Pull out of Lee sweepstakes

What would happen if the Yankees publicly state that they are out of the running for Lee and are moving on?  Do you think anyone would take them seriously?  Would it bring down Lee's value?  Let the market establish the market price for Lee without the Yankees.  I'm sure Lee's agent with give the Yankees the last look.  Isn't that what an agent is suppose to do?  Get the best price for their client.  And if the Yankees' are interested, giving the Yankees the last shot is the thing the agent needs to do.  The trick is can the Yankees' disinterest be seriously taken?  Btw, I DO NOT WANT LEE ON THE YANKEES.

Considering Pettitte is likely to retire and CC likely to opt out at the end of next year

Do we really want to have to potentially fill three rotation spots? If we pass on Lee and CC opts out then we are royally effed.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

It was actually reported that Andy is leaning toward returning next season

As far as CC goes, you may be right, but the whole point of the opt out in place was in case he didn’t like NY. He loves it and lives there year round, so I don’t think that will be a problem unless he wants more money.

CC won't opt out..

He has no reason to…He’s getting paid and he won a title.

The only reason he wanted the opt-out clause was because he didn’t like the culture of the clubhouse as an outsider. Now that he’s there, he loves being there.

Let's cut through the crap, Vaughn. I only got one thing to say to you: "Strike this mother f*cker out."

If CC has a good enough year where he thinks opting out will get him more money from a new deal, he’ll do it. If he doesn’t think he can get more, he won’t.

CC will opt out ...

He’d be stupid not to—especially if he puts up typical CClike numbers. Unlike Casey Close and Jeter whose ability to do arithmetic is suspect, CC realized that by signing a contract that affords him the oppty to opt out after year 3 puts him in the perfect place (age wise) to break the bank.

I don't want him

And certainly not since it will mean tying up 125+ mil for 6-7 years for a pitcher who I think might give us 2 good years.

There's always next year

The Yankees need another starting pitcher

That is clear to me. However, they don’t need Cliff Lee and there’s no point in paying this sort of money for a pitcher they don’t need. They need a solid mid-rotation starter that they can count on to give them a chance to win the majority of the games he pitches.

Unfortunately, Lee may be the only option, because in FA there’s him, and then there’s a bunch of starters that are all worse than anybody currently on the Yankees staff. Unless they can find something in a trade, Lee may be the only option to fill that void. And if thats the case they need to get him.

Pitching wins in the postseason. The Giants showed that it doesn’t hurt to have two aces and two solid #2 types for your rotation. If we sign Lee, that gives us two legit aces, two 2/3 types in Pettitte and Hughes, and who the hell knows what in Burnett. I don’t think it’s quite as good as what the Giants have, but we have a much better offense, so we’ll be ok.

The biggest advantage the Yanks have right now is that no team can spend the amount of money they can. Backing out would bring other teams into the race, which is the last thing the Yanks want. They want Lee to feel it is inevitable he will sign with them, backing off would be a bad move unless they don’t want to sign him.
