Johnny Damon appreciation thread
I saw it mentioned that some of you wanted a Johnny Damon appreciation thread. So, here it is.
I know I will miss the guy. What will John Sterling call balls hit into 'Damon's Deck' at Yankee Stadium now?
Use this thread to say whatever you want to about Damon, who needs a new job now.

I was wondering about this...
In my experience, this gesture means eating out a certain “delicacy” if you catch my drift. Were Swish and Damon really doing the “eat bajingo” gesture on live TV, or does this mean something else, lol.
Typically, it’s done by holding up only the index and middle finger. But as you know, they come in all different shapes and sizes and they could be expressing their preferred variety.

I'm pretty sure they meant it like a rock n roll type thing
like Kiss or something like that.
But it definitely came off as tonguing snatch, which is why I loved it so much.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Apparently money is more important than winning.
80 million clearly isn’t enough to raise and feed a family nowadays. For shame.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
He's a way better player than
Xavier Nady and his contract is 3 million dollars over our price range. No way was Damon coming back.
Crowds are won and lost and won again, but our hearts beat for the diehards.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES JOHNNY
Thanks Johnny, you always played great for us.
I will miss you not being in the Yankee line-up but things change in life.
Best wishes for success on whatever team you end up with… hopefully in the National League.

Goodbye Damon
We all wanted you back, you’ve made more money than most generations of people wil dream of, but you’ve decided that money is more important, adios.
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
Thanks
Johnny, thanks for four great years
We will miss your energy
….only if scot boras wasnt your agent….
.
sign Johnny
It ain’t over till the fat lady sings. Until the ink is dry on a contract somewhere Damon might be back. Lousy outfielder but plays a lot of games, can hit real well and in the clutch. Plusa great team mate. I am not giving up hope of seeing him in a Yankee uniform this year. I might sound crazy but you never know. I don’t know why they wouldn’t spend the few mill it would have taken to get him at a bargain. Maybe Cashman has something up his sleeve. Either way we can repeat. NY loves JD, Scott Bore arse sucks.
The only way Damon comes back
is if he calls up Hal Steinbrenner, gets on his knees, and BEGS him to take him back, and offers to play practically for free.
He’s not coming back. Maybe, if he signs with the A’s, once the A’s are out of it and they are looking to deal him at the deadline, they can make a deal for him if LF isn’t going to well. But this offseason, now I will be shocked if he returns.
And I.....

Thanks for 4 great years, Johnny
You were filling big shoes replacing Bernie. You did great. Thanks for making your years in pinstripes memorable, espicially 2009. Too bad we’lll see 28 without you in the dogpile. Couldn’t have had 27 without you.

I will surely miss Damon’s double steal in a single play in the the World Series against the Phillies. Pedro Felix will miss Damon too.
i wish i could go back to when Damon signed
and all the talk about how by ‘09 he would be worthless. if there is one good thing to say about Damon, it’s that he produced well through his entire contract. good luck.

Farewell Johnny
I hope the results of your mistake will keep others from doing the same in the future.

If you had told me six years ago
That I would be commenting in a Johnny Damon appreciation thread on a Yankee site, I would have thought he’d signed a long term high money deal with the Red Sox then promptly been injured.
I was never crazy about Damon, and if he wasn’t playing through an injury he was telling us how he was playing through an injury. But his blend of speed and power was a great dynamic to have in the lineup for the last 4 years.

There is something to be said about hitting when it matters most
And I do not care what anyone says that can’t be taught.A certain few have it and the rest do not.

Why do you think many of us wanted him back?
Not even so much for the fact that he’s a solid ballplayer, but because he is an excellent situational hitter.
I really don’t like this decision to move on.
by FloridaownsFSU on Jan 27, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions
counter argument
A-Rod. Never was a great situational hitter until 2009. Until he cleared all the crap out of his head and his life.
Granted, he may be one of the greatest overall baseball players ever, but still. He had to figure it out, and it took him more than 10 years.
"never was a great situational hitter until 2009"
Well, I’m pretty sure that in 2007 he was a pretty good situational hitter. No, thats an understatement. The Yankees do not make the playoffs without the season Alex Rodriguez had in 2007. Didn’t he have like ten 9th inning home runs? He won around 10 games single-handedly. That was a pretty good situational year for him. So it’s not like 2009 was the only year he hit in the clutch.
Best of luck
Hope whoever’s smokin’ the wacky weed down in Tampa keeps their toke going long enough to sign your $7MM contract.
Thanks for the memories
Good luck Johnny
thank you for a terrific four seasons. I wish he would have come back, but it would have been an insult to him to have to come back at 2 million. Nady got 3.3 million without even playing last year. Hairston got 3 million. Damon is a far better player than either of those guys, and it’s understandable that he didn’t want to take that big a paycut, especially from his previous employer.
I will NEVER forget that double steal. Granted, I almost shit my pants when I saw him running while watching on TV, but that was a huge play in that game which pretty much won game four. That was very important because if the Yanks lose Game 4, they may not win the World Series. I think that when people think of Johnny Damon 30-50 years from now, that is the play that will come to mind. Players don’t get too many chances to have a moment like that. That was a huge play.
Good luck Johnny Damon. Thank you for being a big part of the 27th Championship for the New York Yankees. I’m pretty sure that when you come back to Yankee Stadium as a visiting player, you will get a far bigger ovation than you get at Fenway Park. I hope the Yankees don’t come to regret letting him go.
I too fear that this will be a regretted non-signing
mostly because if the Yankees had ponied up a couple more million, Damon was probably theirs.
I can respect Hal for wanting to have a budget. However, it seems quite a bit irrational to me for the Yankees, whoever made the final decision, to not give Cash a touch of leeway, and make one final push for Damon.
All I know is that when I heard the news on BBTN about Winn…my heart kinda sank. Not only because Damon was gone, but he was being replaced by a crappy hitter. This is an instance where it would’ve been better to simply save the “budget space” for later in the season. Winn will be gone by June 1st.

stop
with the doom and gloom mentality.
Damon and Boras had so many opportunities to stay with the Yankees. It’s not Hal and Cashman’s fault if they didn’t want to bit on pretty decent offers for an outfielder his age.
The Yankees will be fine. The signing of Winn really doesn’t change a whole lot from what we were expecting with just having Gardner in LF. Even with Gardner and no Winn, we are still contenders with a high chance to repeat.
Has nothing to do with doom and gloom mentality
I’m giving my honest opinions regarding this matter.
And of course Damon is to blame partially as well. If he wanted to be a Yankee so badly, he should’ve negotiated himself after it became apparent they weren’t getting some 2 year/26 mil deal.
by FloridaownsFSU on Jan 28, 2010 8:57 PM EST up reply actions
and look at it this way
Grandy replaces Damon, Gardner/Winn replace Melky, and Johnson replaces Godzilla. Need to keep Johnson off the DL. AND, if things are not clicking by the trade deadline, an upgrade will be made. Cashman doesn’t want to look bad after winning #27.
Would like to have seen Damon come back to be the last piece in the 2010 puzzle, though. He will be missed by the fans and players. Time marches on.
Crawford to the Yankees By the Trade Deadline???
If the Rays are out of the division race by the All-star break, they will definitely be sellers of Crawford for young proven talent rather than risk FA.
I expect the Yankees to be big players for Crawford. Gardner & two good minor league prospects could go for Crawford.
All that said, we all will miss JD and thank him for his contribution the last 4 years

sorry Johnny
It’s tough to see you go, especially with the great years you’ve given us, especially 2009.
Hopefully, you’ve learned your lesson: no one is irreplaceable. No one is equal either, but I hope you and Scott learned that when doing battle with the Empire, you don’t make threats and you don’t bluff, because they’ll call you every time.
I tried to muster up some sympathy for you but I can’t. You let Scott lead and perform this charade and circus act. You turned down not one but two decent offers from the Yankees to return and play once more to win a WS ring.
So, best of luck to you. There’s sure to be some fans here who will throw you a pity party even if you sign with another team.
Take a good loooonnng look
at this picture.
because we will N-E-V-E-R see Nick Johnson, Javy Vasquez and some guy named Winn on a float like this. I wonder what happened to our front office. BOSS — where are you?!!!!
If you are suggesting that those were all bad deals
I have to disagree. Nick Johnson was there with his high OBP and Cashman had to take that deal to replace Matsui. It was an affordable deal that left salary room for Johnny at the time.
Javy is a no brainer. He’s going to be one of the best 3-4 starters in the league if he continues to put up those numbers.
Winn is not the best hitter out there but he’s a year removed from back to back .300 seasons. That’s a pretty good deal for $2M.
You seem very certain that a WS team that gained in pitching and OF depth will absolutely not repeat.
I think that the Yankees still have a World Series-calibre team myself
obviously, but I will say that I don’t really think they’ve “upgraded” from last year, all things considered.
We’ll see how this works out.

see you later meng.
you can thank your great agent for having Randy Winn replace your ass.
where have you gone Joe dimaggio our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you?
good luck to johnny
wherever he ends up. A four year contract he signed with the yankees and played his ass off every game ahd got another ring in the process. to bad he wont be here for # 28
I can't believe it but...
I am already turned off to the 2010 Yankees. I can’t believe the moves they’ve made after the great start with Granderson. Matsui Damon Melky gone (champions). Nick Johnson, Javy Vasquez back — and a guy named Winn (NOT champions).
WTF? If i wanted a post-championship Florida Marlins routine I’d move to Miami. 90 games my fellow fans. THIS team will be lucky if it wins 90.
What a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE off-season.
WTF Kind of an outfield is that??????????
He was so-so with the glove, but was super clutch with the stick, a great presence in the clubhouse, and an all around valuable guy on the roster. Grandison, Swisher, Gardner/Winn ? WTF Kind of an outfield is that??

when your infield is

cuz Damon, MELKY!!!, Swisher was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.

Damons gone but not forgotten
Obviously this is a business but with Johnny and Matsui gone we gave a lot up..I hope when these two guys play us they kick our ass. George would never have allowed this to happen because all he wanted to do was win at any cost. You sign Johnson who should be on the disabled list by spring training and not Damon just shows you what they think of winning.
Damon is mercenary
To me he is a hired gun that is willing to go to the highest bidder. I am not saying that he didnt do i great job, but I dont like to see players not respecting the team, the game, the fans. Thanks Damon off to the Rays!
Granderson replaced Damon ?
I don’t think anyone can replace Johnny Damon, or Melky or the Hitman. We waited so long to get that 27th WS. Why did they have to break up this team? Cashman could have gone after another starter earlier, and worked it out with Damon. The Yankees could have bypassed Boras with a simple call to Johnny and a get together. I think Wolf, or Jason Marquis would have been available, and I think either one of them would have worked out. Now as it is, we still have to rely on a pitcher that will be walking on egg shells. Whats the old saying? if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I hope we haven’t broke it now.
So Damon, Matsui, and Hideki were the core of this championship?
not A-Rod, Tex, Jeter, Posada, Sabathia, Burnett, Rivera, or Pettitte?
The contributions of two aging no-defense outfielders and a slap hitter could never be replaced by:
An All Star Center fielder with a great salary and still in his 20s
An All Star (while with the Yankees), who posted a sub-3 ERA last year and will be a 3rd or 4th starter in our stacked rotation
A consistent (if sometimes injured) .400 OBP guy who fits better in the 2-hole than Damon.
An outfield defender that makes up for any defensive loss we took from Melky.
Yeah, we’ll be lucky to finish .500 without Hideki’s bum knees, Johnny’s girl’s arm, and Melky waiving at breaking balls in the dirt.
I loved those guys while they were Yankees, but they aren’t any more, and for good reason. It’s time to move on.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Ha that was supposed to be Damon, Matsui and Melky
My proofreading goes down when I try and put out fires.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
No body said or indicated they did it alone
As a matter of fact if you would have thought about what I was trying to convey in the post instead of trying to shoot off your pie hole it was exactly the opposite. Team chemistry.
I hope this team can have as much fun as last years team. I hope they jell like last years team.
By the Way Lord Duggan
This was suppose to be about Damon, and I never said that other players didn’t contribute. Im saying I think we are going to miss him on the field and in the clubhouse. I also think that we’ll miss Matsui’s bat, and Melky’s arm, despite waving at pitches in the dirt, he played pretty good D. I wanted to express my thoughts toward those players. I never said we cant win with out them. I think we can and will. But some of us have favorites, and if you disagree with the post ok, but dont give me your Bull Crap. Your little inuendos don’t impress me. You aint Clint Eastwood, Punk!!!
Oh no?

And by all accounts
Curtis Granderson is absolutely terrific in the clubhouse. Nick Johnson and Vazquez have both already been good Yankees. I see no reason why they won’t gel.

"Nick Johnson and Vazquez have both already been good Yankees"
“Good Yankees” Maybe you out to refresh your memory. Anyways When I said walking on egg shells it was a reference to Vazquez. What happens if he comes out his first outing and gets shelled (It happened to CC) then he has another bad game after that? Does he do a Carl Pavano and claim all kinds of injuries? Or worst he morphs into Ed Whitson. The ideal scenario is for Javey to pitch lights out the first time out and I pray it happens, but there are a lot of “IF’s” surrounding him and Johnson. Im sure Granderson will be fine, but I think we could have gotten Granderson without giving up Melky. It didn’t happen the show will go on, lets hope it’s a hit.
+1 I should have worded that differently
I know Melky wasn’t traded for Granderson, but he was traded because we made that deal. I liked Melky, I loved his defence, good arm, and young and he’s got some great years ahead of him , I wish they could be have in pinstripes.
