Source: Mauer signs 10-year deal with Twins
From WCCO-TV:
Sources tell WCCO-TV's Mark Rosen that American League MVP Joe Mauer has come to a preliminary agreement with the Minnesota Twins for a 10-year contract extension.
Mauer, 26, and the Twins had been pretty quiet about contract negotiations, while fans were eager to find out if their hometown hero would be staying put at last weekend's annual fan festival.
This is Mauer's final year of his current contract and manager Ron Gardenhire said Friday he was confident that both sides would come together and strike a deal.
Mauer's current salary this season is $12.5 million. Contract details about his new salary were not immediately released.
Good for Mauer, and good for the Twins.
Also, I'm here to collect my $200 bottle of scotch for being right about it:

Good for baseball, too.
The Twins have been one of the best run franchises of the last decade. I wish them continued regular season success, and a string of postseason defeats at the hands of our Yankees. :)
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I don't know about well-run
I understand they’re on a budget, but the Twins routinely employee players who have no realistic hope of performing at replacement level. I remember Tim McCarver quoting Ron Gardenhire during the LDS, saying that Nick Punto “just LOOKS like a baseball player”. Too bad he doesn’t HIT like one.
Except when he faces the Yankees...
seriously, his ’09 splits against the Yankees are ludicrous. Almost like the Yankees had to overcome Punto to beat the Twinkies.

That's right, I'm breaking stories now
Well, at least ones that have already been broken by someone I’m following on Twitter.
And if you don’t think I’m serious about collecting on that bet, you’re crazy.
I’m looking at you HappyGoldenWhatever…

It's not official yet...
…but I’ll gladly wait until it’s announced to collect.
Man, I hate being right all the time. Lot of pressure.

When Joba posts a 3.50 ERA and 190 innings
this year in the rotation, we’ll see how much pressure you are under sir.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
I don't want to bring up that whole thing again
but it was the only thing I could remember off of the top of my head that you and I disagreed on.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Sounds like you're extending a challenge...
…and I accept. There were 6 American League pitchers with an ERA of 3.50 or better last year.
I’ll gladly bet against Joba doing that in that many innings. I’d even consider dropping it to 175 just to make it fair.

If Joba stays healthy and in the rotation all season
Then I’ll take the under of a 3.50 season ERA and the over on 175 innings.
Loser has to go join OTM and write a post about how good Casey Kelly is.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

It's a bet...
…although there’s a one million percent chance my post on OTM will be over-the-top with sarcasm and profanity, so much so that I’ll enjoy it and get banned.
Not sure how much of a punishment that actually is for me.
It’s a moot point, as there’s no chance he throws that many innings with that low of an ERA.

Well then either way
we’ll get a good chuckle out of it anyways.
Best case scenario: Joba has a great season AND we get to watch you rip on OTM.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
I’d like a permanent link to that post that comes up on OTM eventually, allows me to get through one of these dreary 10-hours-in-a-lab days.

don't be proud that you wont this bet
this wasn’t that out of the picture at all. he’s from minnesota and if he signed he would forever be loved and respected by Minnesota and baseball fans all around by not just going after money.
where have you gone Joe dimaggio our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you?
Yes, I know that.
Read the link. I was told in no uncertain terms that there was “NO WAY” Mauer would re-sign in Minnesota.

Jscape is right...this is good for baseball
Other teams need hometown heroes. And there needs to be some challenge for the Yanks.
Cliff Lee (been around the league) and Carl Crawford (not the face of the franchise) I don’t mind, but taking Mauer or Pujols would be…wrong on some level.
I agree...
I love the Yankees but lets be for realif they sign guys like Mauer and Pujols they are just adding to the long list of guys who arent home grown…“pride of the YANKEES” i want to root for the Yankees not a team with 2 true Yankees on it

I’ll be curious to see how close in total value this contract will be to A-Rod’s current deal. I’m assuming that Mauer’s contract will be fore no less than $225 million.
he's not getting more than A-Rod
Nobody is. Not even Pujols when he signs his extention. But it’s gonna be up there to at least 225-250 million a year. thats for sure.
Buster Olney tweeted
that Rosen’s report on a preliminary 10 year deal was not accurate.

Wow!!!
I’m so surprised. I thought for sure we’d have gotten him for Kei Igawa and some cash.

How the hell did you find out that me and Cash were getting ready to pull the trigger on the Igawa for Mauer deal
Dammit now it’s off.

Why would you want to discontinue the legacy of Scranton’s all-time wins leader for some hired gun? There’s a stadium front statue being built for him in PA.

i actually couldn't be happier.
we all have probably thought about Mauer playing for the yankees and how dominant they would be with him. But it would be way to unfair, and would take all the fun out of baseball. Congradulations twins.
where have you gone Joe dimaggio our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you?
Good for Mauer,
glad he did this. Cuz we all know that he’d either be a Yank or a Pissant come this time next year if he was FA.
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there
They better hope like hell he don't get hurt.EVER

hooray for the Havenots
Minny plays competitive baseball without being a big market team. Mauer ,if the Twins have an ancillary cut, should withthe right handling become extremely marketable in the Ad world, He can be a baseball poster boy, like Jeter without the rings.

good for Minnesota
i cannot imagine their fanbase if they somehow let his go
Gotta Love the Twins, BUT....
Too hard to believe a Team with as little in payroll would sign him to 20M-25M per year for 10 years. This would seal their fate in the same manner Texas sealed their fate signing A-ROD to a 252M deal over 10 years. The Twins have less money then Texas did so they would certainly loose Mourneau and everyone else when resigning them comes up. I think they can give him a 7year/105M deal, but he would certainly command a lot more (Tex like) next year in the open market. For the Twins it is always going to be pitching and defense to compete.
actually...
the Twins owner is one of the richest in all of baseball…he can absorb the “loss” of paying Mauer.
They’re getting a new stadium and likely will have a whole bunch of new revenue
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there
Who would be the next Yankee catcher?
Jorge Posada’s contract will be up in 2011 and looks like he is going to retire. With Mauer sticking with the Twins, who would the Yankees pick for their next everyday catcher?
Jesus Montero’s bat is ready for the big leagues, question is will Montero be ready for catching duty. His size and weight is not design to be a catcher.
Austin Romine is much better defensively but he will be ready in 2012. Looks like the Yankees will have a lot of thinking to do on their catching position.
Mauer was never the Yankees next catcher...
the Twins are not the Yankees minor league team…..
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there
Not really...
Cervelli and Romine are also capable.
If the Yankee’s field a roster of less then 9 All-stars…it won’t kill them.
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there
It might. What if there was a serial killer that only attacked teams with under 9 All-Star position players?
Then,
there are 29 other teams on that list. We shouldn’t worry.
by Vancouverguy on Feb 2, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
But one of the reason that Yankees
have been great has been their ability to have big producers from non typical positions. Jeter’s bat coming from a shortstop, Bernie Williams bat coming from centerfield, Jorge Posada’s bat coming from catcher, Alfonso Soriano’s and later Robinson Cano’s production coming from 2nd base.
I don’t think Posada was ever the best catcher in his league, but no one can doubt he was always on the short list of premium catchers.
Crowds are won and lost and won again, but our hearts beat for the diehards.

It may actually be refreshing
to have some homegrown talent replace Posada. Montero and Romine will both make some team very happy. If it is true that Mauer has signed a 10 year contract (these rumors usually do pan out), then maybe the Yankees can quit saving their pennies for this guy.
Good for them
about time that cheap owner over there spent some money. Mauer is the face of their franchise. It wouldn’t have been good for baseball for him to go somewhere else, especially the Yankees, who have taken so many other teams franchise players for their own in the past (so have other teams. thats free agency. but the Yanks have done it the most). Could you have imagined the uproar if the Yankees signed Mauer?
Hopefully Montero will be able to catch in the future. If not, they’ll have a place for him somewhere on the team with that bat. Romine I hear is an excellent defensive catcher as well. Plus the Great Cervelli. The Yanks are loaded with catching prospects, so I don’t think the position will be too difficult for them to fill in the future.
Okay, okay, new plan...
we BUY the Twins and put Joe on our roster!
or...
trade him AND Morneau for Igawa and Mitre!
by Vancouverguy on Feb 2, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
Nice
We wouldn’t have gotten Mauer anyway. Looks like the new owners like to spend money.
