The Damon Market Shrinks More

The A's signed Ben Sheets, which means they won't have the money for a Damon reunion.

The Cubs signed Xavier Nady, which means takes Damon of the Cubs' radar and Nady of the Yanks'.

The Braves have plenty of outfielders.  The Red Sox and Mets seem ready for the season to start.  The Giants seem at the end of their payroll.

I think he'll wind up with the Yankees, or wind up sitting around in Spring Training waiting for someone on some team to get seriously injured.

damon

would defintiely take a one year/8 million dollar deal at this point. i think the yankees are looking to get him at about 6 per year. i do agree though that damon will end up with the yankees

Thanks for this update

People have posted all sorts of wonderful Damon- in- action photos which I can use as my wallpaper if he is re-signed.

The A’s are probably better off with Sheets than Damon- their pitching staff could stand a veteran arm or two after last year’s rookie invasion.

How much did Nady get from the Cubbies? Whatever it was, Damon may be hard- pressed to get any more than that.

And yes, Scott Boras was ahead of the curve in driving salaries upwards for the last 15 or 20 years, but now he’s behind the curve of deflating salaries for aging outfielders on the back nine of their careers. He still thinks they should all get $50 million over 4 years when the market is saying one year at $5 million. Damon will have a tough time even getting that. A month ago he could have 2 years at $14 million.

Disagree that Damon gets less or equal than Nady

Damon had great numbers last year- inflated by Yankee Stadium or not. Nady is coming back from his second TJ surgery. The two don’t equate for me.

FYI --

From Boras’ man-servant:

Nady got $3.3 million plus $2 million in incentives based on games played.

I gotta think Damon gets more than that in base.

by NumberSeven on Jan 26, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Damon @ $5-6 mil

base

plus generous performance incentives

That is what it will take to sign Damon and Cash will not spend that amount of money for marginal overall ( offense and defense and intangibles) improvement on his current LF’er.

Don’t disagree with me on marginal improvement. That is what the stats say. I agree that there are lies, damn lies and statistics but I also agree that Damon brings only a slight improvement on Gardner, all things considered ( inc. team chemistry).

Because I'm not a stat guy

If we were HOF voters I’d be one of those annoying “I know a good player when I see one” types, but can a stat guy show how much better our offense would be with or without Damon?

Yes

Damon has played 141, 143 and 143 games the last 3 seasons. In those seasons, Damon’s offense has been worth 4.8, 22.9 and 24.5 (weighted) Runs Above Average.

In left field, he’s been worth 7.5 runs above average (32 games), 6.7 runs above average (87 games), and -9.2 runs above average (132 games) according to UZR.

In total, the last 3 seasons he’s been worth 12.3, 29.6, and 15.3 runs above average.

The real question is, is his 2009 defense a fluke of UZR (notoriously flukey, though the best thing we’ve got), a wear down from playing more games in left than in the last 2 seasons combined, or a permanent diminishment of skills.

Damon has to come back now...

Everything is in cashman’s corner…and now he knows…He can wait til damon crawls back and…get a deal worth 6 mil for a year with performance incentives….

Damons bat is only so valuable because of yankee stadium and teams realize that…put damon in any other park most he is smacking is about 18 homers….not to mention his arm would be worth even less then it is now because the outfield in other parks are generally bigger then yankee stadium…

I don’t care if boras’s job is to get the most money for his players, he dropped the ball on this one…

Can you say…epic fail?

Who else is the possible landing spot for Damon?

Nobody. Without the possibility of a competing offer, the Yankees can make Damon a take- it- or- leave- it number. If Nady’s contract is worth a possible $5.5, then that’s the market for diminished by time outfielders. (It’s also Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui neighborhood dollars). The only reason to offer Damon any more money would be to allow him to save face and avoid bitterness. I don’t think Damon would be offered or would settle for an incentivised contract. He’s not coming off an injury or a bad season. There is every reason to expect that he will play 155 games, hit .280 with 20+ homeruns, steal some bases, hit second, stay out of double plays, and do all of the other things he’s always done.

Damon

Damon and Matsui were very valuable to the Yankees last year. Matsui is already gone. Whether he can throw or not, Damon is still a plus for the Yankees. The Yankees still need pitching help. AJ is not dependable every game he throws, and Andy, I’m afraid, will disappoint many this year. Hopefully he will prove me wrong. AND….how long can Mo continue? Age is creeping up on both Andy and Mo. Good things always come to an end……..hope it’s not this year.

Mo

I’ll believe that he’s declining when I see it. Until then, he’s the best closer in baseball. And I see no decline in sight for him.

Andy had a very good season

both have adapted well with aging. Andy will be fine. And I think Burnett will figure it out.

To nyyrocks and jramey

Hope you guys are right!! Will keep my fingers crossed!! Forgot to mention that Melkey is gone also. Losing 3 players…..Matsui, Cabrera and maybe Damon….would take a lot of punch out of the lineup. Don’t think Granderson, with all of his strike-outs, is the answer. Sorry to say, even though I have been a Yankee fan since my dad took me to Yankee Stadium in 1941, the vibes for this year are not what I want them to be. Hope I am wrong!

I don't appreciate the post of Mo...declining

That’s what people thought several years ago…and look!

If this past playoffs weren’t proof for u…then u need help. Mo sports a UNDER .75 era in the postseason and can still save 40+ games a season..
Hell he can even do TWO innings as he’s done…finished..hardly.

Pettitte proved u wrong this past year and is MONEY!…MONEY in the post season. Here again..u disappoint.
Andy’s no thrower!..He’s a “pitcher” that KNOWS..WHAT to throw…WHEN he needs it…and LOCATES the ball where he wants it…
That’s all u need to know.
No question about starting pitching…NEXT year…CASHMAN stocks up the rotation with Lee & Mauer(hope rings eternal)..by saving on $$$$ this year and uses it next year.

McDaniel/cashman bashman

It’s not about faith, karma, unity, etc……It is called reality. God in the dugout and Jesus in the minors??? I believe the guy in the dugout is Girardi, not God. Who is Jesus in the minors? I respect your religion, but God and Jesus are not Yankees. Hey, sciotrader..your hopes are way off….talking NEXT year…….let’s see where we get this year first. My words will prove you wrong. That’s all u need to know.

by ndirish on Jan 26, 2010 11:41 PM EST reply actions

Um

Jesus in the minors is Jesus Montero. And God in the dugout…I don’t even want to say it because it should already be ingrained in the fabric of the human discourse…Fransisco Cervelli, Almighty.
