Bomber Links: Making Moves
Mood Music - Enter Sandman by Metallica
Now that we seem to have some closure on the Derek Jeter situation as well as a drama free resigning of Mariano Rivera, the next order of business is a new contract for Andy Pettitte. I would have to imagine that the return of Jeter and Rivera (along with an eight figure check) could convince Andy to join the cast of The Core Four's Last Hurrah. Hopefully Pettitte and Jorge Posada can ride off into the sunset together after grabbing one final championship.
And now, some moves from around the league:
-The big one. The Red Sox will acquire Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres for Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, and Reymond Fuentes. Excellent coverage from our sister site Over The Monster can be found here, here, and here.
This is a great pickup for the Red Sox, and one that they have long been rumored to be on the brink of making. My hope is that Brian Cashman and co. are not in the business of anatomy measuring. The Red Sox adding a piece does not necessitate deviation from the goals the organization has established.
- Lance Berkman is going to sign a one year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.
I liked Berkman a lot when he was here and wish him the best. I must admit my skepticism about the Cardinals plan to use him in left field, however.
- Bronson Arroyo has agreed to a two year extension with the Cincinnati Reds.
- Aaron Harang has agreed to a one year deal with the San Diego Padres.
- Francisco Rodriguez will avoid jail time. The judge ruled that no other punishments were necessary after realizing that K-Rod is signed by the Mets through 2012.
I'm sure there's much more to come and we're always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I would have to think that with Jeter and Rivera out of the way, Cashman is only beginning to widen his gaze.

Apparently, Cash & Co are going to the Winter Meetings with a big sack of money
They’ll give it to whoever takes it. I have a feeling they will be returning home with Lee and Crawford.

They don't need Carl Crawford
The only way I want to see the Yankees go after him is if they try and trade for Zack Greinke and adding one of the outfielders is needed to make the trade happen. If the Yankees have to substitute Gardner in for Montero and it would make it so the Yankees could deal for Greinke without giving up Jesus, I’m all for that. Then if that happened I’d open up the checkbook to Carl Crawford to fill the void in LF.
However, if they sign Cliff Lee or manage to deal for Greinke or somebody else without giving up Montero or an outfielder, then leave Crawford alone. The outfield is fine the way it is, and the only way I would mess with it is if it brings Zack Greinke to NY.

Berkman in LF won't work probably.
Did Gonzalez really improve the Red Sox? I mean will he have a better season than Beltre did last year? Think of it that way.
Ready for a splash soon for us.
"Individual players don't win championships, teams do."
I don't think A-Gon is an upgrade over last year's Beltre
but he is much more consistent. Obviously Saltek is a huge downgrade from V-Mart, so right now I think those positions are a net loss for Boston. The real thing that will make a difference is how all their injured players perform. However, nobody seems to notice that most of their replacements had pretty good years (were way above replacement level.)
Will Boston be better next year? Yes, but so will the Yankees. We had injuries of our own (Pettitte, Johnson, Posada, A-Rod and plenty of role players like Thames.) Also, 2/5 of our starting rotation was absolute garbage to the point where there is nowhere to go but up.

Also, they only got a few hours left to sign him to a long contract or no deal
He wants 8/160 and right now his shoulder is in a sling still after surgery.

most of the reports now...
Say that the Red Sox will make the deal even if they don’t get the extension done as long as they feel like they’ve made enough progress to keep negotiating. I think they’ll make the deal regardless…I’m sure they don’t want another A-Rod situation where they dangle the fruit in front of their fans’ noses and then snatch it away.

I agree with that
Last year’s beltre was ridiculous. But he will never play like that again.
Gonzalez will provide more home runs probably. The injured players do make a difference.
The catching is not as bad as you think. Last season LF was no offense, and catcher was. This year catcher will be like that, and with a signing of Werth likely, the offense will come out of there.
The injured guys help. The Red Sox were still second in the AL in runs last season. So if they stay healthy, they can easily repeat that IMO.

All I know is that Beltre had a higher WAR last season than A-Gon ever had
and it wasn’t even Beltre’s best season. Will Werth improve the team over the turnstile of LFers? Probably, but the same thing was thought of Cameron to a lesser degree and his best contribution last year was injuring himself since he was terrible when playing.
Also, if you sign Werth, what happens with Ellsbury?
by Monotonousblob on Dec 5, 2010 10:08 AM EST up reply actions
Ells still plays CF
Werth in LF. And Beltre, fine, he’s had two good contract years. And AGonz is hitting at PetCo, and now moves to Fenway. I think he will be better.
Cameron, we all thought defense. But he is not close to the player Werth is.

I thought Ellsbury was moved to LF for Cameronsince he struggled so badly in 2009
You would still have 4 good starting OFers, hand historically, Ellsbury is the weakest link.
by Monotonousblob on Dec 5, 2010 10:17 AM EST up reply actions
They moved Ellsbury back to CF
when he came back the first time, and have said he will be back in CF next season.
I have slight issue with his fielding, but not really a concern of mine.

WAR SMAR I'd take A-Gon over Beltre everyday
and it’s not like they’re losing a whole lot of offense putting douchebag#2 over at third base, not to mention that Gonzalez is going to love hitting in Fenway a lot more than PETCO. The Sox got a good deal for him, hopefully the trade works out for the Padres because they just traded away their most popular player since Tony Gwynn.
good analysis
Sox problems last year were::
bullpen
Beckett
bullpen
Lackey
bullpen
all the starters in April
bullpen
Sox fill-ins covered up the injuries offensively, but the defense suffered. Terribly at times
by Frank Malzone on Dec 5, 2010 10:07 AM EST up reply actions
I'll agree. But I do not think Lackey will be
that bad again. He’s a better pitcher than that. Beckett… Who Knows? I think they will fix the bullpen.

Lackey

Hope that helps.

Yes. Papelbon.
I’m hoping they get their head out of their you-know-what and make Bard the closer.

Right now I think the Yankees are just waiting out Pettitte
I doubt they are going to shift all their focus on calling him up, pushing him to make a decision. All they can do is set a date, ask him to decide by then, then offer some reasons why he needs to come back, but Pettitte already knows all the reasons anyways.
I honestly think the reason he’ll be back is not because of the money nor the HoF push, but because he was never really given a proper goodbye. There was really no fanfare during his final games, no massive thank you campaign for everything he’s done for the team. Is Pettitte a Hall of Famer? Probably not., and he did leave the team during the middle 00’s, but he’s been an important cog in 5 WS wins and to give him nothing less than a long standing ovation in drawn out Yankees fashion would be a disservice, same thing for Posada as well.
I want Andy back
not only because he’ll help the Yankees next year, but the Core Four deserves one last shot at a title. I guarantee you if he comes back that’ll be a huge story next year, because Andy will be gone and Posada likely will be on his way out as well. And Rivera probably after 2012 is done.
The Core Four is aging and almost gone. Next year may be the last year they will all be together. I want them to win one last title together before it dismantles.

We need Andy & Lee next season to effectively compete with the BoSox
Our pitching staff will again be great if we get Andy back & sign Lee. The problem is the BoSox is great as well.
With Boston getting Agon & either Crawford or Werth their offense is improved taking into consideration Youk and Pedroia will be back at full strength.
The AL east division will be back to the Yankee/BoSox rivalry again… I am looking forward to it

They need another starter
they don’t need Cliff Lee.
To me Greinke would be better because he’s younger, less injury prone, and cheaper. And he’s also one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Andy would be great to have back, but I would say they’d compete with the Red Sox whether he comes back or not. A top four of CC, Greinke/Lee, Burnett and Hughes is as good as it gets.
"I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."- Kobe Bryant
Need a proven QUALITY starter
not just “another starter”. We’ve been through that Vasquez. Lee is the guy. Greinke may do. But you still need Andy back because AJ is nothing but headed into his Vasquez year here. He’s the number 5 guy with
Sabathia
Lee (greinke – small “g” intended)
Pettite
Hughes
yup thats what I meant
Greinke is a proven quality starter. Thats why’d I’d go after him.
AJ will probably go into the season as the #3 or #4 man. If he loses it again thats one thing. But I think the Yankees will give him the opportunity to right himself next year, and rightly so.
"I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."- Kobe Bryant
Greinke is anti- media and given his medical history would probably not be very successful in NY.
Let Greinke go to Texas and we take Lee for 5 not 6 years.
Greinke has never faced a playoff race or playoff game. I would rather take a proven playoff veteran in Lee than take Greinke who might crack under the pressure. Pitching in NY requires more mental and physical toughness than anywhere else. I am not sure Greinke is up to it

I'd take a shot on him
the youth and the contract is what appeals to me most. His last two seasons, one was a Cy Young year, the other was a season comparable to CCs. Thats pretty darn impressive.
"I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."- Kobe Bryant
Cy Young year? Where? In Kansas City?
Greinke’s never pitched a meaningful game in his professional life. Cliff Lee has dominated on baseball’s biggest stage in baseball’s biggest city — and in a hostile environment since he was the enemy.
Just get him.
Everything else is just Einstein at a chalkboard….
CCLeeAndyHughes and then the whiffleballer. THAT’s the answer until AJ is 3-10 and we give either Joba or some hot kid at AAA a chance at the 5-slot.
In the grand scheme of things..the Sox got a steal.
The only prospect with star potential is Fuentes, and he’s a long way off.
by schmosterballs92 on Dec 5, 2010 11:16 AM EST reply actions
what?
Casey Kelly might be overrated by our pesky, scrappy, gritty/gutty rivals, but he is a top prospect and most definitely has the potential to be a 1 or 2 starter…which is nothing to sneeze at. Rizzo is a potential power hitting 1B and like you say Fuentes is a very solid prospect.
Maybe they could’ve done better and in the present time a trade of prospects for an established star is always a steal, but I wouldn’t act like they got him for nothing.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
RT @NCTPadres Hearing 2 sides are somewhat at an impasse right now… Trade potentially might not happen. #RedSox #Padres #MLB
Oh this could be so awesome
I love angtsy Sox fans
Surprised
the Sox got Gonzalez so cheap. The main piece in the trade for the Sox is Kelly, and he was a combination shortstop/pitcher a year ago. He seems like more of a novelty than future major league star. He didn’t do anything special in Portland last year. The Sox were talking about having to give up Bucholtz and some other players for Gonzlez at the start of last season, and he had pitched a no-hitter in the majors. Kelly has one sub .500 year in AA.
haha.

I thought everybody knew he became a fan after taking that part time job at sushi stand out in the left field food court.

Chris Samba pulled a goal back for Rovers near the end, from a cross by young substitute Josh Morris, but Blackburn will be glad this performance came after their recent takeover had already gone through. It was fowl.
