cash wants to send someone (Joba/Hughes/Aceves) to AAA to stretch out as a starter.

12th spot not for young reliever

Adding Vazquez gives Yanks another 200 IP starter they did not have last year. With Marte healthy and complete confidence in Aceves, Robertson, Joba/Hughes and Mo that leaves you a long reliever/inning eater/6th starter (Gaudin) and a 12th pitcher that only gets to play when the game is out of reach or several other relievers are tired. Not good to have young talent sit around for 10 days and then ask them to be sharp. Perfect role for a vet starter turned reliever…and if he sucks we cut him and use the Scranton shuttle for a young guy who’s had the oportunity to pitch and stay sharp.

Why are we signing righties? We only have one solid lefty in the pen.

by YankeesPWNu on Feb 22, 2010 10:13 AM EST reply actions

Either A) There are no lefties

or C)

How many lefties do you really need?

by 3460kuri on Feb 22, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Why 2?

Especially when that 2nd lefty is somebody terrible like Boone Logan or Kei Igawa?

by 3460kuri on Feb 22, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

Because

what if Marte gets hurt? Or is ineffective? Or, more pratically:

what if he is needed to pitch in 3-4 straight days?

what if there is a big spot with a lefty bat (e.g. Otiz, Howard, etc.) TWICE after the starter is pulled but before we want to put the closer/bridge in? Happens a lot, especially in higher scoring games.

by GMan83201 on Feb 22, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

If the option is going with one of the good but not great righty relievers

(Aceves, Robertson) because we can’t use the best relievers (Marte, Hughes, Mo), are you really telling me you’d rather use Boone Logan?

You have more faith in Boone Logan to get an out than Ace or Robertson? I don’t care what side of the plate the dude stands on, you don’t get talent just by pitching with your left hand.

There’s absolutely no logical reason why we should keep a crappy reliever instead of a more talented reliever, just cuz the first guy is a lefty.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Is this guaranteed money?

It seems like since there was no money available for Damon because the mythical budget was reached, that Winn and Park must have been signed for free. (Not that Damon was a must- sign, only that it seems tlike the money was there if they actually wanted to sign him).

I sort of get this signing, but I’m not enthusiastix about it for all the reasons everyone else has already mentioned. I will also have to stop pretending that Chan Ho Park is where you go to walk your dog.

by designatedquitter on Feb 22, 2010 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Park is clearly a better option than both Mitre and Gaudin

Listen, Gaudin’s 2009 stint with the Yankees brings to mind memories of Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small. All three were able to defy the odds and put up stellar numbers for part of a season, but Chacon and Small collapsed the following year and were out of baseball shortly thereafter. What happens to Gaudin is anybody’s guess, but his horrendous WHIP and high home run rates scare the daylights out of me.

Park is a serviceable pitcher. He’s better as a reliever at this point in his career, but if needed, he can make a spot start without having to be stretched out or handled with kid gloves. And, my bets are that he’s going to pitch better than Chad Gaudin or Sergio Mitre in either role, so it’s a win/win.

Signing a veteran to this type of contract (1 year, low dollar amount) is never a mistake. Never.

Did they aquire chan ho park because somebody looked awful in spring training?

by Meatface on Feb 22, 2010 1:12 PM EST reply actions

No..

They acquired him because of his experience, and for little money, short term. To be honest a better option than a Albaledejo or Ramirez.

No hurry..

What is the hurry with guys like Melancon and this other guy Sanchez? The bottom line is until you prove yourself at the major league level, all prospects. Really the kid Melancon looked pretty raw to me when he was up last year, another year in the minors isn’t going to hurt him.
A guy like Aceves for example, they got him from the Mexican League, he wasn’t a kid when he came over here. I don’t think any of us wll miss a Mitre, if Park makes the team, and he doesn’t.

by Great Gatsby on Feb 22, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

He can be disappointed

But a rookie who has done absolutely nothing at the big-league level has no right to ever be pissed about management trying to make the team better.

He didn’t get anything yet.

They’re 2 days in spring training.

Melancon can still make the squad.

MO, Marte, Hughes (???), Ace, Robertson, Park. Seems like there could be a spot for one more.

If Melancon earns it, he can make it. As always its on him.

As always, too early to determine anything.

Gaudin, they would have non-tendered him, if they thought he might not be with the team. They signed him before he went to arbitration.

Early hook for starters

With a surplus in the bullpen, I think Girardi will shuffle kids back and forth to the minors more often now. It allows him to protect starters from high pitch counts. It’s all geared towards October.

I wish we could continue to just show up and play for no reason. No umpires, no scorers. Just show up and have fun.

Fairly low cost pitching depth

If Park can pitch well out of the pen like he did with the Phillies and Dodgers, he’ll be a relative bargain.

This move almost assures that either Hughes or Joba will start out the year in AAA.

28th Nervous Breakdown

Chan Ho Park. I’m banging my head against the wall, trying to forget the pain!! WE NEED ANOTHER LEFTY RELIEVER!!!!! I’m worried there’s going to be a lot more late inning homers in the rightfield bleachers and they ain’t always gonna be ours this time… Please Brian Cashman, sign a lefty!!! One lefty in the pen for this ballpark, get serious. Why don’t the Rockies just go out and load their team with guys that just throw curveballs and we’ll just jetison every lefty from the staff.

by SteveBalboniHOF on Feb 22, 2010 9:02 PM EST reply actions

That's funny

apparently Cashman got all caught up in whether or not an available pitcher was “talented”, and forgot to just grab the first piece of crap he saw that threw with his left hand.

If we’re looking for a LOOGY, we’re gunna have plenty of them in AAA (Logan, Igawa, De La Rosa).

I just don’t understand at all why you have this mad desire that Damaso Marte won’t fill our quota of lefties. Weren’t you watching when Joe Torre would go and get Mike Myers out of the pen to get out David Ortiz….and Ortiz would rope the first pitch he saw?

An above average righty is better than a below average lefty. God, this isn’t rocket science.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Perhaps, but Wang last won 19 in 2007

He’s been hurt for a year and a half, winning 8 in 2008 and then 1 in 2009. I also understand that he may not be ready this year until June. That history makes Wang someone you take a chance on for short money if you’re the Nationals or the Royals, not someone the defending world champions pay large bucks to keep. That’s why Wang is so cheap- he’s a reclamation project at this point.

by designatedquitter on Feb 24, 2010 2:45 PM EST reply actions

Park will flop...

I think this is a waste of money. They have a “budget?”
Yankees did something they always do, go gaga over a guy that pitches well against them.
Park pitched well in the WS last year vs the Yanks. Thats in a short run. He can not do it consistently.

Look at the bigger view. Look at all the good years for Park. What do they have in common?
They were all NL.
Lifetime NL ERA 3.99, WHIP 1.346, K/BB 1.97
Lifetime AL ERA 5.79, WHIP 1.610 K/BB 1.47

Can you say no DH and didnt face the good Philly lineup last year?

Typically a pitchers ERA is about .5 less in the NL. But if yo go to the AL east, I would say it would be closer to .75.

So a bullpen guy with a 4.80-5.30 era? Not that good.
How would you feel if every other inning he gave up a run when the Yanks are trying to shut the other team down?
We already have guys that are about that caliber (including Ramirez, Albaledejo, Guadin, Ace, etc.). At least Guadin has shown he can perform in the AL in the past.

I would take Ace or Guadin in a heartbeat over Park.
So why spend the 1.2 million? This does not make sense unless there is a plan later in the spring to trade one of them.
