Just a few New York Yankee notes
Not much going on out there in Yankee-land today, but I did find a few notes worthy of passing along.
- Chien-Ming Wang is stlll a free agent, and is apparently willing to wait until after the regular season begins to find a new team. For Wang, who still has to prove he will be healthy, that might not be a bad strategy at all.
- River Avenue Blues examines A.J. Burnett's 2009 season and wonders if he will be better in 2010.
- What is Hank Steinbrenner up to these days? Well ... WasWatching knows.
- At LoHud, Chad Jennings says Paul Molitor's career might be a better benchmark for Derek Jeter than Pete Rose. I have to agree that it is too early to realistically think about Jeter challenging the all-time hit record.
- Jane Heller just won't give up on her personal crusade to convince Johnny Damon to re-sign with the Yankees. Poor Jane. If Damon does not return to the Yankees I just don't know how she will manage to get out of bed in the morning.
- Bronx Banter shows a move clip that gives a good look at the original Yankee Stadium.

I just wish the season would start
Burnett: The only pitching stat that correlates with wins is wins. Thirteen wasn’t a lot of wins. Andy Pettitte won fourteen, and I remember at least three games that he left with the lead, eligible for a win that he ended up not getting. Burnett was so on or off that his total reflects his performance very well. I would like to think he will be better, but I wouldn’t expect more than fifteen wins.
Yesterday’s post on whether Derek Jeter can get Pete Rose’s record said all you need to know on this topic, which boils down to how long he decides to play. I like the Molitor comparison though, since Jeter will almost certainly finish his career with 300 home runs.
Posada in the Hall of Fame? Compare his numbers to Yogi’s when he retires. I think they will be similar and Posada will have as many rings as anyone eligible for enshrinement since the Yankees of the 50s. This view of his career- as roughly being like Yogi’s (although not as good a defensive catcher or malaprop machine) could get him elected.
I hadn’t heard about Damon to Oakland, but Jane Heller is probably right. Those 330 foot fly balls that go out in the Bronx are just warning track outs in Oakland.
Some low- budget team will take a flyer on CM Wang, but it will be a small- salary- high- performance bonus contract.

Disagree about wins- they depend on offense, too. Joba had a stretch at the start of the season where he went 8 or 10 games without a loss, only because the offense bailed him out each time. I’m concerned about WHIP, K/9 and Ground ball/ Line drive percentages.
Agree about Jorge. Off the top of your head, name the best catchers in the league for the 90s- today. Jorge is in the top 5, probably #3 after Pudge (roids) and Piazza. When you compare Jorge to Hall of Fame catchers, even when you adjust for the era, he is among the elite.

Re: Yankee Stadium 1928
Thanks for finding that clip. For whatever reason, that’s the first time I really noticed the “walk” between the pitcher’s mound and home plate being at Yankee Stadium…

On the Twins site “Twinkie Town” a writer posted his offensive predictions for the 2010 season. It’s pretty interesting, you ought to check it out. I think it would be a great thing to do with the Yankees…
