Proposed; Retool the Yanks for 2011

The Yanks didn’t make it in 2010.  Good team, good attempt, time to retool.  Resign Jeter and Mo.  Then it's not time to stand pat.

Top priority is starting pitching.  Sabathia has clay feet.  Hughes is still developing.  AJ disappointed, but will be back.  Andy is a FA, only a maybe.  Vazquez doesn’t get another shot.

Recommendation:  Sign Lee.  If the trade for Zack we read about is available, pull the trigger.  Resign Andy if we can,  you cannot have too much pitching.

Next priority is get younger and more athletic with a stronger bench.   I do not see how we get better at left, center, first or second.  So, the only target is right.  Sign Carl Crawford, Swish to the bench.  Then I heard an interesting proposal, sign or call up a dynamic defensive shortstop.  Does anyone think  Nunez can do it?  Jeter moves to third, Arod to primary DH.  A great increase in bench strength is created.  Acquire, or bring up a defensive catcher.  It is time for Cervelli to go.

Keep doing what we’re doing in the pen.

Others who are not the answer.

Thames, Berkman, Joba as starter,  Nova as starter, Ramiro Pena.

I don’t like some of Girardi’s decisions, but he’s not the problem.  I can live with him.

Can’t resign ANY more DHs other than Thames.

Posada, Jeter, & Rodrigguez need to occupy the DH position.

I would sign Juan Uribe if Nunes isn’t ready to play more significant time
@ SS & 3B

Jeter should bat 9th & play maybe 125 gms @ SS.

Elvis Andrus started less gms @ SS than Jeter & had over 100 more assists.

Goodbye to Berkman, Johnson, & Kearnes, & Golson.

Cabrera could be signed as a 4th outfielder. Excellent fielder, good bunter,
very good arm. .250 hitter. He has 2 play @ 200 lbs, though. He’s put on
some weightlast year.

Swisher is league average in right field. Hardly “no d” and definitely does not belong on the bench.

Swisher just had a breakout year – he isn’t going to the bench. Arod and Jeter are adequate on the left side – atleast for awhile. They will need DH time next year though

I really don’t see KC moving Greinke this off-season while he’s still under contract through 2012. Maybe next July.

There is no way Swish rides the pine next year.

Jeter isn’t moving and Nunez cannot do it. A-Rod is still a very capable thirdbaseman.

by Scooby Snacks on Oct 27, 2010 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Retooling should involve all of minor leaguers called up, trades, and free agency.

It’s hard to imagine sending a switch hitter producing 29 homeruns and 80+ rbi (2 years in a row) to the bench.

Signing Crawford and Lee and acquiring (and probably extending) Greinke will blow the salary structure into a new universe, especially if Pettitte stays.

Alex Rodriguez as a DH is the most foolish thing I've read yet today

Rodriguez is more than capable of playing his position at 3rd base. Jorge Posada, if anyone, should be moved toward the DH spot. His defense has never been stunning and continues to rapidly decline into a pit of despair.

A-Rod is a more than capable 3B

He’s not moving yet. He’ll be at 3B next year and probably for 2-3 more years after that too.

My bet is that Jeter moves before A-Rod does.

and one more thing

Benching Swisher is an incredibly dumb idea. The guy made the All-Star team this year, and you want to stick him on the bench. He’s a more than capable hitter in the Yankees lineup, and you can pencil him in for 25 HR, 80 RBI and a good amount of walks next season. Don’t know why you’d want Swisher benched. That doesn’t make any sense to me.

Barring a trade (which I don’t think will happen, as I think Gardy will be traded before Swish will), Swisher will and should be in the lineup on opening day next year.

3rd id the only reasonable move for him.

A-Rod plays a better 3B than Jeter does at SS. But we all know that is not happening next year.

by Scooby Snacks on Oct 27, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

A-Rod is a better 3B than Jeter is at SS

and is a better 3B than Jeter will ever be if he switched there.

Jeter has always shown a good ability to catch popups and make over the shoulder catches, which are good outfield skills.

My guess is that he moves to the outfield once he’s done at SS. A corner OF spot. Maybe once Swisher’s contract is up after the 2012 season he can move over to right.

That would be mitigated by having above average bats at 1B, 2B, 3B, and C (assuming Montero arrives).

by Scooby Snacks on Oct 27, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

who cares what position he's playing?

his bat is in the lineup either way. His position has nothing to do with his bat. The position he’s at doesn’t change the way he hits.

And it doesn’t matter, because A-Rod, Teixeira and Cano are all among the best in the league at their positions. And hopefully Jesus comes up.

Jeets can't play 3b which is one of the reasons.

He doesn’t have the arm strength. He does the jump throw because it helps him get rid of the ball faster than setting his feet and making a strong throw from the hole.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

This is true. Jeter will probably sign for three years. In a couple years, he gets moved to the outfield and Arod becomes a primary DH, much like Manny and Thome

how do we get younger with a 29 year old LF , when swisher is 30 years old

we save 1 year. plus if jeter carries his SS defense to third we’d be better off with Arod who is league avg there.

Aren’t we all forever 29? Crawford is not the answer, and certainly not at the expense of Swisher’s bat/OBP.

by david d on Oct 27, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

this

I’m fine with us going after Crawford to drive up the price for any other suitors, but our outfield is fine the way it is. GGBG’s speed, patience, and OBP at amazing to set the table for the top of the line up. Grandy has speed, power, and good defense, and I would love to see what his numbers will look like after an entire season of his new swing. Swish has good power and defense, and he’s a great player for fans.

I wouldn't mind

A-Rod as the full-time DH. I mentioned it earlier this season and think it’s a good idea. I’d like to see Montero on the roster on opening day and starting at catcher. I would sign Posada to a one year deal and limit his duties as catcher.
I think A-Rod will remain at third this season tho, with Posada getting plenty of time at DH.

I'm assuming

it’s because of A-Rod’s hip issues, it’s why I brought it up during this past season. At least, that’s why I think it’s a good idea for 2012. Sooner IF necessary. I also would put Jeter in Left, if anywhere other than SS, and also after NEXT season.

Stuff to start in NY??

What exactly are you expecting in a #5 starter? He’s got three plus pitches and tossed a career high of 187 inning in AAA/MLB combined. The knock on Nova is that he isn’t aggressive enough with the inside portion of the plate and with finishing off hitters. Those are both correctable.

True enough

But developing a starter is painful. CC, AJ, Lee, Hughes, Pettitte or Zack G. Nova for long relief, spot starter at most. Putting him in the rotation is too risky. I’d rather start Joba. And I do not recommend that.

he can't go past 5 innings with out having

that one “bad” inning, where he gives up 4-6. Otherwise, he might have started in the postseason. i only see him in there if we do nothing with pitching this off season. And this is the Yankees so that is probably not happening :/

is there a trio that is better than Gardner, Granderson, and Swisher?
anybody?

Phillies aren't too bad

I think it’s Ibanez, Victorino and Werth? Thats as good as it gets offensively.

if the guys on the Mets actually played like the back of their baseball cards, I’d take Jason Bay and Beltran over Gardner and Granderson. Problem is, the Mets guys are always hurt and can’t seem to play to their capabilities when they are healthy, so I won’t count them.

Phillies have a solid outfield though.

Outfield solid, infield not

Yankees infield is as good as it gets, but there outfield could certainly be better. Texas has Cruz, Hamilton, and when Vlad is fielding, him too. That is simply outstanding.

by i says on Oct 27, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

True

The Yankees infield has A-Rod (best 3B in the game), Cano (best 2B in the game), Teixeira (one of the best 1B in the game, though I’ll put Pujols ahead of him), and Derek Jeter. Can’t get much better than that.

The OF for the Yankees is solid too. I wouldn’t change anything for next year offensively except for the bench, and the starting catcher.

If the Yankees want a dominant outfield to compliment the dominant infield, make Granderson hit for the WHOLE season. Make Gardner a lead off hitter and look into moving Swisher or DHing him while getting Werth. That makes us our outfield better.

Yankee fans give up on what they have and go get new things. We are kind of like little kids with toys. We shouldn’t be though, we should be fixing our already very good toys.

by i says on Oct 27, 2010 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

wow! i've never heard of that

moving derek jeter to third and making arod a full time has a lot of effects on te future of our team, first, nunez or pena gets a chance at SS which is a good thing,2nd we wond see montero probably until next year when posada says goodbye to the yankees bcz this move wouldput posada as still our liability at C. 3rd, we probably get the most of arod’s at bats because thats the only thing he needs to focus on. now what can u say about it???

by Cano Fan on Oct 28, 2010 1:26 AM EDT reply actions

Your a moron

There is a reason Jeter will never play 3rd…he doesnt have the arm strength. There is a reason they call it a power corner/hot corner. You have to make plays with incrediable arm strength and ARod still has better arm strength. As far as signing players and moving Swish I believe that is also a wrong move. He plays very good RF. The main problem is we have too many players who swing for the fence. Granderson is very capable of being our everyday CF. We need a Crawford to hit 2nd. Jeter needs to move to the sixth-8th spot. He is liable to the Double to much these past seasons. He will be resign mainly because he has had a 300 average every year except this one. 2 yr deal max I hope. I like Thames. It is hard to find a guy who can come off the bench and not complain about playing time. Your wrong about our pitchers too. Nova did a great job considering he moved from AA to the majors. Give him a chance. I would love to see them deal Joba, because he is prime to sell before he does anything else. AND…please resign Wood and MO. There is a chance that Brackman breaks the lineup, at least the bullpen. We need another LH relief pitcher. And that is a fact. OH…sign Lee for Christ’s sake!

by ryan72nf on Oct 28, 2010 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

Hate to tell y'all

Jeter will sign and play SS. ARod will play 3B. For a few more years each. They are not moving.

IMO Posada and Montero should platoon at catcher/DH. Swisher should not be benched or be a primary DH. So unless you trade him or Gardner, Crawford makes no sense.

Cash may surprise us all but the major areas where the Yankees can improve are pitching and bench. I am not excited by Lee. Too old for that kind of money.

Thames should follow Berkman out the door. So a fourth OF who can play defense. A backup infielder and a third catcher who can throw somebody out. Those are the areas of focus. It is just a tune up

If Petite retires then starting pitching becomes a concern. If he comes back as expected:

CC
Petite
Hughes
AJ
Joba or newcomer or Nova or ???

Jeter ...

would retire or leave before moving positions. There is positively ZERO chance this would happen. As for benching Swisher, a .290 hitter with power who consistently ranks among the leaders in walks and OBP, you are on crack.

I fear signing Crawford would lead to major disappointment. I don’t think he would be a good fit. And I believe he’s about reached his ceiling and may even decline… Let Long continue to work with Granderson, and we’ll have a guy who will hit .280 with 35hr and 100+ rbi with 20+ sbs next season.

I assure you I am not on crack. But I also do not want to see outfielding done by Marcus Thames or Derek Jeter, even on a part time basis.

I will confess to an old timer, I might have been more provacative in what I wrote than in what I really think we should do. But that 1/2 the fun, isn’t it.

Nova was impressive, but he missed his targets by a long way many many times. That will catch up with him. I am convinced we will not see him as more than a fill in starter in the Bronx in the next couple of years.

Outfield

You can’t bench Swish…and Grandy is solid both in field and at plate…the weakest link is Gardner…has the speed to play LF…but lacks both arm and bat. He can’t even bunt for base hits…can’t hit a homer in Yankee Stadium…somethings wrong. I think they move him first and get Crawford for LF.
Swish had career numbers and in many cases you’d think that’s the time to trade a player. They screwed up by not resigning Matsui…so one never knows. If we can get Zack from the Royals I’d trade Gardner.
Hell I’d even let AJ get traded he’s only gotten worse. Will a new pitching coach be better for him? or not having Posada back there? Who knows…but 15 losses was 25% of the teams losses…that BLOWS.
