Victor Martinez has signed a a 4 year/$50 mil contract with the Detroit Tigers. They're aggressive this offseason eh?

Boston’s catching depth chart consists of Saltalamacchia and the earthly remains of Jason Varitek

Bad signing
V-Mart’s a good hitter but not a great hitter and a terrible catcher. The problem here is that if you move him to 1st base or DH he becomes only a slightly above average hitter for that position and not worth $12.5 mil a year. He’s an exceptional hitter for a catcher but he’s a lousy catcher so you hurt your defense if you keep him there to maximize his value.
Boston is in catcher purgatory now though especially with John Buck off the market. I can see them trying to trade for someone like Kurt Suzuki, but barring that they’re looking at either V-Tek, Salty or a low level FA like Miguel Olivo as their opening day catcher.

interesting
Boston picked up Ortiz’ $12.5M option but wouldn’t pay V-Mart $12.5M/year. Obviously 1 year is better than 4, but VMart can play two positions (not well, but he does play them) while Ortiz doesn’t play ANY position and is 3 years older.
Bill James predicts a 139 wRC+ for Ortiz and 132 for VMart. They’re too optimistic, but is the guy who can catch and play 1B for 4 years with a slightly lower wRC+ better than the full-time DH that’s 3 years older?
when you consider Boston’s catching situation…
Boston maybe in love with what Ortiz did in the past?
He’s not that good anymore and is a one dimensional player. V-Mart can play two positions (not that well, but he can do it), has a great bat and is younger than Ortiz. That doesn’t make sense to me.

Theo's a genius
he must have a plan
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
He managed a 137 wRC+ this year taking about 2 months off….

Ortiz’ main issue is health. His bat hasn’t slowed down any.
