Red Sox Huge Split

Im sure everyone has heard by now Carl Crawford has signed with the Red Sox. To go along with the trade for Gonzalez., the Sox now seem to be the favorites in the AL East. The only option the Yankees seem to have left is to give Lee a blank check. Here's the reason why...

2011 Boston Red Sox Projected Lineup Against Lefties(Past 3 Seasons)

Carl Crawford: .259/.312/.372

Dustin Pedroia: .284/.370/.439

Adrian Gonzalez: .258/.347/.440

Kevin Youkilis: .328/.447/.620

David Ortiz: .218/.291/.383

JD Drew: .246/.358/.409

Jason Varitek: .252/.347/.491

Marco Scutaro: .274/.357/.404

Jacoby Ellsbury: .305/.357/.391 or Mike Cameron: .289/.413/.567

Red Sox Projected 2011 Lineup and Stats

As you can see the only ones who really stand out are Youkilis, and Ellsbury for being a lefty himself. The best way to beat the Sox is with southpaws, so Sabathia and Cliff Lee would be vital. Maybe Andy Pettitte comes back, giving us 3 great lefties and a great advantage over them. Even Burnett pitches better against lefties, so bottom line is back up the money truck to Lee's Arkansas home and bring it on Red Sox!

I'm pretty happy with those numbers

and you seem to forget Varitek and Cameron, who will play when lefties pitch.

Keep in mind Drew's 246/.358/.409 is likely to be replaced with

Cameron’s .289/.413/.567 which is pretty nasty. Really only Crawford and Ortiz are bad against lefties while Agonz and Scutaro are average against them. They’ll be a tough outfit no matter what.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Don't forget Jed Lowrie

.324 AVG/.403 OBP/.541 SLG (.944 OPs/.408 wOBA) v. lefties.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

you forgot to mention

he’s only had 71 at bats against lefties in 2010. Small sample size.

He only has 197 career at bats against lefties. That’s still a pretty small sample.

Montero will be our savior in 2011.

So?

He figures to get significant playing time, and may end up being the starting shortstop. Varitek is listed—and he only has 226 AB against lefties over the same period of time. Lowrie will likely get many more AB than tek next year.

3-year splits, which this post is about, are pretty small samples too.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Off-topic

Drugs, from my expansive OTM lurking, I know that you were pretty opposed to making a deal for Gonzalez, preferring to wait until free agency, instead of paying for him with cash and prospects.

Now that the deal went down, what are your thoughts? Are you happier to have Gonzo than you are sad about losing Kelly, Rizzo, and Fuentes?

Most of the Sox fans that I’ve talked to/heard from are fairly over the moon about the offseason moves, but I was wondering if you had an alternate perspective.

I have mixed feelings

Since the Sox already had an elite 1B (Youk), I’d rather hold onto the prospects. Rizzo and Kelly should end up being good players. I’m not sold on Fuentes, a player with lots of speed but no plate discipline.

I like Gonzalez as a player. But by wRC+, he really isn’t better than Youk (who I felt was one of the best 1B in baseball). I’m not a fan of moving Youk across the diamond. It’s a short-term fix at best because Youk is getting older, and 3B is a more physically demanding position than 1B. DHing either Gonzalez or Youk diminishes their value.

However, if the Sox were going to sign Gonzaelz after next season, Rizzo would have been blocked anyway. So, Rizzo would likely have been moved regardless. Basically, for me, it comes down to Gonzalez for Kelly. I like Kelly. But the Sox’ system has lots of pitching depth, so they can afford to lose Kelly.

I can live with the deal (assuming they extend Gonzalez). But I would have preferred to see the Sox hold onto the prospects and try to sign Gonzalez next year. Even though Rizzo would have been blocked, the Sox could have moved him for something else. And, you can never have too much pitching.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Varitek has 14 years of AB's vs lefties

Lowrie has less than a half season’s worth.

This post is about 3-year samples for each player

Therefore, adding Lowrie is valid. And regarding Tek, his skills are rapidly declining. So, what Tek did between 2003 and 2005 (when he could hit) has little meaning now.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
