Who makes the 25 man roster?
Spring training is rapidly approaching. Most position seem set for the Yankees. There will be competition to make the team.
|
Lots of possibilities here and options for Joe Girade: Pitchers: 1. Alfredo Aceves - filled every role he was asked to fill last year. 2. A.J. Burnett - #2 or #4 starter depends on who you talk to. 3. Joba Chamberlain - #5 starter or 8th inning set-up man. 4. Chad Gaudin - #5 starter or long reliever. 5. Phil Hughes - #5 starter or 8th inning set-up man. 6. Damaso Marte - left hander who perform admirably in post season. 7. Andy Petitte - #3 starter. 8. Mariano Rivera - closer. 9. David Robertson - may become 8th inning set up man. 10. C.C. Sabathia - #1 starter. 11. Javier Vazquez - # 2 or #4 starter probable #4. 12a. Wilkin De Rosa - lefty specialist. 12b. Boone Logan - lefty specialist. 12c. Kei Igawana - lefty specialist. 12d. Royce Ring - left specialist. 12e. Sergio Mitre - 5th starter
Position players: 1. Francisco Cervelli - back up cather and right handed batter off bench. 2. Jorge Posada - starting catcher. 3. Robinson Cano - starting 2nd basemen. 4. Derek Jeter - captain and starting short stop. 5. Nick Johnson - starting DH and back-up first basemen. 6. Ramiro Pena - super utility his job and switch hitting option on the bench. 7. Alex Rodriguez - starting 3rd basemen. 8. Mark Teixeira - starting first basemen. 9. Brett Gardener - starting center fielder, left field, 4th outfielder, off bench, and late inning option. 10.Curtis Granderson - starting left fielder or center fielder. 11. Nick Swisher - starting right fielderand third option at first base. 12. Randy Winn -- starting left fielder, fourth outfielder and switch hitting option off of bench. 13a. Jamie Hoffman - right handed bat off bench and fifth outfielder. 13b. Marcus Thames - right handed option off bench and fifth outfielder. 13c. Kevin Russo - utility infielder right handed option off bench. 13d. Juan Miranda - DH and left handed hitter off bench. Most of the other candidates on the two lists ( see below lists) for pitching and position players are very long shots at best. With Montero or Romine most likely the first options to be called up to replace an injured catcher. Pitching from all indications, the Yankees will only go with 12 pitchers. So it looks like a Sergio either makes it a starter or will be back in minors with potential to be first one called up to be a starting pitcher or even a trade option. The real fight here is for the left handed specialist. Boone Logan may be leading this pack. But, I believe that Kei Igawan would be an outstanding option here. He could be the specialist and long reliever if needed. This is especially important if an opposing line up is loaded with left handed batters. The rest of my list will be consider but I truly believe they will end up in the minor leagues. I foresee the Yankees going with 13 position players this year. I believe that Jamie Hoffman will win out here. Because of his defense and I believe Kevin Long will make him a more potent right handed bat off the bench. Marcus Thames will be first option if someone goes down to an injury of our outfielders Kevin Russo will be called up if a regular infielder or back up goes down to injury. Juan Mirade is very interesting he has power and hit for a good average. He probable will not make team simply because he is left handed. With so many starters either left handed or switch hitters, makes it a tough call to keep this left handed batter. But if Johnson or Teixeira goes on the DL he is first candidate back to big leagues. So what are your thought on the 25 man roster? |

Robertson
Aceves
Gaudin
Melancon
Marte

Teixeira

Pena
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
This is what I'd go with
1. CC Sabathia
2. AJ Burnett
3. Andy Pettitte
4. Javier Vasquez
5. Joba Chamberlain
6. Chad Gaudin
7. Alfredo Aceves
8. Edwar Ramirez
9. David Robertson
10. Damaso Marte
11. Phil Hughes
12. Mariano Rivera
13. Jorge Posada
14. Mark Teixeira
15. Robinson Cano
16. Alex Rodriguez
17. Derek Jeter
18. Brett Gardner
19. Curtis Granderson
20. Nick Swisher
21. Nick Johnson
22. Francisco Cervelli
23. Ramiro Pena
24. Randy Winn
25. Greg Golson
May be surprised with Golson, but I think he could be useful. If Gardner’s gonna start, that takes away the speed threat off the bench. Golson is VERY fast, and could fill the role Gardner had last year. He’s also an excellent defender and could take Swisher’s place in late innings. I’d like to see him over Hoffman or Thames in that last outfield role. Thames is nothing more than a hitter, and there honestly won’t be that many chances for him to “pinch hit” in that lineup. Or at least not as many chances as Golson would have to run.
On the pitching side, I go with Edwar for the last spot. I love the guy. I love his story. And I love his devastating changeup. A few minor adjustments and I think he could be a solid final reliever for Joe Girardi. Remember, in 2008 he was one of the top relievers on the team. He has proven he could succeed in the big leagues, and Girardi has personally seen that. I think that should give him a leg up on some of the other relievers in camp.
I agree
to a certain extent except I think Thames may have more opportunities to PH than you think. With Gardner or Winn in the 9 slot with 1 or 2 outs in the ninth and the game on the line with runners in scoring position there may be several chances to PH. Also, Melancon over Ramirez.
I agree that Thames will have his chances to hit
I just think that Golson would have more chances to run in late innings. How valuable was Gardner off the bench last year pinch running for all the slowpokes in that lineup? A lot more valuable than Eric Hinske, who was the Yankees power threat off the bench. I’m not saying that Thames won’t have his chances. But I’m saying that Golson will have more if he’s running for Posada, Johnson (who will get on base a ton and is probably the slowest guy on the team, so I’m guessing he’ll get run for the most), Teixeira, Swisher, Cano, and even A-Rod (Girardi proved he’s willing to take him out of a game. Remember the ALCS last year?). Thats 2/3 of the lineup that Golson could run for an help the team win in late innings, much more than the 1/2 batters Thames could hit more. Also, speed is usually more effective that power hitting. There is a much bigger chance that if Golson runs, he’ll successfully steal a base than Thames pinch hitting and hitting a single/double/triple/homerun. I just loved the role Gardner played last year, and because he’s starting I wouldn’t want to lose that.
Both Melancon and Edwar need to work on control. I think whichever one of them shows more in spring training gets the nod. But if it’s really close, I’d go with Ramirez simply because of his 2008 success. He’s proved he could succeed in the big leagues, while Melancon has just proved he could walk and drill batters in the big leagues.
If I had to guess...
It would be
C
Posada, Cervelli
IF
Teixeira, Cano, Jeter, A-Rod, Pena
OF
Swisher, Granderson, Gardner, Winn, Thames
SP
C.C., A.J., Pettitte, Vazquez, Joba
RP
Mariano, Hughes, Robertson, Marte, Aceves, Gaudin, Melancon
If we don’t sign any more players I really think the last bullpen spot is the only thing up for grabs. Girardi has spoken against carrying lefties just because they’re lefties, so if Melancon pitches well he should have a leg up on Ring, Logan, DeLaRosa, etc.
I think Thames should beat out Hoffman easily. We already have 2 high-end defensive outfielders in Winn and Gardner so the last bench spot should be used on a compitent right handed hitter, not another light hitting defensive replacement.

1. Alfredo Aceves - filled every role he was asked to fill last year.
So many places I could go with this…
I think that this is definitely one of them...

Credibility in question
Inserting Kei Iguana as a serious option invalidates everything else said. That kid should never pitch in a Yankee uniform ever again! He reminds me of a kid in little league afraid of the batter at the plate!!
