What CC's surgery tells us about Joe Girardi

As CC heads to knee surgery it is time to think about Joe Girardi.

I complained about how passive Joe was with his pitchers.  His explainations didn't really make baseball sense.  We let the division title slip away and then didn't use CC on short rest.

We started Hughes in games 2 and 6 leaving Pettitte for 3 and 7.  The worry about the game 7 matchup didn't wash.  You need to get into a game 7 before you worry about the matchup.  You don't save the better starter for game seven if you can win in 6.

Now it is revealed that the Yanks essentially had no staff.  Hughes had innings limit.  Pettitte was hurt.  CC was hurt. Javy and AJ didn't have anything.  No wonder we were passive.

Girardi is better than we give him credit for.

I retract all "Fire Girardi" rants.

Compared to Torre

Girardi is a saint. I’ve never had a problem with Girardi’s managing of the Yankees after having endured Torre’s decisions over all those years.

CC has proven to be a workhorse

That’s a big reason the Yankees were even in the playoffs this year. I wouldn’t say his injury is due to poor managing. It’s funny how this comes out now that CC is having the surgery. If Girardi started mixing and matching pitchers against hitters… we’d be reaming him out for that as well.

i’m still confused… Why were andy and Phil switched for games 2 and 3? Did he think Andy vs Lee would be a better matchup? cuz thats just plain stupid

Andy was hurt

they actually used that as explanation as to why they held him badk

beyond the fact that Andy was apparently hurt and needed an extra day of rest, Hughes’ home/road splits were drastic. He got clobbered at home because of all the home runs he gave up there, but was much better on the road. Many analysts praised Girardi’s decision for this fact alone; when you take into consideration Andy’s injuries then it turns out it was the only move he had to make anyway.
