Pujols...?

A rumor on the ESPN website is saying that the Yanks may be trying to acquire Albert Pujols from the Cards via trade. Supposedly, they would like him to be the DH. It also says that they are also monitoring Joe Mauer, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez.

Unless Mark Teixeira has a career ending injury, I don't think there is any chance in hell we get Pujols. Even if Tex does sustain a career ending injury, I don't think there is much of a chance the Cards would trade him for anybody (including Jesus Montero). But I was thinking, Pujols started his career as a left fielder, how interesting...

To be honest, I'm not sure if this is just a monitoring the situation job or if they're actually serious about this. Here is the rumor, because you need an ESPN Insider account  to read it on the website:

"Could you imagine the lineup in New York if Albert Pujols ended up in pinstripes? Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune wrote Sunday that the New York Yankees are keeping their DH spot open for the possibility of acquiring Pujols, via trade or through free agency.

Rogers also writes that the defending champs will monitor the situations of Joe Mauer, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez, as will the Boston Red Sox, and that both clubs are staying out of the Matt Holliday race this winter in order to retain the flexibility necessary to be a player for one of the four.

If it came down to free agency, it's a free-for-all where the rich get richer, but in a trade situation, the Yankees and Red Sox wouldn't be alone. The problem for the other 28 teams in the league, however, would be getting the player they are acquiring to agree to a contract extension before the farm is sold to bring him aboard.

Pujols in the Bronx, hitting behind Derek Jeter and ahead of Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira -- that's scary, as is the payroll tallies should the Yankees be able to pull it off.

As for King Albert's deal, right now he's got $16 million coming next year, with a $16 million (no-brainer) team option for 2011. But if there's no extension done by next fall, expect things to get really interesting."

Holy crap...are they serious?

How in the hell will we trade for Pujols? I mean seeing him in pinstripes would be awesome but what do they want? 10 1st rounders? lol

That price is too high.
Montero, Joba, Hughes, Cano. No problem.
But not Cervelli!

Yes, the Yankees are getting Pujols

The Yankees will send Jamie Hoffmann and Sergio Mitre to St. Louis for Albert Pujols. Pujols will arrive at Yankee Stadium on the back of a unicorn. The Yankees will then build a time machine and re-acquire Babe Ruth to play LF.

This wasn't from an ESPN article per se

It was from some bored dickhead writer in Chicago wildly speculating (AKA pulling stuff out of his ass) that the Yankees are leaving their DH position open for a big bat come 2011.

This is pure, unadulterated crap.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Yeah, because some Chicago Trib writer knows exactly what the Yanks are going to do over the next couple years… the article is complete conjecture.

It's true!!!!

Espn reports the yankees have signed Peter rabbit aka the Easter bunny to a 5 year 200 mil contract. Buster bunny reports now the red sox will have to make a move for Kris Kringle …just pay 49.99$ a month to learn more?

Pain heals, chicks dig scars, glory lasts forever!!!!!!

by NJHEAT on Jan 5, 2010 9:48 AM EST via mobile reply actions

This would never happen

But if it did, here’s why/how:

1. St. Louis can’t afford to sign Pujols for the necessary $25-30 million.
2. St. Louis trades Pujols for Teixeira straight up, and the Yankees sign him to a monster extension (he’s under a reasonable contract the next 1-2 years, which helps NY’s payroll in the short-term and St. Louis’ in the long-term).

Here’s why it won’t:

1. Pujols comes with a greater injury risk.
2. Pujols already has a ring with the Cards and plenty of chances to make the playoffs.
3. Pujols could retire as the greatest Cardinal ever to play the game (not bad for the 2nd most storied franchise in baseball).

Cano + Jesus

+ Cervelli for Pujols?

Can Fat Albert play 2nd?

…the Cards DID sign Holliday to a gargantuan contract….

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 5, 2010 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Except Pujols doesn't have like 7 years and a billion dollars left on his contract

and the Cardinals aren’t a cellar dwelling team.

Next Year Trade Pujols ?

c’mon people, the Yanks wouldn’t pay 200 mil for a guy to only swing a bat for 7 years, although they came close with Giambi !
The only guy of the 4 the Yanks should sink money into is Mauer, but getting him from the lowly Twins will be a chore…hometown boy and all !

by yanksRunity on Jan 7, 2010 6:26 PM EST reply actions

In the AL where yankee fans belong

After 2010 we’ll need a catcher, hell we need one now !
Although Pujols can hit like a madman, he doesn’t fit in the defensive scheme. You going to stick him in the outfield so he can underperform out there like Swish and Damon ???
