Hey guys. Before I begin, I want to start by saying that I am a huge Yankee fan (despite my username). I was born and raised in NY before moving to Florida a few years ago, so I have been a Yankee fan my entire life.
Now down to business. When I heard that Justin Upton was available, I started thinking of ways to get him. He is a great outfielder who is young, cheap (relatively), and still has potential. I've been thinking about this deal. Justin Upton for Dellin Betances, Austin Romaine, and Curtis Granderson. I know that sounds like a lot, but to get something, you have to give something up. I really think this deal would be fair for both teams. We get one of the top young hitters in the game. Who, from what I have heard is very capable of playing CF (Arizona had him playing RF because they had Chris Young before him). So, Upton could either replace Granderson in center or Gardner could move back to center (which I really like).
For Ariziona- They get a very good outfielder who is still pretty young and will only make about 5.5 mil this season. Granderson could either play center for them or he is more than capable (with his bat) of moving to a corner spot. Arizona would also get two very good prospects. I think Romaine is a very solid prospect who translates well to the Majors. I think he has a low bust rate. Good, young offensive catchers are very hard to find and Arizona woud get a good one in Romaine. And if you think about it, we have no place for Romaine to play down the road. I would like to move Montero to DH and have Romaine be the starting catcher (a few years from now), but that is not possible. We need to keep the DH position open because Jeter may need it down the road as will A-Rod. So, with Montero's bat at catcher, Romaine would be stuck with spot starts. Also heading to Arizona would be Dellin Betances. Betances is a great prospect who has Ace potential, but, lets face it, pitchers his size have a high bust rate and he is far away from making an impact in the majors.
Best of all, with this deal is we get to keep Gardner. I think he is more impactful player in addition to being younger than Granderson. Plus, he is much cheaper, better in the field, and more disruptive on the bases.
What do guys think of this deal?
